The interior ministry will create one or two more refugee reception centres catering for 1,000 persons to respond to the increased migration flow, Minister Constantinos Petrides said on Wednesday.

The minister, after a meeting with Akel leader Andros Kyprianou on the refugee issue, said that conditions at the Kofinou centre for asylum seekers have improved significantly. The reception centre, which is the only one for asylum seekers at present, hosts 330 though it can cater for 400, the minister said.

"Today not all asylum seekers can be hosted in reception centres since there are 15,000 while another 15,000 have been granted subsidiary protection status and efforts are underway to integrate them in the job market," Petrides said.

He added that plans are underway with EU assistance to create one or two more reception centres catering for a total of 1,000 people. The 'Pournara' temporary reception centre in Kokkinotrimithia is being expanded, he said, while part of it will be reserved only for vulnerable groups.

The minister reiterated however that Cyprus could not host 30 to 40 reception centres and end up another "depository of souls".

The minister said that more active involvement by the EU was necessary to ensure conditions of security and welfare in countries like Syria while arguing that the Dublin regulation needs to be amended since at the moment it is dumping responsibilities only on first-line countries.

Petrides also said a mechanism was necessary for an automatic distribution of beneficiaries of subsidiary protection across all EU countries while the EU ought to sign more readmission agreements with third countries that refuse to take in their own nationals.

Jos tuo ei paikallisilta Orpoilta ja Sipilöiltä onnistu niin vaatisivat Turkkia partioimaan merta Kyproksen ja turkin välillä ja pysäyttämään veneillä tulijat ja kieltämään turvapaikkaa hakevien maiden kansalaisilta matkustamisen Kyproksen turkkilaiselle puolelle lautoilla tai lentokoneilla niin ongelma olisi ratkaistu.

Tähän voisivat pyytää avuksi EU:ta mukaan painostamaan Turkkia.

Jos nämä hölmöt saisivat vaatimansa taakanjaon jossa Kyprokseen menemällä pääsisi Saksaan ja Suomeen jne. niin Kyprokseen tulisi 500 000 halukasta ja kun muualla Euroopassa alkaisi vastustus viimeistään kun 250 000 näistä olisi taakkajaettu niin Kyprokselle jäisi 250 000 afrikkalaista ja lähi-itäläistä.

Turkin toimintaa Kyproksen suhteen voisi kutsua paljon enemmän hybridi-sodankäynniksi kuin sitä että muutamia tuhansia notkujia päästettiin Venäjältä Norjaan (kunnes Norja alkoi pysäyttää rajalla) ja Suomeen (kunnes Sauli Niinistö, Orpo ja Sipilä anelivat Putinilta apua).

Frontexin Poseidon-operaatio on ottanut Samoksen saarella käyttöön ilmassa leijuvan ilmalaivan, jossa olevilla kameroilla ja sensoreilla pystytään valvomaan Kreikan merirajaa. Ilmalaiva voi vaijerin päässä nousta 1000 metrin korkeuteen ja palvelee ympäri vuorokauden.

Samos: Successful Airplane Testing for Border Surveillance

From tomorrow and for 28 days, a jet airplane (zepeline) is being run on a trial operation in Samos for the purpose of uninterrupted surveillance of the sea borders in real time and on a 24-hour basis.

Already this 35 meter radar, thermal camera, AIS (Automatic Identification System) and can grow to a height of up to 1,000 m from the base station has successfully completed its system tests.

At the same time, a mobile (on-board) sensor station with equivalent equipment from the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) is being developed on the island in order to real-time compare the operational capabilities and ability to calibrate the terrestrial and aerial technical solution.

This pilot activity is part of the European Poseidon Joint Undertaking, which has been running on a continuous basis since May 2008 under the coordination of the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard and ELAS headquarters under the supervision of the European Border Guards and Coastguard- Frontex, who also made the zeppelin.

A workshop organized by Frontex was held in Samos on Thursday to demonstrate the capabilities of this captive airship.

Through this exercise, the Coast Guard becomes the first coastguard of a Member State of the European Union that uses a deployed airship to police the maritime field and combat cross-border crime, just ten months after the first pan-European use for similar non-manned Air Force ) of medium-range long-range height (MALE) in September 2018.

This, according to the port, demonstrates the strong and clear will to make every effort, using the state-of-the-art technology, to effectively guard the EU's external maritime borders, to combat all forms of crime and to protect it human life at sea.

GNR detect 51 migrants in the Aegean Sea

The Coastal Control Unit (UCC), as part of the mission of the European Border and Coast Guards Agency (FRONTEX) detected 51 migrants northeast of Samos Island – Greece on 31 July.

During a coastal surveillance action, carried out by the UCC Mobile Observation Post (POM), which is equipped with high resolution and range radar, day and night surveillance and detection system, it was possible for the GNR to detect a suspicious vessel in the Aegaen Sea heading for land in the northwest part of the island and it turned out to be a small, overcrowded rubber boat.

Immediately, the team made contact with the Latvian vessel, which was in the immediate vicinity and at the service of FRONTEX, enabling the rescue of 51 people, including three children, 17 women and 31 men.

The migrants were sent to the port of Karlovasi, where they landed safely.

Two arrested for migrant smuggling after car chase

Police in northern Greece on Monday arrested two foreign nationals, aged 24 and 19, and charged them with people smuggling after a car chase.

The two suspects had 10 illegal migrants crammed in their car, police said.

The migrants had entered Greece via the country's border with Turkey in the Evros region.

The chase began after the driver of the car refused to pull over for a police check on the Egnatia Highway outside Thessaloniki.

Police said the migrants claim to have each paid the men 2,000 euros to transport them to Thessaloniki.

Cyprus asks Brussels to relocate 5,000 asylum seekers

Government accuses Turkey of refusing to cooperate to handle influx of migrants.

Cyprus has asked the European Commission to help relocate 5,000 asylum seekers to other EU countries as the island nation struggles to accommodate an influx of migrants.

In a letter sent on Monday to Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos and other EU members, Cyprus' Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides described the gravity of the migration situation on the island and said that a lack of cooperation from nearby Turkey has made finding a solution more difficult.

In the letter, seen by POLITICO, Petrides also urges "all Member States to submit their pledges for relocating 5,000 persons from Cyprus."

The small nation with a population of less than 1 million people has seen a dramatic rise in the number of asylum seekers and migrants arriving over the last two years, and now has the EU's highest number of first-time asylum applications per capita. Cyprus did not participate in a previous EU scheme to redistribute refugees arriving on the shores of Italy and Greece to other EU countries, but its request shows that the bloc's struggle to handle the migration crisis that peaked in 2015 is far from over.

The unusual political status of the divided island, where the north has been occupied by Turkey since 1974, has also made it harder for Cyprus to deal with the growing influx.

"Cyprus is in urgent need of immediate assistance, given the unprecedented high number of arrivals," Petrides wrote.

Within the first six months of this year, Petrides said there's been a 130 percent increase in arrivals to the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, despite the country's efforts to protect its EU border and curtail migration.

The greatest percentage of arrivals come to the Republic of Cyprus from Turkey or via the occupied area in the north — some 8,500 people between 2015-2019, according to the letter. This has made it "impossible to implement any measures targeted to reducing the migratory influx." Petrides wrote.

Refugees make dangerous sea crossing to Greece after clampdown in Turkey

The number of refugees trying to reach Greece from Turkey has increased dramatically over the past week, a monitoring organisation has said, saying the sharp rise in numbers is mostly due to a hostile environment for Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan, and other refugees in Turkey.

The Aegean Boat Report, which collects information about refugees arriving in Greece from Turkey, said on its Facebook page that the Turkish Coastguard had stopped 111 boats in the week between 29th July and 4th August.

Around 3,350 refugees were detained by the coastguard, the highest number of migrants picked up during a seven-day period since 2015, when the refugee crisis was at its height.

Another 44 boats, carrying 1,326 refugees, managed to evade the Turkish coastguard and land on Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.

Thousands of refugees are being held indefinitely in overcrowded camps on Greek islands while Athens decides whether to grant asylum to the migrants or return them to Turkey.

However, conditions in Turkey have made refugees increasingly desperate to reach Greece and other EU countries.

"The issue is complex but most of the rise in the number of refugees arriving in Greece is due to the political shift in Turkey. People are afraid of being sent back to Syria or Afghanistan," a spokesperson for Aegean Boat Report told The New Arab.

Turkey currently hosts over 3,500,000 Syrians as well as a smaller number of refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.

Koumoutsakos to Kathimerini: Worrying increase of migrant flows in the Aegean

The Greek government is deeply concerned over the reported 17 percent increase in migrant and refugee arrivals in recent weeks, says Alternate Minister for Citizens' Protection Giorgos Koumoutsakos, who is responsible for Greece's migration policy, in an interview with Kathimerini. More than 20,000 people are currently stranded on the Greek islands of Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Kos and Leros.

Koumoutsakos says that the new government inherited a "closed" system of constant inflows and very limited outflows. He speaks of a nascent migration corridor between Alexandroupoli and Samothraki in northeast Greece, and warns of the additional strain on an already tense situation caused by overcrowding on island as well as mainland facilities.

The conservative minister also stresses that recent threats from Turkish officials combined with tension in Ankara's ties with Brussels and Washington are a cause for serious concern. At the same time he recognizes that Turkey has shouldered a significant burden, and through that prism he notes that Athens wants to cooperate on the issue with its neighbor to the East.

You have just visited Mytilene. What is the situation regarding the flows from Turkey toward the islands?

The situation we inherited was particularly difficult right from the beginning: overcrowding in the existing five hotspots on the islands, a situation where 25 structures on the mainland have reached the limits of their capacities, inadequate infrastructure and insufficient personnel, especially lengthy procedures when it comes to the review of asylum applications, and as a consequence of all of the above, an increasing strain on local communities. In a nutshell, a combination of complex problems that no longer have easy solutions.

I traveled to Lesvos because the messages we received are worrying, and this despite the fact that, as Citizens' Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has stressed, the relevant authorities and their personnel are carrying out their duties under very difficult conditions, thus ensuring the proper functioning of the local economy and social calm on the island. Increased flows are being observed, which in turn generate even more pressure on an already asphyxiating situation at the Migrant Reception and Identification Center in Moria. There has been an intensification of migrant and refugee flows during 2019, and in particular over the past few months.

Today on the five Aegean islands, that is Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Kos and Leros, the total number of refugees and migrants has exceeded 20,000. This constitutes an increase of 17 percent in a few weeks. This increase has occurred while the pace of flows has increased substantially. Since July 7, there has not been a single day without arrivals. Indicatively, on Lesvos, we have had an increase of 44 percent compared to the same period last year. August 9 was one of the worst days during the summer period for Lesvos, as six boats with 250 people arrived.

It is not just the numbers. It is also the geographic dissemination. The networks of the migrant smugglers are seeking to spread the flows to more Aegean islands. Thus, the geographic scope of remedial actions is also expanding. Over the past few months, a new "corridor" has been created between Alexandroupoli and the island of Samothraki. An additional reason for further reflection is the geopolitical overheating in the broader region, which could lead to a new increase in the flows. All of the above confirm the fact that the situation is very complicated and multifaceted. The issue of migratory and refugee flows is a very difficult equation.

What will be your next steps on the internal front?

Our six priorities have already been announced. The basic ones are the protection of the borders, strict supervision of the reception and identification centers, the decongestion of the situation in the islands. We attach particular weight to the acceleration of the procedures regarding the review of asylum applications, so that they can be performed more efficiently, while, obviously, respecting international law. At this juncture, there are tens of thousands of applications pending. For instance, I would like to mention that just during the period covering the first half of this year, there have been 30,500 new applications.

During 2018, more applications were submitted on Lesvos and Samos than in Austria and Finland respectively. As a result, those that enter the country today will have their first programmed interview in roughly two years. This pace cannot continue. Therefore, there is a need for a series of interventions so to make this procedure more effective, in combination with the reinforcement of the staffing and the infrastructure. In parallel, the procedures for the evaluation of vulnerability will be examined closely.

Turkey: 1,500+ irregular migrants held over past week

At least 1,546 irregular migrants were held across Turkey over the past week, according to data compiled by Anadolu Agency from security sources.

As many as 457 migrants were caught in multiple operations carried out by gendarmerie forces in the northwestern Edirne province, which borders Greece and Bulgaria.

In the northwestern provinces of Kirklareli and Tekirdag, a total of 54 migrants were held by gendarmerie forces.

In the eastern provinces of Van and Kars a total of 44 migrants were held by police and gendarmerie forces over the past week.

In the coastal provinces of Canakkale, Balikesir, Aydin, Izmir, Mugla and Antalya, the Turkish Coast Guard and gendarmerie forces rounded up a total of 911 migrants as they were trying to cross to Europe through Greece.

Moreover, some 14 irregular migrants were also held by police and gendarmerie forces in the southern province of Adana.

Separately, border forces in the southern Hatay province caught 54 migrants for reportedly entering Turkey from Syria through illegal means.

A total of 12 migrants were held by police in the central Anatolian province of Kayseri.

The migrants included Pakistani, Congolese, Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Senegalese, Central African, Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian, Somali, Libyan, Togo, Cameroonian and Palestinian nationals.

Migrant arrivals pick up, camps burst at the seams

Migrant arrivals on Greece's northeastern Aegean islands have picked up as hundreds of asylum seekers are attempting to cross the sea from Turkey and reach the European Union on a daily basis.

Officials said 1,607 migrants and asylum seekers landed on the islands in the week between August 5 and 11, bringing the total number of people staying at island facilities to 21,550.

All migrant reception and identification centers are stretched far beyond their hosting capacity. The Moria hotspot, on the island of Lesvos, is currently holding more than 9,000, nearly three times its capacity.

The Chios camp has a capacity of around 1,000 people, but it is currently home to 2,440. Meanwhile, the center on Samos, built for 600 people, now houses 4,005. The hotspots on Kos and Leros are also overcrowded.

Greece says it is resuming deportations of migrants to Turkey in an effort to address an increase in arrivals over the summer months that have worsened overcrowding at camps on the islands.

Giorgos Koumoutsakos, a minister in charge of migration policy, said 15 asylum-seekers whose applications had been rejected were to be sent back to Turkey from a nearby Greek island Friday, but gave no further details.

He told private Skai television that 75,000 migrants in Greece were currently having their asylum applications reviewed, including 9,000 whose applications had been rejected but were appealing the decision.

Greek police say six migrants killed, 10 hurt in road crash

Greek police say six migrants have been killed and another 10 injured when a smuggling jeep carrying them through northern Greece crashed into an irrigation ditch.

Police say the accident occurred Monday outside the village of Loutra near the northeastern town of Alexandroupolis that is close to the Turkish border.

It was unclear what caused the jeep, carrying 16 men from Pakistan and Egypt and two suspected smugglers, to veer into the ditch beside the road.

Greek police raid Athens squats and arrest migrants

Greek police have arrested about 100 people in dawn raids on squats in Athens mostly occupied by refugees and migrants.

Dozens of officers cleared four sites in the Exarcheia neighbourhood of the capital. Helicopters flew overhead and the neighbourhood was flooded by police during the operation.

The conservative government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who took office as prime minister last month, had vowed to bring "order" to the district, promising regular police patrols.

The neighbourhood has frequently been the site of clashes between anarchists and the police, particularly since 2008, when a teenager was shot dead by an officer, causing days of rioting.

Kostas Bakoyannis, the new mayor of Athens, who was sworn in on Sunday, has pledged to make security his highest priority. Bakoyannis has accused the previous leftwing government of having taken a soft line against vandalism by some anarchist groups.

Ringed by university buildings, Exarcheia has long been a base for Greece's intellectual left, anti-authoritarian and anarchist movements. Riot police stand on constant guard on the perimeter, and there are regular skirmishes between police, who use teargas, and youths, whose most common weapon are molotov cocktails, eager to vent their frustration at Greece's economic and political situation.

In a country where far-right and state violence against migrants is well-documented, the lack of a visible police presence inside Exarcheia and its vocal anti-racist stance have created a place of relative sanctuary, say migrants.

Thirteen boats with 547 migrants arrived at the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos from the Turkish coast on Thursday afternoon, in what is the largest number of arrivals in one day since the migration crisis of 2015-2016, local media reported on Friday.

Of the total number of people who landed on the northern beach of Skala Sykamias, 177 were men, 124 were women and 246 were children. Most of them are families.

Of these, 193 were transferred to the Moria Reception and Identification Center and the rest remained at the UNHCR camp in Sykamia, with the prospect of being transferred to Moria for registration on Friday.

According to reports, two Coast Guard vessels are operating in the area as of Friday.

Ja missään ei lue, että ihmissalakuljettajat saivat yhtä monta perättäistä elinkautista kuin oli heidän uhriaan. Ei edes yhtä vuotta uhria kohti. Miksi minusta tuntuu, että salakuljettajat kestittiin palatseissa ja lähetettiin tarkasti vartioituina takaisin tuomaan uusi taakkalasti.

Migrant arrivals on Greece's northeastern Aegean islands have picked up as hundreds of asylum seekers are attempting to cross the sea from Turkey and reach the European Union on a daily basis.

Officials said 1,607 migrants and asylum seekers landed on the islands in the week between August 5 and 11, bringing the total number of people staying at island facilities to 21,550.

All migrant reception and identification centers are stretched far beyond their hosting capacity. The Moria hotspot, on the island of Lesvos, is currently holding more than 9,000, nearly three times its capacity.

The Chios camp has a capacity of around 1,000 people, but it is currently home to 2,440. Meanwhile, the center on Samos, built for 600 people, now houses 4,005. The hotspots on Kos and Leros are also overcrowded.

Greece to increase border patrols and deportations to curb migrant influx

Greece is to step up border patrols, move asylum-seekers from its islands to the mainland and speed up deportations in an effort to deal with a resurgence in migrant flows from neighboring Turkey.

The government's Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence convened on Saturday for an emergency session after the arrival on Thursday of more than a dozen migrant boats carrying around 600 people, the first simultaneous arrival of its kind in three years.

The increase in arrivals has piled additional pressure on Greece's overcrowded island camps, all of which are operating at least twice their capacity.

Arrivals - mostly of Afghan families - have picked up over the summer, and August saw the highest number of monthly landings in three years.

Greece's Moria camp on the island of Lesbos - a sprawling facility where conditions have been described by aid organizations as inhumane - is also holding the largest number of people since the deal was agreed.

On Saturday, the government said it would move asylum-seekers to mainland facilities, increase border surveillance together with the European Union's border patrol agency Frontex and NATO, and boost police patrols across Greece to identify rejected asylum seekers who have remained in the country.

It also plans to cut back a lengthy asylum process, which can take several months to conclude, by abolishing the second stage of appeals when an application is rejected, and deporting the applicant either to Turkey or to their country of origin.

Kreikan poliisi otti sunnuntaina kiinni Thessalonikissa Albanian kansalaisen, jolla oli pakettiautonsa kyydissä 26 matkustajaa. Heistä 23 oli Pakistanista ja 3 Bangladeshista.

Jokainen matkustaja maksoi matkastaan (johon kuului rajajoen ylitys Turkista ja autokyyti Thessalonikiin) 2000 euroa per henkilö.

Sen jälkeen poliisi teki ratsian salakuljettajien tukikohtana toimivaan varastorakennukseen, jossa pidettiin vankina 12 Pakistanin kansalaista, joilta salakuljettajat vaativat rahaa.

Yksi salakuljettaja, jolla oli Kreikan kansalaisuus, pidätettiin paikalta.

Police in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki say they have arrested the driver of a van carrying 26 migrants – 23 of them from Pakistan and three from Bangladesh.

Police say the driver was an Albanian who tried to escape on foot after officers stopped the van early Sunday but was caught.

Authorities say police then arrested a Greek man in charge of a warehouse where officers found 12 more Pakistanis being held while the traffickers asked for money.

Police say the 26 migrants in the van were being driven to the warehouse. Officials say the 26 paid 2,000 euros ($2,200) each to be taken by boat across the river dividing Turkey and Greece and then by road to Thessaloniki

Some 200 migrants and asylum seekers blocked a side-road off the Athens-Lamia national highway in eastern Attica for several hours on Tuesday.

The migrants are residents of a camp in Malakassa, northeast of the Greek capital, and held a peaceful sitting protest on the road after reportedly failing to block traffic at a railway station in the area earlier in the day.
