Police officer stabbed in neck at Michigan airport by suspect who yelled 'Allahu Akbar' in possible act of terrorism

A police officer was stabbed in the neck on Wednesday at a Michigan airport by a Canadian-born suspect who yelled "Allahu Akbar" in a possible act of terrorism, according to NBC News.

Authorities say the officer, identified by local news outlets as Lt. Jeff Neville, is in stable condition.

A witness told the Flint Journal he was dropping off his daughter at Bishop International Airport when he saw the injured officer.

"The cop was on his hands and knees bleeding from his neck," Ken Brown told the newspaper. "I said they need to get him a towel."

Brown said he saw a man detained by police and a knife on the ground at the Flint airport. Sources told NBC News that the attack could be terror-related.

The suspect is from Quebec and has a Canadian passport, law enforcement officials told NBC News.

Witnesses describe seeing a man led away in handcuffs by police. The terminal was evacuated at approximately 9:40 a.m., according to the Journal.

"All passengers are safe and are being evacuated at this time," the airport said in a statement on Facebook. "Please check with your airline for potential cancellations or delays."

At least 20 police vehicles from several agencies responded to the incident, according to the newspaper. The FBI is leading the investigation into the stabbing.

A witness at the scene said the suspect had a husky build and a "blank" look on his face.

Cherie Carpenter tells WJRT she saw the attacker's face. She was awaiting a flight to Texas to see her new grandchild.

Flint officials have stationed police officers around City Hall out of caution following the attack a few miles away.

Lt. Neville is a former member of the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, according to his Linkedin page.

Mayor Karen Weaver said "the situation is under control" but officials sought to take "extra precautions." The municipal building remains open.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all of our law enforcement officers who work to service and protect us each and every day," the mayor said in a statement, according to Click on Detroit.

Kanadan pääministeri on "kohottanut maansa profiilia" sillä että maa ottaa vastaan turvapaikanhakijoita samalla kun moni muu maa ei ota. No kohta ei enää pääse Kanadankaan passilla ihan tuosta vain minnekään, ainaskaan Yhdysvaltoihin. Onko sitten enää kivaa, luultavasti ei.

Ainoa hyvä puoli tässä on, että suurin osa noista teroista on koheltavia tunareita, jotka eivät onnistu suunnittelemaan ja toteuttamaan oikeasti isoja iskuja. FBI tutkii tätä puukotusta terroritekona. Tekijä on 49-vuotias Amor Ftouhi, joka huusi hyökkäyksen aikana allahu akbarin lisäksi jotain Syyriassa, Irakissa ja Afganistanissa tapetuista ihmisistä.

Ftouhilla taisi olla paratiisin ilot mielessään ramadanin aikana, sillä hän kysyi kiinniottaneelta poliisilta miksei tämä tappanut häntä. Suicide by cop meni ilmeisesti siis mönkään.

The stabbing of a police officer at a Michigan airport Wednesday by a Canadian citizen who yelled "Allahu Akbar" and referenced people being killed in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan is being investigated by the FBI as an act of terrorism, officials said.

FBI Special Agent in Charge David P. Gelios said at a news conference Amor Ftouhi, a 49-year-old Canadian citizen, entered Bishop International Airport in Flint around 9:45 a.m. and went to a restroom before dropping both of his bags, coming out with a knife and yelling "Allahu Akbar," the Arabic phrase for "God is great," before stabbing Officer Jeff Neville in the neck.

Ftouhi said something similar to "you have killed people in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and we are all going to die" as he was being arrested, according to Gelios. He also used a 12-inch knife with an 8-inch serrated blade, he added.

It was clear from the testimony of seven witnesses who took the stand against Amor Ftouhi Thursday Ftouhi had plans to die.

A special agent with the FBI said Ftouhi's death wish was fueled by his religion. The agent testified to his interview with Ftouhi right after he was arrested on June 21, 2017.

He said Ftouhi "wanted to kill and be killed" hoping it'd be easier for him to get into heaven.

Now to do that, we've learned he had plans to kill Bishop Airport's Lt. Jeff Neville by stabbing him, then he was going to steal his gun.

The special agent said Ftouhi told him he planned to use that gun to kill other U.S. government employees, because he blamed the U.S. for supporting Israel and other conflicts in the world.

Now, the defense made it clear Ftouhi didn't want to kill innocent civilians; but, the agent testified Ftouhi said he'd be forgiven by Allah if innocent people were killed.

A Tunisian man with dual Canadian citizenship has been sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a Michigan airport cop in the neck in a terrorist attack.

Amor Ftouhi, 53, was sentenced in a federal court in Flint, Michigan on Thursday after being convicted last year on terrorism and other charges.

Witnesses saw Ftouhi attack Lt. Jeff Neville at Flint's Bishop International Airport in June 2017 and wrestle him to the ground.

Prosecutors said he told investigators his 'mission was to kill and be killed.'

His defense lawyer, Joan Morgan, said Ftouhi wasn't attempting to create mass casualties and wanted to be killed so his family could collect life insurance and so he could become a martyr.

Investigators said Ftouhi wanted to stab Neville, take his gun and start shooting people in the airport.

Before sentencing, Ftouhi told the judge he had no regrets and only wished he could have acquired a machine gun that day to kill Neville and others.

Ftouhi said he wants to commit another act of terrorism, only do it "better" by successfully killing people.

Puolustus pyysi yhteensä 25 vuoden vankeutta, syyttäjä 20 vuotta vankeutta syytekohdasta 1 (commiting act of violence at an international airport), elinkautisia syytekohdista 2 (interference with airport security using a dangerous weapon in committing the assault) ja 3 (committing an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries), koventamisperusteina teon terroristinen luonne sekä uhrin viranomaisstatus.

AA-huutoa ei yritetä selittää miksikään "paniikkireaktioksi" tai jihadia "henkiseksi kilvoitteluksi", vaan syyttäjä kuvaa huutoa näin: "Allahu Akbar," the mujahedeen's battle cry."

Tuomari tuomitsi Ftouhin kahteen peräkkäiseen elinkautiseen. Ftouhi passitetaan liittovaltion ainoaan supermax-vankilaan, Coloradon ADX Florenceen.

The man convicted of a terrorist attack at Flint's Bishop International Airport in 2017 is expressing no remorse.

Shackled, wearing a baggy orange prison jumpsuit, Amor Ftouhi defiantly told the judge Thursday he regretted not killing the airport police officer he slashed with a knife in June of 2017.

He added that he also regretted not having a machine gun during the attack.

As his case has progressed slowly through the U.S. legal system, Ftouhi appeared frustrated as his attorneys discouraged him from speaking out in court.

Thursday, Ftouhi finally had his moment.

In a controlled, though at times emotional voice, Ftouhi criticized the U.S., Israel, Russia, democracy, and corrupt elements in Middle Eastern countries.

Ftouhi talked about having "Jihad in his heart." Amor Ftouhi is a native of Tunisia, and had been living in Montreal at the time of the attack.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Leitman stopped Ftouhi briefly, warning him that his statements would affect his sentence. Later, the judge said Ftouhi had tied his hands, as he sentenced Ftouhi to 2 consecutive life terms.
