QuoteUK Independence Party MEP Steven Woolfe has been taken to hospital in a "serious condition" in Strasbourg following an "altercation" at a party meeting on Thursday.

Mr Woolfe has been touted as a possible leader of the party following the shock resignation of Diane James after just 18 days earlier this week.

A statement from Ukip's interim leader Nigel Farage said:

I deeply regret that following an altercation that took place at a meeting of Ukip MEPs this morning that Steven Woolfe subsequently collapsed and was taken to hospital. His condition is serious.
Mr Woolfe, the party's migration spokesman, and had been bookmakers' favourite for the leadership role before Ms James won the contest earlier this summer. He was controversially disqualified from the contest after submitting his nomination 17 minutes past the deadline.

Ukip's Suzanne Evans tweeted: "Shocked to hear Steven Woolfe has apparently collapsed in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Wishing him well for a speedy recovery."
