Essexissa Braintreen kaupungissa kaksi miestä yritti lauantain ja sunnuntain välisenä yönä murtautua moskeijaan ja sen jälkeen polttaa tämän heittämällä palavia roskia sen katolle. Palonalku saatiin kuitenkin sammutettua. Tämän ilmeisesti humalaisen kaksikon toiminta tallentui valvontakameroille. Poliisi kutsuu tekoa viharikokseksi ja pyytää silminnäkijöitä ilmoittautumaan.

Thugs target mosque in brutal arson attack after launching bricks at Islamic worship site

A GROUP of thugs has been caught on CCTV setting fire to a mosque in Essex after throwing bricks and kicking the door.

Two men were captured targeting the mosque in the early hours of Sunday morning in the horrifying attack.

Before setting fire to rubbish and throwing it onto the roof the thugs tried to break into the Al Falah Braintree Islamic Centre.

Senior figures at the mosque believe that the men were drunk and were luckily unable to set fire to the entire building.

In the footage the two hooded thugs can be seen pointing at the building before one of them throws a brick at the window.

Next, one of the men can be seen wandering round the side of the building before they tried to set the religious building alight.

Rubbish which had been set on fire can be seen landing on the roof after begin launched by the two thugs.

The corrugated roof set ablaze as melted plastic dripped down onto the building as the flames spread.

Police have described the attack as a "hate crime" and have called for witnesses to come forward after the attack.

Secretary of the centre Sikander Sleemy said: "I think they had a drink or were drunk, just by the way they were walking and the fact that the pubs closed just before.

"They passed by and stumbled across to the mosque, or realised it was a mosque, and have had a bit of fun and tried to set fire to the mosque.

"I think the first boy tried to break in but couldn't and they grabbed some rubbish and set it alight and threw it on the porch area on the roof and, because of the weight of the bag, it just burned and came straight through.

"It was burning when one of our taxi drivers was passing. He put the fire out with a bottle of water.

"Had the bin bag not been as heavy it could have spread across the roof and we could have been looking at something worse."

The same mosque was targeted just tree years ago after a smoke grenade was thrown into the mosque by armed-man Geoffrey Ryan, 44, hours after the murder of tragic soldier Lee Rigby.

He was jailed for nine months after admitting his crimes.

Braintree Chief Inspector Craig Carrington, from Essex police said: "This is a concerning but rare incident and the impact it has had on the community cannot be underestimated.

"We are investigating the offence and are working with our partners to reassure the community at this time."

James Cleverly conservative MP for Braintree fumed over the incident.

He said: "This mindless attack on the local mosque is completely unacceptable. The actions of a couple of thugs in no way reflects the welcoming nature of Braintree."
