The number of illegal migrants crossing into Greece has surged by 122 percent compared to the same period last year, with the Turkish land border under increasing pressure.

Migrants had turned first to Italy and now Spain as their preferred entry point to the European Union after the bloc began paying the Turkish government billions of euros to curb the number of sea crossings to Greece following a massive influx in 2015.

But arrivals are now increasing dramatically as people-smugglers exploit the Greco-Turkish land border marked by the River Evros — which is not covered by the EU deal — with 24,000 total arrivals recorded by July 8th, according to Gerald Tatzgern, of Austria's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

This represents an increase of 122 percent on the same period in 2017 — and may significantly underestimate the true scale of the influx, as illegal migration is by definition poorly recorded, with the Dutch government indicating that two-thirds of the migrants reaching them have not been registered in another EU country beforehand.

The Turks are not completely ignoring the issue as they have been accused of in the past, however, with the ANSAmed news agency reporting that they have apprehended some 7,000 would-be migrants in just the last week.

Tatzgern suggested that, while the migrant crisis has been partly contained on the Greek front, this could all change depending on the situation in Turkey — for example, if the economy crashes and migrants cannot find any work, legitimate or otherwise.

"Then there are hundreds of thousands [of migrants] on the streets [of Turkey], who would probably be pushing for Europe," he said, warning that there is "no relaxation in sight" in terms of pressure on the continent's borders.

Greek police say they have arrested eight migrants on suspicion of the murder of a Pakistani man trying to leave the country illegally.

Police said Friday the eight were suspected of involvement in the July 23 stabbing death of a 29-year-old Pakistani man who had been with three compatriots heading toward Greece's northern border with Macedonia.

The eight — six Afghans and two Pakistanis — allegedly robbed the four near the border, stabbing the 29-year-old in the process. His body was discovered the following day near a railway track.

Hundreds of migrants arrive in Greece each week from nearby Turkey. With routes out of the country officially closed to them, many try to head further into Europe from unguarded parts of Greece's northern border.

After a systematic and in-depth investigation by the Mytilene police, a gang of migrants was arrested on Monday, 30 July.

They are accused of forming a criminal organisation, committing robberies and burglaries in houses and cars in the wider area of Mytilene, the island's capital.

It is thought that the stolen goods are valued around 25000 Euros.

The head of the criminal organisation is a 41-year-old Tunesian, while four other migrants from Algeria and Tunisia, aged 18 to 37 years, took part as well.

The four migrants are charged with involvement in a criminal organisation, special cases of theft, as well as violations of drug laws.

Smugglers held after trying to ram coast guard

Authorities on the island of Kos on Friday detained 29 undocumented migrants and their two suspected smugglers yesterday following a chase that culminated in coast guard officers firing warning shots in the air after the smuggling boat unsuccessfully tried to ram their vessel.

The incident occurred on Friday morning off the coast of Aghios Fokas in southeast of the Dodecanese island.

After finally cornering the migrant boat, officers arrested the suspected smugglers – two men aged 51 and 55.

Meanwhile, authorities on Kythira, off the southern Peloponnese, detained another two suspected smugglers, aged 26 and 27, after the Dutch-flagged sailing boat they were on dropped 10 migrants off at a beach on the island.

Three years on, Greece's Lesbos looks back at migrant crisis

Three years ago, the Greek island of Lesbos found itself at the heart of Europe's greatest migration crisis since World War II.

At the height of the influx, some 5,000 refugees and migrants, mostly from war-torn Syria, were landing on the island's beaches on a daily basis.

Hundreds never survived the journey across the Aegean Sea. More than 800 people, including many children, died in 2015 in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The situation quickly reached emergency proportions for beleaguered Lesbos authorities trying to regulate the flow, register the exhausted survivors, and find shelter for them.

Local residents hastened to lend support, providing blankets, clothes and food until the arrival of refugee agencies and volunteer groups.

Three years on, the situation has changed drastically.

An agreement brokered between the European Union and Turkey in March 2016, in which Turkish authorities promised to stop people-smugglers in return for EU aid, has limited the flow.

EU border agency Frontex vessels patrol the waters between Greece and Turkey, as do NATO ships.

Some 35-80 people currently arrive on a daily basis, but even this is enough to keep the island's holding camps near breaking point.

There are over 9,500 refugees and migrants currently on the island, with the main camp of Moria filled to more than double its capacity. Very few are allowed off the island -- mainly the ill and vulnerable -- and there are frequent outbreaks of violence.

Authorities are at pains to keep new arrivals out of the path of tourists. They are allowed to land at secluded beaches and directly transported to camps. The beaches are then quickly cleaned of life jackets, inflatable boats and other debris.

Man arrested for illegally transporting migrants

A 19-year-old man is expected to appear before prosecutors after being arrested on Sunday after being apprehended transporting six people who did not have the necessary documents to enter the country.

The man, an Egyptian national, was arrested on Sunday on the Egnatia highway in northern Greece following a police chase.

Police subsequently found six Iraqi nationals in the car, all of whom lacked the required paperwork to enter Greece. They had paid money to another person to be spirited over the border with Turkey.

A man was seriously injured in a fierce brawl at a refugee camp at Thermopyles in central Greece, authorities said on Friday.

The fight, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, involved three refugees, and one of them lost consciousness after being hit on the head with a heavy object.

The injured man was rushed to hospital in the nearby city of Lamia after police intervened to break up the brawl.

It was not clear why the fight started.

Police in northern Greece have detained nine teenagers in a hostel for unaccompanied migrants, following a riot over allegedly poor food and internet services at the facility.

Police said the trouble broke out Monday in the hostel in the eastern Thessaloniki district of Pylaia, where 30 unaccompanied minors live.

They said residents set fire to their mattresses and caused extensive damage to the facility.

Police were called to the hostel and detained the youths, who are all Pakistani nationals.

Turkish coast guard over the past week apprehended 608 migrants and refugees who were trying to leave the country without regular documents to reach the European Union's coasts, the Turkish interior ministry reports. The route from Ankara has regained momentum this year.

During the first seven months of 2018, authorities apprehended 14,470 people who were trying to reach European shores, especially in the Aegean Sea, with an annual increase of about 60%.

Since the controversial agreement signed in March 2016 with Brussels, the number of people reaching Europe on a daily basis from Turkey had decreased significantly.

Refugees block national highway to protest living conditions

The Athens-Lamia national highway has been blocked by around 100 migrants and refugees living at the nearby Malakasa hotspot in eastern Attica.

The road block was initiated to protest against living conditions at the hotspot which had flooded earlier on Monday due to heavy rainfall in the area.

The protest has caused disruptions with traffic jams stretching for a few kilometers.

The Greek police detained 59 migrants in the region of the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki and seized two smugglers. The migrants were brought from the Turkish to the Greek side of the border river Evros and then drove in two groups with trucks headed for western Greece, the police said on Monday. Children 'ready to flee' violence at Greek refugee camp

At Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, there is deadly violence, overcrowding, appalling sanitary conditions and now a charity says children as young as 10 are attempting suicide. The Victoria Derbyshire programme has been given rare access inside.

"We are always ready to escape, 24 hours a day we have our children ready," says Sara Khan, originally from Afghanistan.

"The violence means our little ones don't get to sleep."

Sara explains that her family spend all day queuing for food at the camp and all night ready to run - in fear of the fights that break out constantly.

Conditions are so appalling that charities have actually left in protest.

The place smells of raw sewage, and there are around 70 people per toilet, according to medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

MSF says there are currently more than 8,000 people crammed into Moria camp, which was supposed to house 3,000.

The violence in the camp is extreme. In May, hundreds of Kurdish people fled because of a huge battle largely between Arab and Kurdish men.

Ali, who has now left the camp, says when he got to Moria with his family "we found that there was already existing sectarianism and racism, whether it was between Sunnis and Shias, or Kurds, Arabs and Afghans".

He adds that conflict between rebel groups in Syria has also landed inside the gates of the refugee camp.

"It's like the war in Syria and even uglier. We heard about rape cases in there, sexual harassment," he says.

On the day we are filming at Moria, yet another fight breaks out in the lunch queue for food. Two people are stabbed - others suffer panic attacks witnessing it.

Police in Greece on Tuesday said they had arrested three members of a Greek NGO on suspicion of helping migrants illegally enter the country.

The members of Emergency Response Centre International (ERCI) were detained on Lesbos, the Greek island with the most arrivals.

"The activities of an organised criminal network that systematically facilitated the illegal entry of foreigners were fully exposed," a police statement said.

Members of the group were in contact with migrants and refugees on social media groups and "actively assisted" their illegal entry into Greece from 2015 onwards, according to the statement.

To keep tabs on migrant flows, the accused also illegally monitored Greek coastguard and EU border agency Frontex radio traffic.

And any information gathered was not shared with Greek authorities, the police said.

Overall, six Greeks and 24 foreign nationals were implicated in the case, they added.

Greek police have arrested and charged a Syrian refugee with helping migrants illegally enter the country.

Yusra Mardini was arrested in what the Greek police are calling an operation aimed at dismantling a "criminal network", which consists of some 30 members of an NGO working on the island on Lesvos in the migrant reception camp.

Also arrested as part of the bust is a Greek national and one of the NGO's leaders, Nassos Karakitsos, and an Irish national volunteer, Sean Binder.

In 2015, Yusra Mardini was a teenager, and one of tens of thousands of refugees from Syria crossing the Mediterranean Sea in hopes of reaching the shores of Greece.

The young Syrian refugee made national news for her acts of heroism, when the overcrowded dinghy that Mardini and her sister were traveling on from Turkey to Greece experienced problems with the motor breaking down, leaving the migrants stranded in the sea.

Mardini, who represented Syria at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships, along with her sister and one other women, took to the water and pushed the boat until it reached the shores of Lesvos.

"Only four out of 20 on the boat knew how to swim," Mardini said to rio2016.com.

"It would have been shameful if the people on our boat had drowned. I wasn't going to sit there."

US-flagged yacht with 71 migrants stopped in Greek waters

Authorities in western Greece have arrested two people for allegedly trying to smuggle 71 migrants out of the country on a US-flagged yacht.

The Greek merchant marine ministry said the yacht was stopped in the Gulf of Patras following a tip-off. The vessel is believed to have been heading for Italy.

The ministry says the suspects were identified as 25- and 27-year-old foreign citizens. No details were available on the nationalities of the migrants.

Thousands of migrants enter Greece illegally every year, mostly by sea from Turkey.

Border crackdowns by other European countries have made it increasingly difficult for them to continue their journeys to Europes prosperous heartland.

Tens of thousands are stuck in Greece, including nearly 20,000 migrants stranded on the Aegean Sea islands where most smuggling boats from Turkey arrive.

Minkäs sille voi, kun matua pukkaa vaan koko ajan lisää eikä resursseja ole loputtomasti hyysäämiseen.

Jutun lopussa mainitaan myös, että saarille tuli torstaina 40 henkilöä. Tänään pysäytettiin jahti, jossa oli 88 läpsyä ja pari ihmissalakuljettajaa. Lisäksi Alexandroupolisin lähellä sattui kolari, jossa 24:ää matua kuljettanut pakettiauto törmäsi johonkin moottoritiellä.

UN refugee agency presses Greece on 'squalid' migrant camps

The United Nations refugee agency on Friday pressed Greece to improve conditions at the crowded island camps where thousands of migrants are held as part of a European Union deal with Turkey.

The U.N. agency said in a statement that conditions in the camps, where nearly 20,000 people live, are "squalid, inadequate and rapidly deteriorating."

UNHCR also urged the Greek government to move more migrants from the eastern Aegean Sea islands to mainland Greece.

Tens of thousands of migrants illegally enter Greece every year from Turkey, hoping to move on to more prosperous European countries.

Under the EU-Turkey deal reached in 2016, they are supposed to be kept on the islands and returned eventually to Turkey. But in practice, most apply for asylum in Greece, while there is a steady flow to the mainland of people Greek authorities designate as members of vulnerable groups.

"UNHCR is particularly concerned about woefully inadequate sanitary facilities, fighting amongst frustrated communities, rising levels of sexual harassment and assaults and the increasing need for medical and psycho-social care," the agency statement said.

It said conditions were "reaching boiling point" at the Moria camp on Lesbos, where 7,000 people were living in accommodation designed for 2,000.

While, according to the UNHCR, more than 3,000 asylum seekers on the islands have been given authorization to move to the mainland, lack of accommodation facilities there are slowing the process.

Greece's interior ministry said 49 people reached the islands on Thursday, while 40 others were transferred to the mainland.

Migrants also cross from the land border with Turkey. On Friday, police said seven people were injured when a van carrying 24 migrants crashed on a highway near the border town of Alexandroupolis.

Also Friday, the coast guard said it stopped a yacht with 88 migrants and two suspected traffickers on board off the western island of Cephallonia. The vessel was believed to have been heading for Italy.

Turkkiin saapuu edelleen epätoivoisia ihmisiä Lähi-idästä. He ovat läpikulkumatkalla Eurooppaan, kohti turvallisempaa ja järjestäytyneempää yhteiskuntaa, mutta moni jää jumiin Kreikan saarten ylikansoitetuille pakolaisleireille.

Sovimme, että ryhmän nuoret, 16-vuotias Hussein ja 20-vuotias Ali laittavat viestin, kun saapuvat perille.

Takaraivossa oli paha aavistus, ettei kaikki mene kuten ihmissalakuljettaja lupaa. Aavistus piti paikkansa. Ihmissalakuljettaja Ahmed, hänestä lisää myöhemmin, oli luvannut nuorille kunnolliset pelastusliivit ja turvallisen veneen, jolla he pääsisivät pienessä ryhmässä Samoksen saarelle. Matkan hinta oli 500 euroa per henkilö. Alin ja Husseinin lisäksi samalla kyydillä oli tarkoitus mennä isän ja tämän pienen pojan sekä noin 30-vuotiaan miehen.

Lauantai-iltana saamani viestit ja kuvat paljastavat karun totuuden. Pienessä kumiveneessä onkin ollut viiden henkilön sijaan 17 ihmistä. Venekunta on eksynyt matkalla. Vene on kaatunut ja ihmiset ovat joutuneet vedenvaraan Lesboksen saaren lähettyvillä. Suunta oli ollut täysin eri kuin alun perin oli suunniteltu.

Ali kertoi viestissään, ettei isää ja pientä poikaa näkynyt enää missään. Ali pelkäsi, että he olivat hukkuneet. Osa veneessä olleista oli loukkaantunut. Hän pyysi viestissä apua.

Jumissa leirillä

Nuoret olivat päätyneet Morian pakolaisleirille Lesbokselle. He itse eivät paikan nimeä tienneet. He osasivat ainoastaan viesteissään kertoa, että ihmisiä on niin paljon, ettei nukkumapaikkaa meinaa löytyä. Apua loukkaantuneille ei ollut saatavilla.

^Nyt selvisi myös miksi irakilaiset eivät hae turvapaikkaa Turkista. Siellä on jo niin paljon irakilaisia, että se on muuttunut vaaralliseksi maaksi:

Mutzanan oli tarkoitus jäädä Turkkiin. Siellä olisi ollut hanttihommia ja kulttuurikin lähellä irakilaista. Kotimaan ongelmat kuitenkin seurasivat mukana: Turkin irakilaisyhteisö alkaa olla laaja ja tieto paenneista henkilöistä saavutti nopeasti myös ei-toivotut tahot. Hengissä selviytymisen kannalta parempi vaihtoehto oli ylikansoitettu pakolaisleiri Samoksella.

Mutzanan sanoin " kuoleman polku on parempi kuin jääminen Irakiin tai Turkkiin".

Sen sijaan, että ongelmat ratkaistaisiin paikan päällä niiden annetaan levitä kaikkialle.

Molemmat kertoivat Izmirillä tavatessamme melko tyypilliset kertomukset siitä, kuinka heitä ja heidän perheitään vainotaan Irakissa.Taustalla on ammuttuja sukulaisia, puolisotilaallisten militioiden vainoa, pakoa eri maihin, piileskelyä, toivotonta tulevaisuutta.

Tulevaisuus Morian pakolaisleirillä näyttäytyy nuorille yhtä huonona kuin kotimaa.

Sana "kertomukset" on asiaankuuluva. Irak on rauhallinen eikä siellä ainakaan hallitus vainoa ketään. Mitään näyttöä militioiden väitetystä väkivallasta en ole nähnyt mediassa usean vuoden aikana.

Ehkä Irakissa poliisi pyrkii ottamaan rikolliset kiinni. Siinä voisi olla todellinen motiivi lähteä Irakista.

EU maksaa valtavia summia Turkille laittomien siirtolaisten takaisin ottamisesta. Miksi Kreikka ei lähetä huijareita takaisin Turkkiin?

Morian pakolaisleiri tunnetaan pahana paikkana. Siellä on ollut kuolemantapauksiin johtavia tappeluita, hälyttävän huonot hygieniaolosuhteet ja nyt tietoon on tullut jopa 10-vuotiaiden lasten itsemurhayrityksiä epäinhimillisten olosuhteiden vuoksi.

Afganistanista kotoisin oleva Sara Khan kertoi BBC:n toimittajalle, että hän on lastensa kanssa 24/7 valmiustilassa pakenemaan. Hänen mukaansa väkivallan uhan vuoksi lapset eivät voi nukkua kunnolla. Hän kertoi, että perhe käyttää päivisin aikansa ruokajonoissa ja yöllä valmiudessa pakenemaan eri puolilla leiriä puhkeavia tappeluja.

Olosuhteet Morian pakolaisleirillä ovat niin huonot, että osa hyväntekeväisyysjärjestöistä on lopettanut toimintansa siellä. Lääkärit ilman rajoja -järjestön mukaan paikka haisee kuin viemäri ja 70 ihmistä kohden on vain yksi vessa.

Osa ihmisistä leirillä majoittuu siirrettävissä mökeissä, osa mökkien välisissä teltta- ja pressuviritelmissä. Yhden pressun alla asuu 17 ihmistä, yhteensä neljä perhettä. Leiri rönsyilee jo aluetta ympäröivälle maaseudulle.

Leiri on alun perin tarkoitettu 2 000 ihmiselle, mutta sillä on tällä hetkellä arviolta yli 8 000 ihmistä.

Väkivaltaa

Toukokuussa väkivaltaisuudet leimahtivat äärimmäiselle tasolle, kun leirin kurdit ja arabit ottivat väkivaltaisesti yhteen.

Leirillä aiemmin asunut Ali kertoi BBC:lle, että leirillä esiintyy paljon erottelua ja rasismia sekä sunni- ja shiiamuslimien kesken että kurdien, arabien ja afgaanien välillä. Hänen mukaansa myös Syyrian konfliktin kapinallisryhmittymät näkyvät leirin porttien sisäpuolella.

- Siellä on kuin Syyrian sota, ja jopa jotain rumempaa. Olemme kuulleet raiskauksista ja seksuaalisesta häirinnästä, hän kertoi.

BBC:n kuvausryhmä joutui silminnäkijäksi tappelulle, joka puhkesi ruokajonossa. Tappelussa kahta ihmistä puukotettiin ja ihmiset joutuivat paniikkiin.

Hyväntekeväisyysjärjestöt ovat vetäytyneet leirin ulkopuolelle väkivaltaisuuksien vuoksi. Muun muassa Lääkärit ilman rajoja -järjestö päivystää leirillä, mutta sen klinikka on leirin porttien ulkopuolella.

Vakavasti puhuen: tähän ilmeisesti esitetään ratkaisuksi näiden väkivaltaisten kurkunleikkaajien, rasistien ja raiskaajien levittämistä ympäri eurooppaa. Ongelmat varmaan jäävät sitten leirille, liekö siellä maaperässä tai ilmassa jotain vikaa kun leiriläisistä itsestään sitä ei varmasti löydetä.

Irakilainen Ahmed on toiminut ihmissalakuljettajana jo kuusi vuotta eikä aio bisnestä lopettaa.

Paikalle tulee erittäin hermostuneen oloinen mies. Hänen tulonsa on ollut hiuskarvan varassa viime minuutille saakka. Avustaja on sopinut tapaamisen yksityiskohtia pitkin päivää, ja mies on perunut tapaamisen jo monta kertaa. Kyseessä on Ahmed, ihmissalakuljettaja. Hän toimii Izmirissä Turkissa.

Ahmed pelkää, että toimittajalle puhuminen riskeeraa koko bisneksen. Joudumme odottamaan avustajan kanssa pari tuntia ennen kuin Ahmed vahvistaa tapaamisen. Izmirin keskustassa sijaitsevaan ravintolaan hän ei kuitenkaan uskalla tulla. Alueella liikkuu liikaa poliiseja. Sovimme tapaamisen hieman syrjemmällä sijaitsevaan kahvilaan.

Ahmed on konkari. Nyt noin 30-vuotias mies tuli Turkkiin jo kuusi vuotta sitten, tarkoituksena käynnistää ihmissalakuljetustoiminta.

- Kävin keskustelun itseni kanssa. Euroopassa ei ole tulevaisuutta. Siellä en saa työtä, jonka palkalla pystyn tukemaan perhettäni Irakissa, hän perustelee ratkaisuaan.

Kyprokselle ei ole omaa "siirtolaisia" koskevaa ketjua (eikä sellaiselle liene tarvettakaan), joten hyväksikäytän tätä Kreikka-ketjua.

Kypros pyytää apua ja solidaarisuutta (eli taakanjakoa) muilta EU-mailta. Saaren rannoille on neljän viime päivän aikana tullut 140 "siirtolaista". Mikäli tulijoiden virta jatkuu, maa ei pysty sisäministeri Petridesin mukaan hoitamaan näitä.

Mikäli virta pysyisi tasaisena, tuo 140 läpsyä neljässä päivässä tarkoittaisi 1 050 läpsyä kuukaudessa, mikä taas olisi Suomessa väkilukuun suhteutettuna noin 6 800 läpsyä per kuukausi eli aikamoinen määrä (Kyproksen kreikkalaisen osan asukasluku n. 850 000).

Tänä vuonna tähän mennessä Kyprokselle on jätetty 4 022 turvapaikkahakemusta, mikä on 55 % enemmän kuin viime vuonna samaan aikaan.

Cyprus seeks EU help after spike in migrant arrivals

Cyprus appealed Wednesday to the EU to offer it more help with illegal migrants, warning it would be unable to cope if the influx of arrivals continues to its shores.

The European Union's easternmost state held an emergency ministerial meeting to address the issue after more than 140 migrants reached the island in the past four days alone.

"There will be a round of contacts with our European counterparts, especially from Mediterranean countries, facing the same problem, so there is better coordination of actions at European level where we demand European solidarity," said Cypriot Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides.

He said EU immigration policy should not place a "disproportionate burden" on front-line states or small members like Cyprus "that cannot develop structures... to absorb these flows".

Cyprus, in proportion to its population, says it faces one of the most serious problems of migratory flows compared with other countries.

"And if they continue to increase, these numbers will no longer be manageable," Petrides told reporters after the ministerial meeting.

He said according to EU statistics for 2018, Cyprus was first in terms of population-related asylum claims at more than 5,000 per million population.

Cyprus had received 4,022 asylum requests in the first eight months of 2018, which was 55 percent more than for the same period last year, said Petrides.

A gang who charged migrants up to 5,000 euros (£4,500) to be smuggled across the Mediterranean have been dismantled, the National Crime Agency has said.

The group trafficked migrants across the sea from Egypt to Crete, before beginning journeys across Europe and sometimes into the UK.

Six suspected gang members aged between 23 and 49 were arrested during a series of raids on the Greek island on Monday, the NCA said.

The network is said to have given little regard to the safety of the migrants and is suspected of being responsible for 60 being rescued off the coast of Crete in an unseaworthy vessel.

The NCA, which leads people-smuggling task force Invigor, said the men face prosecution in Greece for allegedly arranging accommodation and transportation of migrants, while providing them with false travel documents.

Greece's Moria migrant camp faces closure over public health fears

Greece's biggest migrant camp faces closure next month unless authorities clean up "uncontrollable amounts of waste", the regional governor said, citing public health risks.

The Moria camp, on the Greek island of Lesbos, has long been described by the United Nations and other human rights organisations as overcrowded and unfit for humans.

More than 8,300 refugees and migrants are currently in the former military camp in a collection of shipping containers and flimsy tents, more than double its 3,100-person capacity, according to the latest government figures.

In a notice published on Monday, Christiana Kalogirou, governor of the north Aegean to which Lesbos belongs, said the island's public health inspectors had declared Moria "unsuitable and dangerous for public health and the environment".

It said inspectors found "uncontrollable amounts of waste", broken sewage pipes and overflowing garbage bins. In addition, living quarters were inadequately cleaned, there was a high risk of disease transmission due to overcrowding and stagnant water and flies were found in the toilets.

"We are issuing a 30-day deadline ... to remedy all of the problems," the notice addressed to the migration minister and camp director says. "Once it expires we will ban its operation over even just one of the aforementioned problems."

Last month the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR urged Greece to speed up transfers of eligible asylum-seekers from Aegean islands to the mainland. It said conditions at Moria were "reaching boiling point".

Greece has moved asylum seekers to the mainland in recent months and a migrant ministry official it would speed up efforts to reduce numbers at the camps.

Greek police find some 150 migrants in trucks

Greek police have detained more than 150 migrants hidden in trucks in two separate incidents outside the northern city of Thessaloniki.

Forty-eight migrants from Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories were detained Tuesday after the truck they were traveling in broke down. The driver fled and the migrants were spotted getting out of the vehicle.

In the second incident, also Tuesday, 110 people were detained when a truck was stopped and searched outside the city. Police said it was not immediately clear whether smuggling suspects were among those being questioned.

Authorities have reported an increase in smuggling arrests in recent weeks, while detained migrants say they are currently paying traffickers around 2,000 euros to travel across the border from Turkey and make the 450-kilometer (280-mile) journey to Thessaloniki.

Greece: "Humanitarian Aid" Organization's People-Smuggling

Emergency Response Centre International (ERCI) describes itself as a "Greek nonprofit organization that provides emergency response and humanitarian aid in times of crisis...." It has reportedly abetted the illegal entry into Greece of 70,000 immigrants since 2015, providing the "nonprofit" with half a billion euros per year.

ECRI evidently received 2,000 euros from each illegal immigrant it helped to enter Greece. In addition, its members created a business for "integrating refugees" into Greek society, granting it 5,000 euros per immigrant per year from various government programs (in education, housing and nutrition).

With the government of Greece seemingly at a loss as to how to handle its refugee crisis and safeguard the security of its citizens, it is particularly dismaying to discover that the major NGO whose mandate is to provide humanitarian aid to immigrants is instead profiting from smuggling them.

On August 28, thirty members of the Greek NGO Emergency Response Centre International (ERCI) were arrested for their involvement in a people-smuggling network that has been operating on the island of Lesbos since 2015. According to a statement released by Greek police, as a result of the investigation that led to the arrests, "The activities of an organised criminal network that systematically facilitated the illegal entry of foreigners were fully exposed."

Among the activities uncovered were forgery, espionage and the illegal monitoring of both the Greek coastguard and the EU border agency, Frontex, for the purpose of gleaning confidential information about Turkish refugee flows. The investigation also led to the discovery of an additional six Greeks and 24 foreign nationals implicated in the case.

ERCI describes itself as:

"[A] Greek nonprofit organization that provides emergency response and humanitarian aid in times of crisis. ERCI's philosophy is to identify the gaps of humanitarian aid and step in to assist in the most efficient and impactful manner. Currently ERCI has 4 active programs working with refugees in Greece in the areas of Search and Rescue, Medical, Education and Refugee Camp Coordination."

A brawl at a migrant camp in Malakassa, north of Athens, has resulted in the death of a man and the injury of at least eight people, according to a preliminary reports from state and private media on Saturday.

The reports suggested that violence erupted between rival groups of residents at the camp on Friday and spilled over into Saturday.

Some outlets said the fight was between Afghan and Syrian asylum seekers, with the victim being a Syrian national.
