One person stabbed to death and two injured as 'Egyptian teen armed with a number of weapons' launches street rampage in Ireland in 'potential terror attacks'

One person has been stabbed to death and two others have been injured in what is being described as a series of 'random attacks' in Ireland.

Gardai are said to have arrested a heavily-armed teenager born in North Africa and officers are investigating if three separate incidents are terror related.

The knife attack happened shortly before 9am in Dundalk and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local sources have identified the attacker as an 18-year-old Egyptian, the Irish Times reports. 

Three scenes were preserved for technical examination in Avenue Road, Inner Relief Road and Seatown, County Louth, police said.

The stabbing victim is a 24-year-old Japanese man, according to RTE, and the two injured in separate attacks are said to be Irish.

Their conditions are unknown at this stage and it is believed they were assaulted with an iron bar.

Police officers confronted and disarmed the attacker, who was said to be carrying a number of weapons.

Investigators are working to establish whether or not the knifeman knew his victims and whether the incident was planned.

Sniffer dogs were seen on the streets this morning and a forensic tent was erected on Avenue Road, straddling the pavement and the road.

Surrounding roads remained closed as police worked to establish the chain of events.

Forensic officers were seen entering and exiting the tent, and a body was reportedly seen being carried away from the scene.

Japanilainen mies kuoli ja kaksi muuta loukkaantui keskiviikkona Irlannissa tapahtuneessa puukotuksessa. Poliisin mukaan terrorismia ei ole suljettu pois.
Dundalkin poliisi on pidättänyt 18-vuotiaan Egyptin kansalaisen epäiltynä puukotuksista. Poliisin mukaan mies oli hakenut vastikään turvapaikkaa Irlannista.

Puukotuksessa kuollut mies oli 24-vuotias, useita vuosia Irlannissa asunut japanilainen. Hän menehtyi tapahtumapaikalle. Epäilty haavoitti kahta muuta henkilöä toisaalla Dundalkissa. Toista loukkaantunutta puukotettiin ja toista lyötiin teräksisellä aitatolpalla.

Poliisi sai hätäpuheluita kolmesta eri paikasta ja löysi nopeasti aitatolppaa kantaneen egyptiläisen.

Poliisi ei sulje pois terroriteon mahdollisuutta.

Poliisi oli keskustellut egyptiläisen kanssa vain paria päivää aiemmin ja tiedustellut häneltä tämän maassaolon syytä.

Uhri oli nimeltään Yosuke Sasaki ja hän työskenteli National Pen -firmassa hoitaen asiakaspalvelua Japanin suuntaan. Myös tällaiset ns. positiivista monikulttuuria edustavat henkilöt joutuvat kärsimään, kun noiden elintasopakolaisten ja sotarikollisten annetaan vaeltaa ympäri Eurooppaa.

Tributes have been paid to a 24-year-old Japanese national who was stabbed to death in Dundalk yesterday.

An 18-year-old Egyptian man was arrested by gardai following three early morning attacks which left 24-year-old Yosuke Sasaki dead and two Irish men injured.

The suspect remained under questioning after a rest period overnight.

Today, gardai confirmed that there was no established link to indicate that this tragedy is terrorist related.

However, enquires are continuing internationally as the investigation develops.

"An Garda Síochána is currently liaising closely with our security and law enforcement partners worldwide to share and assess any relevant intelligence and its potential impact on the current investigation.

"At this time, we can find no established link to indicate that this tragedy is terrorist related. However, enquires are continuing internationally as the investigation develops.

"The threat level in this jurisdiction from international terrorism remains unchanged (MODERATE), where an attack is possible but not likely. The level of threat remains under constant review by An Garda Síochána in consultation with the Defence Forces."

At the scene of the stabbing of Yosuke Sasaki (24) on Avenue Road some bouquets of flowers have been left by friends, along with a small can of tinned coffee from Japan.

"Life taken too early, under such tragic circumstances," said a message in one of the bouquets.

A spokesman for the Japanese Embassy said they had made contact with and were providing support to Mr Sasaki's family. He requested that the media respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time.

Garda investigations into Wednesday's attack in Dundalk, Co Louth are continuing following the death of a Japanese man and unprovoked attacks on two young Irish men.

Yosuke Sasaki (24), who is believed to come from the Japanese city of Ebina-shi, died on Wednesday morning after he was stabbed in the back on Avenue Road in Dundalk by an 18-year-old Egyptian national armed with two knives. Mr Sasaki worked in the call centre National Pen, manning the phones for service calls for the Japanese market.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the company said it was "with deep regret and profound sadness that we confirm the death of our colleague in yesterday's incident in Dundalk".

It said Mr Sasaki joined the company in August 2017 and during his relatively short time there was a valued member of staff who made a positive impact on the company.

Peter Kelly, chief executive officer, of the company said "this is a time of profound sadness for management and staff. National Pen prides itself on taking the utmost care of its work colleagues. We will do everything possible to assist the family at this tragic time".

The man stabbed on Coes Road is understood to be Cian Murphy, a sales assistant in a local tile store, National Tile Ltd.

Speaking to The Irish Times, a manager at the store confirmed Mr Murphy was one of the individuals injured in the attacks and described him as a "local lad".

He said he spoke briefly by telephone to Mr Murphy after the attack while he was in the hospital and described his condition as "okay". He said the student had told him "he'll be fine".

The second man hospitalised after the attack at Seatown, Dundalk, was 23-year-old Dylan Grehan from Faughart a few miles from the town who sought assistance in a local pharmacy after he was hit on the head with what appeared to be a large stick or iron bar.

'Totally random'

From just outside Dundalk, it is understood he had just got off a bus when he was attacked. He went for assistance at Smyth's Life Pharmacy nearby. It's owner Anne McEntegart said, "The wound was pumping, there was a lot of blood."

She and her staff looked after the man and they rang the gardaí as well as an ambulance.

"It was totally random. He came in here afterwards asking for help," explained Ms McEntegart.

"He appeared to go into shock. We wrapped him in blankets and we took turns putting pressure on his head."

"We're very interested to know why was he in Dundalk, why would he come here, what's the reason, what's the connection," the senior garda added.

Detectives believe that the 18-year-old arrested man entered Dundalk through Northern Ireland.

He was stopped and interacted with local officers on January 1 but did not have any identification on him. As a result, he presented at an asylum seekers centre in Dublin city centre.

However, the Egyptian man returned to Dundalk on Tuesday and stayed at a derelict property in the town that night ahead of yesterday morning's attacks.

A number of Garda national units were also briefed after concerns were raised that the violent rampage matched profiles of Islamic extremists. The Garda Special Detective Unit (SDU) was briefed on the incident in the immediate aftermath, with the unit's counter-terrorism section now in contact with colleagues in Egypt and the UK.

A TEENAGER was charged last night with the murder of tragic Yosuke Sasaki.

Mohamed Morei, 18, was brought before a special court sitting under an armed Garda escort.

Japanese national Sasaki, 24, was stabbed to death on Avenue Road in Dundalk, Co Louth, on Wednesday.

An angry crowd ­confronted Morei as he appeared before a judge at the local district court. While in the courtroom for the brief hearing, the agitated accused made a number of outbursts, shouting out "I'm no gay", "F*** you" and "I'm no ­Muslim".

Garda Damien Welby gave evidence that he arrested the accused at 4.32pm today at the Crescent, where Dundalk Garda Station is located. Morei made no reply when cautioned.

Garda Inspector Martin Beggy then told the court: "There is an issue with his nationality. That is undetermined at present."

He later added there was nothing "in common between the deceased and the accused".

The court also heard of ­concerns about Morei's psychological wellbeing.

Asked by the judge whether the accused requires medical attention, Inspector Beggy said: "He has presented certain matters to us and we would have concerns."

Defence solicitor Barry Callan requested that his client receive "appropriate medical treatment while in custody".

Judge Gerry Jones directed that all appropriate psychological and medical treatment be provided to the accused. He also granted a defence request for legal aid and for an Arabic interpreter for future court dates.

Morei was brought into the court in handcuffs before they were released for the short hearing. Gardai armed with sub-machine guns surrounded the court complex as a furious crowd gathered outside.

The heavy Garda presence included members of the Armed Support Unit.

The crowds taunted Morei as he arrived, with gardai restraining a number of onlookers.

Morei has been remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court via videolink next Thursday. Two other men were also attacked in Dundalk on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, Mr Sasaki's ­colleagues at the National Pen Limited call centre told of their pain at his shock death.

In a statement tonight, National Pen said Yosuke joined the company last August and was "a valued member" of staff who made a "positive impact".

Irlantia ei mielletä "rikastuneeksi" maaksi koska se on ylirikkaan Britannian naapurivaltio mutta todellisuudessa Irlantikin on hyvin ns kansainvälistynyt. Puolalaiset ja liettulaiset ovat suurimmat maahanmuuttajakansallisuudet ja varsinaisista ylivoimaisesti suurin ryhmä ovat nigerialaiset.

Jossain määrin mielenkiintoisena yksityiskohtana kuvassa sattui silmiin hammasraudat. Kuinka yleistä hampaiden oikominen on Egyptissä? Hammasrautoja pitää myös säätää säännöllisesti hammaslääkärissä, mikä istuu ainakin käytännössä huonosti kovin vaeltelevaiseen elämäntapaan pidemmän päälle.

En hirveästi hämmästyisi, jos tässä tapauksessa tekijä paljastuisi oikeasti jonkinlaiseksi mielenterveystapaukseksi tai mieleltään muuten vain järkkyneeksi. Hyökkäystapakin kuulostaa harvinaisen onnettomalta terroristeillekin:

Japanilaisen kuoliaaksi puukottanutta ja kahta muuta miestä pahoinpidellyttä egyptiläistä Mohamed Moreita ei todettu syylliseksi murhaan tai pahoinpitelyihin mielenterveyssyiden vuoksi. Morei määrättiin pakkohoitoon mielisairaalaan, jossa hän on ollut tammikuusta 2018 lähtien.

Asylum seeker not guilty of murder by reason of insanity

An asylum seeker who claimed to be fighting for Isis when he fatally stabbed a man to death on a street in Co Louth has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

Ms Justice Carmel Stewart remanded Egyptian native Mohamed Morei to the Central Mental Hospital where he has been since he was charged with the murder of Yosuke Sasaki (24), from Japan, in January 2018.

Mr Morei (21), of no fixed abode, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the murder at Long Avenue, Dundalk on January 3rd, 2018. He was also found not guilty by reason of insanity of assaulting two men causing them harm, of criminal damage to a car and of robbery by trespassing and committing criminal damage between January 2nd and 3rd, 2018.

The jury returned its verdicts following 24 minutes of deliberation with the foreman saying: "The jury would like to express our sympathies with the family of Mr Sasaki".

Following the verdict, Mr Sasaki's older sister Shiori Sasaki said in a written statement that she could not understand "why a mentally unstable foreign national, whose origin was unknown, was allowed to be in the town".

She said Mr Morei had his rights protected but her brother was deprived of his. "It is truly infuriating and will forever be unforgivable," she said.

Paranoid schizophrenia

During the trial consultant psychiatrists Dr Brenda Wright and Dr Paul O'Connell told the jury that Mr Morei was suffering from acute symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the stabbing.

He told psychiatrists he was hearing voices in his head and believed he had been poisoned by the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Dr O'Connell agreed with Dr Wright's conclusion that Mr Morei did not know that what he was doing was wrong and he was unable to refrain from doing it.

Det Insp Martin Beggy told the jury that when arrested following the stabbings Mr Morei shouted: "I'm from Syria", banged a table and repeatedly shouted "Isis" and "Daesh", another word used to describe the Islamic State.

The accused said, "yes" when asked if he represented Isis but later said he did not represent anybody. He then said that he killed Mr Sasaki "for God".
