New York Times on julkaissut positiivisen arvostelun Christopher Caldwellin uudesta kirjasta "Reflections on the Revolution in Europe: Immigration, Islam, and the West": http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/30/books/30garner.html?_r=1.

Poiminta arvostelun lopusta:

It is hard to argue with his ultimate observation about Europe today: "When an insecure, malleable, relativistic culture" (Europe's) "meets a culture that is anchored, confident, and strengthened by common doctrines" (Islam's), "it is generally the former that changes to suit the latter."

Mielenkiintoista on se, että arkkiliberaalinen NY Times julkaisee tällaisen arvostelun. Caldwellin kirjaa tuskin käännetään suomeksi, mutta jos käännettäisiin, voisi arvata "Suomen NY Timesin" eli Hesarin kunnioittavan sitä jonkun ammattimaisen islam-apologeetan murska-arvostelulla.

Caldwellin kirja - arvostelusta päätellen - sisältää monia huomioita, jotka ovat peräisin nettimaailmasta, mutta jotka hyveellisyyteensä tikahtuva lehdistö on joko tuominnut tai jättänyt huomiotta.

NYT:n Caldwellille osoittama huomio perustunee C:n taustaan Financial Timesissa pikemmin kuin hänen varsinaiseen sanomaansa. Kirjan myötämielinen arvostelija siirrettäneen pikapuoliin hampurilaisarvioijaksi ruokapalstalle.

Pravdassa kuitenkin seurattaneen huolekkaana tilannetta. Ehkä Anna Paljakka siirretään kohtapuoleen Hämeen-Anttiloiden tueksi kulttuuri -ja politiikkaosioon.

Niinpä. "Hesarin kaltainen mielipidelehti". Siksi on epätavallista, että NYT julkisee myötämielisen arvion Caldwellin kirjasta. En kylläkään halua ryhtyä inttelemään NYT:n oletetuista tai todellisista motiiveista.

Lehtimiesetiikkaa ei muuten ole olemassa. En ihmettele lainkaan, vaikka hesarikin muina miehinä julkaisisi islam-kriittisen artikkelin. Itse asiassa oireita siihen suuntaan on näkynyt. Se takaa lehdelle alibin. Jos yhteiskunnallinen kehitys suhteessa islamiin menee yhä huonompaan suuntaan, lehdellä on varastossa artikkeleita, joihin voidaan viitata "mehän sanoimme jo silloin"-tyyliin. Päälinjalla on sitten turvallisempaa jatkaa näiden juttujen muodostaessa eräänlaisen oikeassaolovakuutuksen.

Caldwell frames the issue of Muslim immigration to Europe as a question of whether you can have the same Europe with different people. The author, a columnist for the Financial Times and a senior editor at the Weekly Standard, answers this question unequivocally in the negative. He offers a brief demographic analysis of the potential impact of Muslim immigration—estimating that between 20% and 32% of the populations of most European countries will be foreign-born by the middle of the century—and traces the origins of this mass immigration to a postwar labor crisis. He considers the social, political and cultural implications of this sea change, from the banlieue riots and the ban on the veil in French public schools to terrorism across Europe and the question of Turkey's accession to the E.U. Caldwell sees immigration as a particular problem for Europe because he believes Muslim immigrants retain a Muslim identity, which he defines monolithically and unsympathetically, rather than assimilating to their new homelands.
