Migrant camp on fire: HUNDREDS trapped as blaze breaks out on Greek Island of Lesbos

AROUND 1,500 people could be trapped after a fire broke out at a migrant camp on the Greek island of Lesbos.

Images from the scene show huge, bright orange flames licking the edges of buildings at the Moria Refugee Camp as migrants flee from their makeshift homes.

Thick black clouds are also seen rising from the buildings, while witnesses reported hearing explosions and claim they started to smell smoke before being evacuated.

It is believed some migrants living in the camp had been told they were going to be deported before the fire broke out, with some involved in an altercation with police.

Authorities on the Greek island confirmed the fire broke out following a protest at the site.

And reports from the scene suggest some have even stopped fire fighters from attending the scene, throwing rocks at them to force them to back off.

Police said no injuries were reported and that the fire continues to burn.

Officers say a small group was involved in the protest at the camp, that caused damage to a large area of trailers, containers and tents surrounded by razor wire fences.

There were no immediate reports of arrests.

Mobile phone ban on refugees amendment lifted

An amendment submitted to Parliament that would have seen refugees and migrants who don't have valid passports banned from owning cell phones in Greece was withdrawn on Saturday after an outcry and the intervention of Migration Policy Ministry officials.

The amendment stipulated that refugees and migrants would have to possess a valid passport in order to be granted the right to have a cell phone. This would have made it next to impossible for them to get a phone because hardly any of them have a valid passport.

The amendment had been signed by Interior Minister Panos Skourletis, Digital Policy Minister Nikos Pappas and Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas.

Kreikassa ollaan myös tehty matujen olot hankaliksi, jos ei ole virallisia dokumentteja hollilla.

Asylum Seekers Being Blocked Out of Job Market and Health System in Greece

Thousands of asylum seekers trapped in Greece by slow bureaucracy are facing problems in being issued a social security number and tax identification code that would allow them to look for work and have access to public healthcare as they wait for the applications to be processed, writes Ekathimerini.

The issue was brought to the forefront in a written complaint on Thursday signed by 25 nongovernmental organizations and addressed to the ministries of Migration, Interior, Health, Administrative Reform, Labor, Economy and Finance.

The NGOs also claim to have received complaints from asylum seekers who were denied these documents outright or asked to produce impossible documents that could only be provided by state services in their war-torn home countries.

Greece Tests 'Education Passport' For Refugees

An international human rights organization is looking to provide education passports for refugees wishing to receive higher education and plans to test the efficacy of these projects in Greece.

The Council of Europe along with Norway, Britain, Greece and Italy's national qualification centers have joined together in an effort to provide education passports that were initially introduced in Norway in 2015. The initiative comes after European officials declared 20 years ago that university studies should be evaluated fairly per the 1997 "Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region."

Masoud Burhani — an Afghan refugee who fled from the Taliban in 2016 — met with the Ministry of Education in the Greek city of Skaramangas to support the project aiming to provide continued education opportunities to refugees, News Deeply reported Monday.

"I couldn't continue my studies in Afghanistan because I had to make a living for my family," said Burhani, a civil engineer. "But now I want to go to university."

Burhani hopes he'll be able to get a "European Qualifications Passport for Refugees," which will not only certify his academic transcript but will also list language proficiency and professional work experience. Higher education institutions generally require applicants meet their own specific requirements, but the new passport initiative would make it easier for refugees to meet these requirements and transfer their work and education experience across borders.

Fourteen refugees were given qualifications passports in March, one of which was a 29-year-old Palestinian Syrian, Mahmoud Alkoko.

"When I first heard about this paper, I thought, this is what I need," Alkoko said, adding that he had left his transcripts behind when he left the country in 2011. The initiative now aims to give all rather than just a few refugees these new passports.

The initiative has faced road blocks however, because administering education passports to refugees is not only expensive but also time consuming given that European countries have differing systems by which they process information as well as unique qualifications for admission into higher education programs. Refugees have typically waited months and or years before universities recognize their degrees or education qualifications.

If the "Education Passport" initiative succeeds, refugees will be issued a passport listing their qualifications a day or two after they have their interview for admission into the country as an asylum seeker. While the passport will not guarantee them any kind of entrance into a university, it will provide a clear break down of the skills that refugees possess with the hope that this resume of sorts will make it much easier for refugees to continue their education after fleeing their home countries.

As the law currently sits in Greece, refugees must get a bachelor's and then take a national higher education entrance exam, meaning that refugees would also have to learn Greek in order to advance or continue their studies and professional work.

More than 1,600 undocumented migrants returned home in July

A total of 1,645 undocumented immigrants were returned to their countries of origin last month, according to figures provided by the Greek Police Monday.

The migrants were forced to return home after being found entering or residing in Greece without the required permit, or they were returned to their native countries via a voluntary repatriation program developed in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The IOM program is subsidized by the European Union.

Most of the deported migrants were from Albania (872) and Pakistan (297) with another 98 from Algeria, 51 from Bangladesh, 46 from Afghanistan, 40 from Georgia, 37 from Iraq and 36 from Morocco.

In total 11,083 migrants have been repatriated since the beginning of the year.

Migrants break out of Amygdaleza detention camp

A group of 10 migrants escaped from the Amygdaleza detention camp, north of Athens, in the early hours of Friday, Kathimerini reports.

The migrants, said to be Argentine and Tunisian nationals, were staying in a room designated for returnees under the voluntary return process.

It was not clear how the ten managed to escape the facility.

Police later managed to locate and arrest five of the escapees. The search is ongoing.

"Vuoden 2015 poikkeuksellisen ruuhkautuneessa tilanteessa kaikki jäsenvaltiot eivät kuitenkaan ole kyenneet hakijoiden välittömään rekisteröimiseen", kertoi Maahanmuuttovirasto tiedotteessaan äskettäin. Tiedote selvitti epäsuorasti sitä, miksi Turun epäiltyä joukkopuukottajaa ei ollut käännytetty Suomesta vaikka tämä oli oleskellut Saksassa ennen Suomeen tuloa.

Maahanmuuttoviraston Dublin-tulosalueen johtaja Mikko Montin kertoo Uudelle Suomelle, että juuri rekisteröintijärjestelmän ylikuormittuminen vuosien 2015–2016 siirtolaisruuhkassa johti koko Dublin-järjestelmän pettämiseen. Ketjun alkuvaihe eli rekisteröinti on ratkaisevan tärkeä myös ketjun loppuvaiheelle ja koko turvapaikkajärjestelmän toiminnalle.

Tuo usein toistettu väite on Maahanmuuttoviraston johtajan suusta tietoista valehtelua. Kun kyse on Kreikasta, se ei yrittänytkään rekisteröimistä myöskään ennen vuotta 2015. Rekisteröintien määrä ei noussut tuolloin kuin noin kymmenesosalla. Kreikan kautta tulee edelleen Suomeen turvapaikanhakijoita, joita ei ole rekisteröity Kreikassa.

Turvapaikanhakija-aallon mukana Eurooppaan tuli myös 22-vuotias marokkolaismies, jota epäillään Turun joukkopuukotuksesta. Hän oli Suomessa turvapaikanhakijana, mutta vietti sitä ennen aikaa Saksassa. Tapauksessa ihmetystä on herättänyt se, että hänestä löytyy Saksassa oleskelunsa ajalta paljon merkintöjä viranomaisten papereista. Hän asui vastaanottokeskuksessa, vaikka ei ollut turvapaikanhakija, ja hän oli ollut poliisin pakeilla ainakin kahdesti epäiltynä muun muassa vastaanottokeskuksessa tapahtuneesta pahoinpitelystä.

Näiden Saksassa oleskelun merkkien perusteellahan voitaisiin kenties muodostaa jonkinlainen aikajanakin epäillyn liikkeistä. Eikö näillä ole mitään merkitystä Dublin-perusteille ja käännytykselle?

– Hankaluus on siinä, miten pystytään osoittamaan toiselle valtiolle, että henkilö on laittomasti oleskellut siellä yli viisi kuukautta, mikä olisi [Dublin-asetuksen mukainen] vastuuperuste [käännytykselle], Montin sanoo.

Kysymys on naiivi. Oikeastihan nuo tiedot vain osoittavat, että muut EU-maat eivät yritäkään rekisteröidä laittomia siirtolaisia turvapaikanhakijoiksi tai sitten poistaa heitä Euroopasta. Paljon puhuttu EU:n vapaa liikkuvuus tarkoittaa nykyään Euroopassa laittomasti oleskelevien avustettua vapaata liikkumista ja oleskelua.

Montinin mukaan Dublin-menettelyn edellyttämien rekisteröintien tilanne on nyt parempi, sillä esimerkiksi Kreikan saarille ja Italian rannikolle perustetut hot spot -rekisteröintikeskukset ovat tehostaneet toimintaa. Montin arvioi, että rekisteröinti on nyt "huomattavasti systemaattisempaa ja kattavampaa kuin 2015–2016". Suurin syy parantuneeseen tilanteeseen on kuitenkin Turkin kanssa tehty sopimus, joka hillitsee tulijamääriä.

Toinen yleisesti toistettu valhe. Miksi juuri Turkki-sopimus hillitsisi tulijamääriä, kun sen periaatteessa kaikkein tärkeintä osaa eli Turkkiin palautuksia ei ole käytetty juuri lainkaan?

Oikeasti tulijamääriä hillitsee se, että Kreikasta ei ole enää entisenlaista vapaata kulkua eteenpäin Makedonian kautta syvemmälle Eurooppaan.

Jos uusi massavaellus lähtee käyntiin, pettääkö Dublin-asetukselle keskeinen rekisteröintijärjestelmä uudelleen?

– Jos tarpeeksi iso määrä ihmisiä tulee laittomasti yli rajan, niin ei viranomaisilla ole riittävästi resursseja siihen vastata – että kyllä se jossain vaiheessa tulee pettämään. Kyllä se systemaattinen rekisteröinti tällä hetkellä on paljon myös sen ansiota, että määrät ovat niin paljon pienempiä, Montin sanoo.

Hän antaa esimerkin.

– 2015 syksyllä, kun hakijavirta kääntyi Unkarista Kroatiaan, Kroatia ilmoitti, että he aikovat rekisteröidä kaikki henkilöt. Mutta kun yhtenä päivänä rajalle tuli 7000 ihmistä, he tulivat siihen tulokseen, ettei heillä yksinkertaisesti ole riittävästi laitteita eikä henkilöitä siihen.

Kyse ei ole kapasiteetista. Itävalta kyllä rekisteröi rajan ylittäneet laittomat tulijat, mutta tuhosi samantien sormenjäljet, koska tulijat eivät hakeneet turvapaikkaa.

UNHCR on huolissaan itäisen Egeanmeren saarilla olevien matuleirien olosuhteista. Tilanne on järjestön edustajan Cecile Pouillyn mukaan vakavin Lesboksella, Chiosilla, Samoksella and Leroksella.

Esim. Samoksen leirillä on kuulemma sullottu 1 900 matua 700:n hengen tiloihin.

Ei kiinnosta sinänsä noiden elintasohuijarien paskat olosuhteet kyllä pätkääkään. Eipähän ole niin kovia vetovoimatekijöitä, jos joutuvat tuollaisiin mestoihin.

UNHCR urges action to ease conditions at Greek island camps

The UN Refugee Agency on Friday expressed concern at deteriorating conditions on Greece's eastern Aegean islands, as the number of new arrivals, which accelerated in August, is putting pressure on overcrowded reception facilities.

Speaking at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, UNHCR spokeswoman Cecile Pouilly said the situation is most worrying on Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Leros, which have received the largest number of arrivals, including many children. More than half come from conflict-hit Syria and Iraq, she noted, adding that arrivals in August came to 3,695 against 2,249 in July.

"While there has been progress to date, UNHCR is calling for robust action to improve conditions in reception facilities. We are also calling for the urgent deployment of additional national services staff, especially in the areas of health, psychosocial support and protection of unaccompanied children," Pouilly said.

"Arrivals on Lesvos, Samos and Leros have now outpaced the rate at which people are being authorized by the authorities to transfer to the mainland, further worsening already very challenging living conditions. Estimated departures for the mainland last month were 2,561 against 3,695 arrivals, based on data from the authorities," she added.

The UNCHR further stressed the physical and mental strain sustained by migrants and refugees who have been trapped at reception and protesting centers for months. "The threat of violence, self-harm and sexual assault is extremely worrying and more security is needed," Pouilly warned.

According to the agency, the situation is most critical in Samos, as more than 1,900 people remain "crammed into an area meant for 700" at the reception center in Vathy, despite the recent transfer of some 640 people to the mainland. Among them there are more than 600 children as well as pregnant women, serious medical cases and people with disabilities, the UNHCR added.

Chios saw more than 500 arrivals in August, according to the UNHCR, and the Vial center currently has over 1,100 people, including more than 100 who lack proper accommodation.

On Lesvos, tension remains high at Moria, the agency warned, pointing to two riots that broke out in recent weeks "in protest at the slow pace of registration and asylum processing for certain nationalities, as well as the crowded conditions." The island is currently hosting some 5,000 people,  Pouilly said.

On Leros, the number of migrants and refugees on the island came to 649 on Friday, according to UNHCR figures, with more than 290 arrivals being recorded in August.

More than 500 Migrants Arrive on Greek Islands in 2 Days

Over the past few weeks there have been hundreds of migrants per day that have been arriving from Turkey, on the Greek islands.  This has put a great load on the reception and registration centres of these islands.

Five hundred migrants landed on Greek islands in the past 48 hours, sounding the alarm for Greek migration authorities. The five reception and registration centres (hotspots) on Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos and Leros in the northeast Aegean, are already overcrowded and tensions are rising, as the hospitality centres are unable to offer the bare minimum in living conditions.

According to a Kathimerini report, there are administrative problems that do not allow for the proper operation of these camps. A hotspot employee has informed the newspaper that there is a lack of communication between the director of the coordinating agency of registration centres, Anthi Karaggeli, and the Deputy Minister for Migration Policy, Yiannis Mouzalas. According to the report, the employee said that Karaggeli has been absent from her office for a month now, and the hotspots are in a bind, as there are many documents that need to be signed by her.

The biggest problems appear on Lesvos, where there are 6,102 enclaved migrants and refugees, according to official data. About two thirds of them are at the Moria reception and registration centre, where it has become impossible to host so many people. Tents have been set out on the neighboring fields to accommodate the new asylum seekers who arrive on a daily basis.

Orvoksi jäänyt Fahim on yksi Kreikkaan jumiin jääneistä kymmenistätuhansista pakolaisista – "Halusin vain jonnekin turvaan"

Afganistanilainen Fahim katsoo syvälle silmiin yrittäessään kuvata, miltä viisitoistavuotiaasta tuntuu loputon odottaminen.

Fahim on ollut Kreikassa kaksi ja puoli vuotta. Ateenalaisessa Estian nuorisokeskuksessa Fahim on asunut kaksi vuotta ja odottanut pääsyä isosiskonsa luokse Itävaltaan.

– Odottaminen on vaikeaa, mutta on vain odotettava. Kyllä tämä menettelee, tosin enää minulla ei ole samaa kärsivällisyyttä kuin aluksi, Fahim toteaa.

Fahimin molemmat vanhemmat ovat kuolleet.

Isä oli poliisi, jonka Taliban-joukot tappoivat. Tämän jälkeen Fahim oli kotimaassaan hengenvaarassa. Alkoi neljä kuukautta kestänyt pakomatka Pakistanin, Iranin ja Turkin kautta Kreikkaan.

– Tulo yksin vieraaseen maahan ei tuntunut pahalta, koska halusin vain jonnekin turvaan, Fahim kertaa muistoja.

Äidin ja isän ikävä

Estian nuorisokeskuksessa hyörii kaksikymmentä erimaalaista, 13–17-vuotiasta poikaa. He ovat kaikki yksin tulleita pakolaisia ja siirtolaisia. Osa on anonut turvapaikkaa Kreikasta, loput odottavat perheenyhdistämistä ja lähtöä muualle Eurooppaan.

Maan hallitus on pääosin tyytyväinen nyt päättymässä olevaan siirto-ohjelmaan, jonka avulla turvapaikanhakijoita on jaettu Kreikasta muihin EU-maihin. Se kuitenkin kritisoi EU-maita, jotka eivät ole osallistuneet taakanjakoon turvapaikanhakijoiden jakamisessa Kreikasta muihin EU-maihin.

Tällä hetkellä jumissa Kreikassa on jumissa noin 50 000 pakolaista ja siirtolaista, joista kolmisenkymmentätuhatta on tarkoitus kotouttaa kreikkalaisiin oloihin.

Kreikan maahanmuuttoministerin Giannis Mouzalaksen mukaan isoin ongelma on se, että ne maat, jotka eivät hyväksyneet pakolaisia viivästyttivät samalla Eurooppaa pääsemästä yhtenäiseen ja kattavaan ratkaisuun siirtolais-ja pakolaiskysymyksessä.

"Älkää tulko Kreikkaan"

Yleinen toimintaohjelma vaihtuu Estiassa kuukausittain. Kahdesti kuukaudessa on tiedossa retki. Pojat pääsevät jalkapallo-otteluihin ja museoihin. Tämän lisäksi kullekin nuorelle on räätälöity oma päiväohjelma.

Päivittäinen siskon kanssa jutteleminen on Fahimille myös tärkeää. Estian asukkaat saavat kuukausirahaksi kymmenen euroa, jolla he ostavat kännykkään sim-kortin ja käyvät parturissa.

Kreikkalaisia nuoria Fahim kertoo tapaavansa lähikoulun koripallokentällä, mutta kielimuurin vuoksi lähempi tuttavuus on jäänyt.

Mutta mitä Fahim neuvoisi Afganistaniin jääneille maanmiehille?

– Lähtekää jonnekin, missä olette turvassa. Mutta älkää tulko Kreikkaan.

Osa Estian nuorista on nuorisokeskuksen johtajan Panagiotis Bouraksen mukaan anonut turvapaikkaa Kreikasta. Kovin valoisaa tulevaisuutta talouskriisin koettelemassa Kreikassa Bouras ei nuorille ennusta.

– Kysymys ei ole pelkästään siitä, saavatko nuoret turvapaikan, vaan myös siitä, mitä he tekevät aikuistumisen jälkeen, kun heillä on turvapaikka ja tiettyjä oikeuksia.

– Miten tukeutua kreikkalaiseen yhteiskuntaan, jonka on vaikeaa ottaa vastaan lisää siirtolaisia ja pakolaisia? Kun nuorille ei ole tiedossa töitä, eikä sitä taloudellista turvaa joka maassa oli joskus ennen, Panagiotis Bouras summaa.

Kreikan rannikolle saapunut taas tuhansia pakolaisia – "Tilanne saarilla on räjähdysherkkä"

Kreikassa Lesboksen ja Samoksen saarille saapuvien laittomien siirtolaisten määrä on jälleen noussut, kertoi maahanmuuttoministeri Yiannis Mouzalas Kreikan parlamentille eilen.

Sanomalehti Kathimerinin mukaan yli 3  500 siirtolaista on saapunut Kreikan rannikolle syyskuun aikana.

Olosuhteet ovat erityisen huonot Samoksen ja Lesboksen saarilla, joiden majoituskapasiteetti on ylitetty selvästi. Esimerkiksi Samoksella yli 3  000 ihmistä majoittuu tiloissa, jotka on suunniteltu 700:lle.

–  Kasvu siirtolaisten määrässä ei kuitenkaan ole vielä sillä tasolla, että voisi sanoa EU:n ja Turkin välisen rajanvalvontasopimuksen olevan romahtamassa, Mouzalas totesi.

Lomasaarien pakolaisleireillä nukutaan teltoissa

Kreikassa pelätään, että kun säät kylmenevät vuoden loppua kohden, tunnelma täpötäynnä olevilla pakolaisleireillä kiristyy. Osa leirien asukkaista joutuu jo nyt nukkumaan teltoissa tilan puutteen vuoksi.

–  Tilanne saarilla on räjähdysherkkä. Pakolaiset ja laittomat siirtolaiset ovat siellä jumissa, oppositiossa olevan konservatiivisen Uusi Demokratia -puolueen kansanedustaja Miltiades Varvitsiotis sanoi.

–  Teidän tehtävänne on valmistella maata kohtaamaan mitä ikinä muutoksia Egeanmerellä voi tapahtua, jos EU:n ja Turkin sopimus kaatuu, Varvitsiotis lisäsi arvostellessaan maahanmuuttoministeriä kriisin hoidosta.

More than 300 illegal migrants captured in Turkey's Çanakkale province

A total of 305 migrants from Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan attempting to travel illegally to Greece were detained in Turkey's northwestern Çanakkale Province, police reported Saturday.

Coastal Security teams reportedly also detained ten people organizing the escape, including seven Turks, two Russians and one Iranian, during the operation carried out in the Dardanelles strait near Çanakkale.

According to the report, the migrants were trying to reach Lesbos, a Greek island in the north of the Aegean Sea off the coast of Turkey.

After the operation, the migrants were referred to migration management authorities.

Turkey has been a main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria. Hundreds of migrants smuggled into the country are captured every year near the borders in western Turkey, or in its Aegean provinces.

Greek police arrest driver of van packed with 50 refugees

Police in Greece say a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly for trying to smuggle 50 people from the Mideast into the country in his van.

Police said the van was spotted on a highway near the Greece-Turkey border on Saturday, but sped off when officers signaled for the driver to stop. A chase ensued before the van was brought to a halt.

Inside the vehicle, officers found men, women and children — 30 from Syria, 19 from Iraq and one from Afghanistan.

Police said Sunday that the refugees paid 1,500 euros ($1,742) each to be transported into Greece.

The driver has been charged with endangering the lives of his passengers, who had to stand in the tightly packed van.

Police said another man was caught Saturday transporting 10 Afghans.

Refugees march to German Embassy, seeking reunification with families

Refugees who have been staging a hunger strike in Syntagma Square for the past week on Wednesday marched to the German Embassy, calling for their reunification with their families in Germany.

In a statement, the refugees called for the acceleration of the process for them to be sent to Germany, as part of a European Union relocation scheme for refugees, describing their demands as "self-evident."

Their appeals for reunification have been approved, the refugees said, noting that the law requires their transfer within six months.

"But they delay us for months, condemn us to uncertainty and keep us away from our loved ones," the statement said.

Migrants in Greece Demand 'Mama Merkel, Open the Doors!' At German Embassy

Around 150 people, including asylum seekers and pro-migrant activists, called on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to "open the doors" and allow more migrants from Greece to come to Germany.

The protest occurred this week outside the German embassy in Athens and focused mostly on family reunification. Fourteen asylum seekers, mostly from Syria, attended the protest with some of them claiming that they had been waiting to reunite with their families in Germany for over a year, Die Welt reports.

Protestors called on the German and Greek governments to allow the migrants to travel to Germany claiming that the six-month wait time had already long since passed. One 33-year-old Syrian said, "We have all the necessary papers, but we've been waiting for over a year," while another claimed that she had been waiting 19 months.

A similar protest also took place in Berlin outside the Federal Ministry of the Interior building. Around 40 individuals, mostly migrant men, held up signs saying: "Borders Destroy Families", "Freedom of Movement", and "I Want My Family". Berlin police secured the event and did not report any incidents.

Some charities, like Amnesty International, claim that close to 60,000 migrants live in poor conditions in Greece. The Greek government has previously expressed that it does not have the resources to care for the number of migrants who have filled up asylum centres on islands in the Aegean.

Pro-migrant NGOs have called on the Greek government to allow migrants on the islands of Lesbos, Chios, and others to be allowed to travel to the mainland in order to get better housing.

The issue of migrant family reunifications has also been a major contention between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the German Green party who are currently stalling on coalition negotiation talks. Some allies of the chancellor have argued that she should make concessions on the issue in order to prevent a snap election which could lead to a "disaster" for her party.

Greek police arrest trafficker with 90 migrants in truck

Greek police say they have arrested a trafficker carrying 90 migrants in his truck container.

The truck was inspected outside the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki Friday morning, police announced Saturday.

Police arrested the truck driver, a 55-year-old Greek man.

The migrants included 21 minors, police said, with more than 60 Iraqis and others from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Congo and Iran. They had crossed from Turkey, having paid 1,800 euros ($2,100) each to be transported to Athens, police said.

In a separate incident close to Greece's border with Turkey, police arrested a 39-year-old Syrian national who was carrying ten migrants, nine Syrians and one Iraqi in his passenger car, police said.

Riot Breaks Out in Migrant Camp on Lesvos Island

Greek Police were called in the early hours of Monday morning, to quell a riot that broke out at the Moria refugee processing center on Lesvos.

Reports suggested the riot was mostly restricted to the area of the massively overcrowded camp; which houses some 350 unaccompanied minors, and caused damage to UNHCR facilities and the office of a non-governmental organization.

Authorities on the island of Lesvos were on strike on Monday urging residents to take part in anti-government protests against the policy of containment of refugees and migrants on Greece's islands.

In a statement, the island's municipality called the strike against the policy of turning Lesvos into an "island prison."

The Greek government and the EU have ignored pleas from the mayors of Lesvos, and the nearby islands of Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos, to allow more migrants to travel to the Greek mainland, resulting in major overcrowding at the island facilities.

More than 8,000 migrants and refugees are stranded on Lesvos, where the reception capacity stands at 1,500.

Auto syöksyi rotkoon - neljä maahanmuuttajaa kuoli poliisin takaa-ajossa Kreikassa

Autoa ajoi pakistanilainen mies, jota epäillään ihmissalakuljettajaksi.

Neljä maahanmuuttajaa on kuollut ja viisi loukkaantunut poliisin ajojahdissa Pohjois-Kreikan Kavalan kaupungin läheisyydessä, kertoivat Kreikan viranomaiset keskiviikkona.

Thessalonkin poliisin mukaan autoa ajoi 35-vuotias pakistanilainen mies, jota epäillään ihmissalakuljettajaksi. Auto syöksyi tiistaina rotkoon kuljettajan yrittäessä paeta viranomaisia. Myös kuljettaja loukkaantui.

Autossa oli yhteensä yhdeksän miestä, kertoi uutistoimisto AFP. Viisi loukkaantunutta toimitettiin sairaalaan Kavalassa. Yksi heistä on kriittisessä tilassa.

Poliisi ei ole kertonut autossa olleiden henkilöiden kansallisuutta.

Four Migrants Killed in Police Chase in Northern Greece

Four migrants were killed and five others were seriously injured on Tuesday when their vehicle crashed near Nea Peramos, on a provincial road between Kavala and Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

According to reports, eight illegal migrants were on-board the vehicle driven by a trafficker, when police tried to stop it.

The trafficker refused and a high-speed chase followed which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle which fell over a cliff.

Emergency services that rushed to the scene freed five of those trapped inside the vehicle; who are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

The other four died instantly.

The car was carrying the migrants west from the Turkish border, which they had illegally crossed.

Greek police have not yet revealed the nationalities of the migrants.

Islanders to descend on Athens over refugee crisis

Protesters will converge outside the Immigration Policy Ministry on Tuesday to demand immediate relief for the eastern Aegean islands of Samos, Lesvos and Chios, where facilities for migrants and refugees are overflowing with thousands of stranded asylum seekers.

The rally is being organized by the municipalities of the three islands and aims to publicize the plight of asylum seekers who have been trapped there for more than a year, testing local communities.

"We have decided to protest and to demand again the immediate decongestion of our islands, so that the government reacts to the problem,"  a joint statement by the municipalities read.

To this end, Samos Mayor Michalis Angelopoulos is in contact with islander associations in Athens to get their support.

Currently the islands of the Aegean are home to a total of 15,486 refugees and migrants, of whom 6,520 are at Lesvos's Moria hotspot, which was designed to hold 2,300 people.

Similarly, on Samos there are 2,083 people sheltered at the center near Vathi which has a capacity of just 700, as does the Vial facility on Chios, which is currently sheltering 2,377 people.

With winter arriving, hundreds of people – half of whom are children – at the Lesvos and Chios hotspots are still living in summer tents and exposed to the elements, without access to basic hygiene facilities.

Reports said that work to place prefabricated huts next to the Vial hotspot to help ease the crowded conditions at the center and to make improvements to existing facilities was put on hold on Friday by a local court, pending a January 16 trial which will examine a lawsuit filed by the Chios Municipality against the Immigration Policy Ministry over its decision to house migrants and refugees at that specific hotspot.

Meanwhile, in a government bid to relieve some of the pressure on the islands, 500 people were transferred in the last two days alone from the islands to the Greek mainland. Nonetheless, 50 more people arrived on the islands' shores from Turkey on Friday.
