Sure, a large section of the Greek people "opened their hearts," but at the same time it appears that others were lining their pockets. The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) is conducting an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of European Union funds provided to improve living conditions for thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers stranded in Greece, Politico reports.

An OLAF spokesperson told the Brussels-based news website that the probe was launched following information submitted by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs last year. "The fact that OLAF is examining the matter does not mean that any persons/ entities involved have committed an irregularity/fraud," the spokesperson told Politico.

On Saturday, three journalists were detained following a complaint by junior coalition partner Panos Kammenos over an article in Fileleftheros newspaper alleging the mishandling of EU funds destined for migrant centers.

According to the article, businessmen close to Kammenos had received funding.

Perjantaina siirrettiin yhteensä yli 500 henkilöä. Aiemmin on jo noin 1 000 siirretty ja ainakin yhteensä 2 000 ilmeisesti tullaan roudaamaan sinne (mainittu jossain aiemmassa uutisessa). Tuskinpa nuo kovin kauaa Kreikassa pysyvät, vaan lähtevät vaeltamaan kohti pohjoisen hölmölöitä.

Another 400 refugees to be relocated from Lesvos camp to Greek mainland

Greece's immigration authorities plan on Friday to ferry another 400 asylum seekers from the squalid Moria camp on the island of Lesvos to more suitable facilities on the mainland.

The fresh transfer comes on top of the arrival of 107 refugees from Lesvos to Piraeus in the early hours of Friday after a sailing ban enforced amid strong winds on Thursday was lifted later in the day.

Authorities have already transferred more that 1,000 men, women and children who were deemed at risk in Moria, a state-run facility built for some 3,000 people and currently hosting almost three times that number.

They were ferried to Piraeus and Kavala in northern Greece and have been placed in facilities where conditions are said to be a lot better.

The move comes amid a public outcry concerning conditions at the camp but also the effects on the local community.

Terror at the Moria refugee camp

A group of ISIS followers are said to be terrorizing people in the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. On the pretext of religious propriety, they brutally punish whoever they deem criminal. Two DW reporters investigate the rumors.

Moria Camp on Lesbos is considered Europe's worst refugee camp. More than 8000 people live here, crowded together in an extremely confined space. The only thing that seems to work is crime: drugs, prostitution and violence.

Recently more and more refugees from Deir ez-Zor, one of the last strongholds of Islamic State in Syria, have been arriving in the camp. Since then it seems that crime in the camp has taken on a new quality.

A group of Syrians is said to be controlling most of the illegal activities. Anyone who doesn't toe the line or is in the way can expect physical violence or even death threats. The perpetrators often cite Sharia law as their justification. More and more graffiti glorify IS. The Greek authorities take no action.

Has IS successfully infiltrated Moria refugee camp? If so, what does that say about the way this terrorist network functions? And is organized crime increasingly positioning itself under the aegis of Islamic State? Bachir Amroune and Mariel Müller investigate.

Man killed in migrant camp brawl identified as 31-year-old Syrian

A man who was killed in a violent altercation at a migrant processing center north of Athens has been identified as being a 31-year-old Syrian national.

Police sources confirmed that the man died of massive head injuries probably sustained during a brawl, allegedly between rival groups of Syrian and Afghan residents at the camp.

They would not confirm reports of a second fatality, but said that seven people were injured in the incident instead of eight as originally reported and are being treated at a hospital in central Athens.

It is not clear what triggered the fight, though violence at migrant camps where resources are sparse and conditions cramped are not uncommon.

It appears that the argument between the two groups started on Friday and spilled over into Saturday when it became violent.

Police arrest 40 Afghans over fatal attack on Syrian man at camp

Police have detained 40 Afghan nationals for questioning following a large brawl on Saturday between a group of Afghan and Syrian migrants at a state-run camp of Malakasa, on the outskirts of Athens, that resulted in the death of a 31-year-old Syrian man.

The police intercepted the 40 suspects on a train in nearby Avlona as they apparently sought to flee the region. Another 70 people -- all Syrians -- believed to have been involved in the fracas were also detained at Larissis Station as they had also been trying to flee, it appears.

Some of the Afghan suspects who have been linked to the physical assault on the 31-year-old, are expected to face manslaughter charges.

The victim suffered serious head wounds, apparently inflicted with a sharp object, during the brawl on Saturday.

Over the summer, migrants at the camp had held protests over conditions at the overcrowded facility.

Thessaloniki: Migrant Smugglers Caught Using Luxury Cars

According to the Hellenic Police, five members of a criminal group that was acting on smuggling illegal migrants who live in Greece were caught in Thessaloniki's suburb of Pylea.

The five men, aged 25, 26, 33, 36, and 38 years old were spotted on Egnatia Odos highway, carrying an unusual number of passengers in luxurious and expensive cars.

When they were forced to stop, the illegal migrants tried to escape while the drivers were being arrested.

In total, five cars, 12 mobile phones and €1,650 ($1,915) were confiscated. The arrested criminals will be taken to the local district attorney.

Greece's anti-terror unit took part in the investigation of a deadly riot between Afghan and Syrian refugees on Saturday at a camp in Malakasa on the outskirts of Athens, due to suspicions that several of those involved were linked to Islamic terrorists.

However, Kathimerini understands that the suspicions of the anti-terror unit that "extremist elements" took part in the clash were not confirmed.

Police detained more than 100 people for questioning following the brawl that resulted in the death of a 31-year-old Syrian man and the injury of eight of his compatriots.

Ukraine-flagged vessel carrying 65 migrants intercepted

A Ukraine-flagged vessel with 65 migrants on board was intercepted early Tuesday morning by a Patra port authority patrol boat in the region of Kato Vasilikis in Aitoloacarnania, western Greece.

Three foreign nationals, aged 32, 30 and 37, were arrested on people smuggling charges.

Two more suspects were arrested – a 36-year-old Greek and a 37-year-old foreign national, who were the driver and co-driver of a truck that was waiting to collect the migrants on the shore.

A video seen by Kathimerini and a series of Facebook posts have shed light on a brawl at a migrant facility in Malakasa, eastern Attica, on Saturday that left a 31-year-old Syrian dead and eight of his compatriots injured.

The video was found on the cell phone of one of the facility's residents during a police search following the brawl.

Twelve people have been detained in connection with the fracas while police are still seeking a 25-year-old Afghan man believed to have played an active role in the Syrian's death.

Kathimerini has also seen judicial documents that describe the brutality of the weekend clashes between dozens of Afghan and Syrian refugees.

The same documents also describe an alleged attack by an ax-wielding assailant, said to be an 28-year-old Afghan, on a Syrian refugee.

Police investigators have scrutinized videos and photographs of Saturday's brawl that were posted on Facebook by members of a group called Refugees of Greece believed to be residents of the Malakasa facility.

One of the images shows the 31-year-old's body in a pool of blood. In another the dead man appears to have a cell phone shoved in his mouth.

Greek police arrested two people on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking and detained nine refugees and migrants near Thessaloniki following a car chase on Sunday morning.

The arrest came after policemen tried to stop a suspicious vehicle with 11 passengers moving on Langadas avenue.

According to reports, the driver sped up and gunshots were exchanged. The vehicle crashed on another car and a motorcycle but nobody was reported injured.

A 32-year-old Iraqi national was hurt in a brawl involving up to 60 migrants at the state-run reception facility nearby Diavata, in northern Greece, authorities said Friday.

Authorities said the victim had been hit with some sort of sharp object and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Police stepped in to quell the feud between rival groups that began late Thursday and lasted for about 20 minutes.

Dozens of migrants from Iran and Iraq have been camped on Aristotelous square in Thessaloniki for the past few days, waiting to be arrested by police, so that they can apply for asylum, local media reported on Sunday.

The migrants are sleeping in open air, in front of the police station at the White Tower.

The group were staying at the accommodation centre of the former Anagnostopoulou military camp, but were forced to leave recently as living conditions worsened.

On Saturday night, clashes broke out in the camp between refugees. One young migrant was stabbed in his ribs and had to be transferred to hospital.

As conditions at the 28 official migrant camps on the Greek mainland deteriorate under pressure from the transfer of thousands of people from inadequate facilities on the islands, many new arrivals are being placed in private apartments and hotels.

The Migration Ministry has initiated a program to place migrants in apartments, using 5 million euros donated by Parliament to tackle the refugee crisis. From September 21 to October 5, 1,567 people from Moria's hot spot on Lesvos had been moved into apartments in Volvi in central Macedonia, with 100 more expected in the next few days. Another 792 spots were created by renting nine hotels in Grevena, western Macedonia, of which 400 have already been covered.

Greece is pointing the finger of blame for the increased numbers of undocumented migrants flowing into the the Evros region from Turkey on the easing of vigilance by Turkish border authorities.

"There is very strong pressure at the Evros border while at the same time direct contact between local authorities in Greece and Turkey has stopped, which is making the problem worse," a senior official at the Citizens' Protection Ministry told Kathimerini.

Meanwhile, reports that some 500,000 Afghans have recently entered Turkey from Iran and Iraq have sparked fears they could be heading for Greece.

An army patrol of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia reportedly fired warning shots in the air at the country's border with Greece on Wednesday to stop a group of migrants from crossing it, MIA news agency reported.

According to a press release by FYROM's army, cited by MIA, the soldiers "vocally warned the group on several occassions, but they ignmored the calls."

"Therefore, a few warning shots [wrre fired] in the air, which prompted the group to head back to Greek territory," it added.

One migrants was detained by the army patrol while the others were sent back to Greece.

Police say they appear to be between the ages of 15 and 25, but their identities and nationalities are unknown.

MORIA REFUGEE CAMP REMAINS IN DESPERATE STATE DESPITE THREAT OF CLOSURE

As the deadline for Greek officials to address critical health and safety concerns at the Moria refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece, arrived on Wednesday, little appeared to have changed at the site to prevent its closure.

That afternoon, a steady stream of sewage water ran across the grounds, where as many as 8,000 migrants and refugees are currently sheltered. Garbage bins sat overflowing, as asylum seekers living in tents in an overflow area of the site known as the "Olive Grove" described conditions unfit for humans.

"This is not for humans, you are animals," one Palestinian refugee, a 26-year-old psychology teacher who said he had been living at the site for six months after fleeing Gaza, told Newsweek.

"It's not clean. Just one big problem," the teacher, whose name has been withheld to protect their identity, said.

The 26-year-old said that after months of waiting at Moria with "little food... no toilets" and "unclean" conditions, he would finally be leaving the camp for Athens early next week, in a bid to seek asylum in Belgium. 

"Next week... inshallah," he said.

It has been a month since North Aegean Regional Governor Christiana Kalogirou issued a 30-day deadline for government officials to address the "unsuitable and dangerous" living conditions public health inspectors uncovered at Moria.

Kalogirou warned that if the situation was not remedied within that time, the camp could face closure. The regional governor asserted that her office would shut Moria down if even one health or safety hazard remained.

Thirty days later, however, Marion Bouchetel, a policy advisor with Oxfam Greece, told Newsweek the sewage system at Moria has not been adapted to accomodate the number of people now living on the grounds.

Kalogirou's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Newsweek on whether her office plans to take action now that the 30-day deadline has arrived.

As such, the conditions plaguing Moria remain, offering migrants and refugees, as well as the organizations working to assist them, with little hope for change in the immediate future.

The migrants from sub-Saharan Africa – from Congo, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Somalia and Ethiopia – seem to be the angriest. They have formed their own little tent city high up on the hill. Most are men traveling alone and they're at the bottom of the list for eligibility for a container home in the camp.

A few kilometers away in Vathy, the island capital with just 5,000 residents, the crew of a coast guard patrol boat is resting on the pier. Bad weather has stemmed the flow of new arrivals. When night falls, most businesses on the waterfront lock up, as the public squares fill with young migrant men, many of them drinking alcohol and occasionally becoming rowdy.

"Five or six migrants are arrested every day for thefts or acts of violence," says Giorgos Kollaros, the president of the local bar association, which has taken recourse to the Council of State over the conditions at the hotspot. "We no longer allow our teenagers to go out alone. The town has changed completely."

Eleven suspected migrants killed in Greece car crash

Greek police say they have recovered the bodies of 11 people believed to be migrants who recently crossed from Turkey, after the car they were travelling in crashed in northern Greece.

Police said the crash occurred just after 5 a.m. on Saturday near the town of Kavala.

The car, which had been heading to the main northern city of Thessaloniki, collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction and burst into flames.

All those in the car were killed. The truck driver was being treated for injuries in a hospital in northern Greece.

Greek authorities have been seeing an increase in people illegally crossing the Greek-Turkish border in recent months.

Many are transported to Thessaloniki, where they head to police stations to be registered and apply for asylum.

Ainakin 22 ihmistä kuoli ja useita loukkaantui sunnuntaina läntisessä Turkissa, kun siirtolaisia kuljettanut auto suistui moottoritieltä kastelukanavaan. Kuolleiden joukossa oli lapsia.

Onnettomuudesta kertovat uutistoimistot AFP ja Reuters, jotka lainaavat turkkilaisia uutistoimistoja Anadolua ja DHA:ta.

Avolavainen kuorma-auto oli ilmeisesti matkalla Aydinista Izmiriin. Se syöksyi tieltä alas noin 20 metrin matkan. Ajoneuvo romuttui täysin.

DHA:n mukaan kuorma-autossa matkustaneet siirtolaiset olivat sopineet salakuljettajien kanssa kuljetuksesta Kreikkaan Samoksen saarelle. Kyydissä olleiden kansallisuus ei ole tiedossa.

Kreikan rannikkovartiosto pelasti 36 "hädänalaista" veneestä lähellä rajakaupunki Alexandroupolia.
Pelastetut sanoivat olevansa Afganistanin kansalaisia. Heidät vietiin vokkiin Fylakioon.

Thirty-six migrants rescued off Alexandroupolis

A total of 36 migrants were rescued from a dinghy west of the port of Makris, near Alexandroupoli, on Friday, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

They were located by a fisherman who alerted the coast guard.

The rescuees picked up by a coast guard patrol boat included 10 men, 10 women and 16 children, who told authorities they were Afghan nationals.

The news agency said all 36 will be sent to the reception and identification center in Fylakio, at the border regional unit of Evros.

Poliisi ajoi takaa ajoneuvoa Kavalan ja Thessalonikin välillä Pohjois-Kreikassa. Lopulta kuski menetti ajoneuvon hallinnan ja kolarin jälkeen se syttyi palamaan. Poliisi noukki sieltä 12 Turkista tuotua laitonta matua sekä kuskin, jonka epäillään kuuluvan ihmissalakuljetus­jengiin.

Twelve migrants, driver rescued from burning vehicle in northern Greece

Rescuers pulled 13 people out of a burning sports utility vehicle that crashed during a high-speed police chase on the national highway between Kavala and Thessaloniki in northern Greece on Sunday.

The 12 passengers in the vehicle are thought to be undocumented migrants who had been smuggled from Turkey, while the driver is suspected of working for the smuggling racket that brought the asylum-seekers into Greece.

Police, who have increased patrols amid a spike in arrivals through the land border with Turkey, started chasing the vehicle after it failed to pull over for an inspection shortly after noon on Sunday. The sports utility vehicle veered out of control and crashed during the chase, becoming engulfed in flames.

Reports said that a woman and a child are among the passengers and that two people suffered significant injuries but are not critical.

Last week 11 people were killed in a similar incident in roughly the same area.

Two children died after a boat carrying migrants sank just 50 meters off Turkey's western coast near Bodrum early on Monday, the coastguard said.

Seventeen people on the boat were rescued from the sea and seventeen others were found on the shore, the coastguard said.

Reuters television footage from the scene showed attempts being made to resuscitate a girl on the beach and an unconscious child being carried from the water to a nearby ambulance.

The coastguard did not specify the migrants' nationalities.

Two children later died at hospital, it said, adding that search and rescue activities were continuing.

Ensimmäisessä jutussa NGO-porukat ja hädänalaiset valittavat olosuhteista tavalliseen tapaan. Puukotuksia tapahtuu — ilmeisesti se on leirin tai kreikkalaisten syy, eikä suinkaan siellä majailevan "aineksen" aiheuttamaa. Tarjottu makaroni on huonoa. There are 58 different nationalities in this camp trying to co-exist in filthy conditions. Most of their days are spent lining up in a giant cage and often fighting for food that's not always edible. Raw sewage has found its way to the tents where children sleep, according to a recent report by the International Rescue Committee. At night, the water is turned off and clashes can turn violent. Stabbings are not a rare occurrence and women are more easily assaulted.

"If it gets any worse than this, I'll go back to Iraq," says Tooshy. He admits he buys drugs off some of some of the migrants to help escape the boredom. The drugs are smuggled in from Athens. "I can't live in the real situation," he says. I ask about the scars on his arm. "The Afghans," he answered. He says they jumped him with razor blades.

Nearly half of the camp's population, 48 per cent, is Afghan, an all-time high since the height of the migrant crisis. Among them is 17-year old Sami who would like to live in Toronto and become a martial arts champion. "Our children have become beggars," he told us during a protest outside the camp. People ask him to translate: one father complains of bedbugs in their family tent, another, of mice. Neda Yacoubi also speaks English: she tells me they're treated like animals here.

"We came here for a better life. We escaped from Afghanistan because there was war, but here we can't save our life. How can we do that? We don't study, we don't work, there's no food, so what do we do?" she asked.

Sami's words are particularly hard to forget. I asked him if Afghanistan is really worse than this place: "In Afghanistan," he says, "the Taliban kill us once, but in Moria they kill us every day."

Toisessa jutussa kreikkalaiset paikalliset asukkaat kertovat rikollisuudesta ja siitä, että tarvitsevat aseita perheensä ja omaisuutensa puolustamiseen. LESBOS, GREECE - As migrants fleeing their war-torn homelands flood into the crowded Moria refugee camp in Greece every day, the residents of a nearby village of the same name have become increasingly on edge.

The residents have reported break-ins, cases of arson, and animals killed for food in the village of Moria – located only a short distance from the country's biggest refugee camp on the island of Lesbos.

"You have to be careful. You must have a gun. You must have a knife to protect your family, to protect your property," resident Vassilis Batzakas told CTV's Daniele Hamamdjian during her recent trip to the camp and its surrounding areas.

"I think the worst thing indeed, is that we are on European soil, this shouldn't be happening here," said Martha Roussou, a senior advocacy officer with the International Rescue Committee.

"These are people fleeing danger and seeking protection in Europe and they actually sometimes arrive in a place that is more dangerous than the one they fled."

Itselleni tulee näistä Moria-jutuista mielikuva, että Kreikka hanskaa itse asiassa tuon hädänalaisten virran rajoittamisen nykyään varsin hyvin, "pehmeällä" tavalla, ainakin tuolla saaristoreitillä. Pitämällä olosuhteet Moriassa tarpeeksi ei-houkuttelevina, lähtee sieltä tietoa perässä tulijoille, joista osa saattaa muuttaa mielensä. Olisi mielenkiintoista arvioida, kuinka suuri merkitys virran hiljenemiseen on ollut Turkin toimista johtuvaa verrattuna Morian ansioihin.

Moriassa saadaan hyvää tulosta aikaan paljon pienemmällä rahasummalla kuin Turkkiin maksetut miljardit. 

Toisaalta, palautusten Turkkiin piti mielestäni sujua maksettujen miljardien ansiosta? Miksi tuota porukkaa tuolla Moriassa makuutetaan Turkkiin palautuksen sijaan?

Pohjois-Kreikassa on pidätetty Kavalan lähellä takaa-ajon jälkeen ihmissalakuljettaja, jolla oli auton kyydissä 7 matua.

Eilen napattiin Rodopin alueella (eli lähes samoilla seuduilla) takaa-ajon jälkeen kaksi henkilöä, joilla oli kuorma-autossa 20 matua. Toinen näistä kreikkalainen, toinen ulkomaalainen.

Migrant smuggler arrested in northern Greece

Police in northern Greece on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old foreign national following a car chase near Kavala after determining that he had seven undocumented migrants hidden in the vehicle.

Police officers had signaled to the motorist to stop for a routine inspection near Lagada junction but instead he accelerated in a bid to get away, prompting officers to give chase.

The incident followed the arrest on Tuesday in Rodopi of a 40-year-old Greek and an 18-year-old foreign national for smuggling 20 migrants into the country in a truck that also followed a police chase.

He eivät taineet koskaan edes saada pystyyn niitä frontexin systeemejä tulijoiden rekisteröimiseen. Eivätkä varmaan enää edes yritä. Tiedä myöskään, kuinka paljon tuohon toimintaan korvamerkittyjä rahoja on mennyt korruptiopoliitikkojen omiin arvopohjiin. Käytännössä nuo saaret ovat ihmisvälivarastoja. Ainoa mahdollinen suunta manner-Kreikka.
