Kreikan saarille saapui maanantain ja keskiviikon keskipäivän välillä 809 tulijaa.

Viranomaiset siirsivät 389 ihmistä saarilta mantereelle keskiviikkona ja veivät heidät mantereella sijaitseviin vokkeihin.

Viranomaislähteiden mukaan suurimmalla osalla mantereelle siirretyistä ei ollut papereita ja he sanoivat hukanneensa ne matkalla. Mikä sattuma. 

Jotkut ovat sitä mieltä, että siirrot mantereelle lisäävät tulijoita, kun he tietävät, etteivät joudu odottamaan saarilla.

On yleistä tietoa, että he pääsevät jatkamaan matkaansa helpommin mantereelta kohdemaihinsa Länsi- ja Pohjois- Euroopassa.

Despite talks, migrant flows continue

Despite the ongoing talks on a Europe-wide and diplomatic level on how to assist Greece with the threat of a new crisis looming, migrant flows to the islands are continuing to rise, with 809 people having landed on their shores after traveling from the Turkey coast from Monday until Wednesday noon.

In response to the increase, another 389 people were ferried to Piraeus port Wednesday from Symi in the southeastern Aegean and were transferred by bus to six camps on the mainland – in Corinth, Thiva, Doliana, Filippiada, Skaramanga and Koutsohero – as part of an ongoing plan to decongest island camps. According to information from people involved in transporting the migrants, most did not have any identification documents, claiming they had lost everything during their journey. [...]

Greek authorities evacuate island migrant camp after fire

Greek authorities were evacuating an overcrowded camp for asylum-seekers on the eastern Aegean island of Samos, where a large fire broke out following clashes between residents.

Police said no injuries have been reported from Monday's fire at the Vathy camp, where more than 4,000 migrants and refugees live in facilities designed for a few hundred people.

Police said it was unclear what started the blaze as Afghan and Syrian camp residents clashed.

Protesters on the island of Lesvos, in the eastern Aegean, have reportedly prevented the Open Arms – a humanitarian vessel operated by Spanish NGO Proactive – from docking at the northern harbor of Skala Sykamias, reports said.

The incident took place on Monday as a group of people, believed to be residents of Petra and Molyvos villages, reportedly threw stones at the vessel which currently remains anchored at around 200 meters from the coast.

Greek police officials and members of the EU's Frontex border agency arrived at the scene.

The population at the Reception and Identification Centre in Moria on the Greek island of Lesvos, with a capacity of 3,000 individuals, reached an all-time record of 13,842 people, authorities announced on Tuesday.

Migrants and refugees continue to pour in to the island from neighboring Turkey, at a rate of more than one hundred every day.

A total of 271 foreign nationals arrived on the shores of Lesvos in the 36 hours between midnight on Sunday and noon on Tuesday, while another 80 migrants arrived on Chios and 135 on Samos.

Of those in the Moria camp, 1060 are unaccompanied or separated children seeking asylum, of whom 55 are expected to depart at the end of the week in a bid to relieve overcrowding in the camp.

A total of 997 migrants reached Lesvos the previous week (October 7-13), while another 490 landed on Chios and 76 on Samos. This brings the total number of migrants and refugees landing on the shores of Greece's northern Aegean islands last week to 1,563.

Europe must be ready for the possibility of a new refugee influx, Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday, as an unfolding Turkish offensive in Syria could see more people flee the conflict-ridden region.

"Europe must be prepared for the eventuality of a new migratory and refugee wave coming through Greece," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told AFP in an exclusive interview 100 days after taking office.

With some 70,000 asylum-seekers on its soil, -- including nearly 33,000 on islands near Turkey -- Greece is concerned that the Turkish offensive against Kurdish-controlled areas will overwhelm already overcrowded camps.

Turkey houses some 3.6 million Syrian refugees, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already threatened to "open the gates" to allow more to leave for Western countries if his plans to resettle them in northern Syria fail.

Mitsotakis, who has already met with Erdogan in New York, rejects this as blackmail.

"The idea that Europe can be blackmailed by a threat of unleashing waves of refugees and migrants within Europe is not acceptable as a proposition," he said.

"Our number one priority (is to) accelerate the asylum process. When someone is not entitled to asylum, then he or she needs to return to Turkey," the conservative leader says.

But he insists that Greece will need "more European support, the technology to identify the boats even before they leave the Turkish shore, the ability to communicate with the Turkish coast guard so the boats are actually stopped within Turkish territorial waters."

Mitsotakis is also critical of the refusal of several EU states, mainly in eastern Europe, to take in even unaccompanied minors.

"There need to be consequences for those who choose not to participate in this exercise of European solidarity," he says, adding that he planned to raise the issue at the EU council starting Thursday.

"We have between 3.000 and 4.000 unaccompanied minors in Greece, it wouldn't be very difficult for European countries to divide this number and take some of the burden from Greece in managing this problem."

No niin. Nyt saaria aiotaan tyhjentää oikein kunnolla mantereelle. Viranomaiset aikovat siirtää 10 tuhatta tp-hakijaa mantereella sijaitseviin vokkeihin (ja avata uusia).

Balkanin maiden rajavartijat ovat varmasti iloissaan laittomien rajanylittäjien määrän kasvusta, kun nuo lähtevät kohti Länsi-Eurooppaa.

Lisäksi Kreikka haluaa, että tp-hakijoita taakkajetaan sieltä muihin EU-maihin uudessa EU:n väliaikaisessa taakanjossa. He tulevat ehdottamaan tätä 8. lokakuuta Luxemburgissa pidettävässä taakanjakoa käsittelevässä kokouksessa.   

Suunnitelmaa on päivitetty, mantereelle siirrettävien määrä tuplataan 20 tuhanteen vuoden loppuun mennessä.

Uusia vastaanottokeskuksia ei avata entisiin sotilastukikohtiin, vaan vaan hotelleihin ja muihin kiinteistöihin.

At least 20,000 refugees and migrants will be transferred from the Greek islands to the mainland by the end of the year, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis was cited as saying by New Democracy sources on Thursday. [...]

Citing Chrysochoidis, party sources said that the push will concern families, which will be distributed between different parts of Greece and housed in hotels and other facilities.

Tp-hakijoiden siirtäminen mantereelle on saanut aikaan vastustusta.

Pohjois-Kreikassa Thessalonikin lähellä sijaitsevassa Vrasnan kylässä paikalliset estivät 400:n Samokselta siirretyn tp-hakijan majoituksen paikallisiin hotelleihin.

He tukkivat tien tp-hakijoita kuljettavalta 8 bussin saattueelta ja suostuttelivat hotellinomistajat luopumaan majoituksesta.

Tp-hakijoita kuljettava saattue kääntyi pois ja vei heidät Ateenan lähistöllä sijaitsevaan Chalkidan kaupungiin.

Villagers in northern Greece block refugees from settling in local hotels

Authorities were forced to abandon plans to house about 400 refugees in a small seaside village in northern Greece on Tuesday night, after residents vehemently opposed their settlement in local hotels.

The refugees, who had been transferred from an overcrowded camp in Samos to the mainland, travelled with eight buses to the village of Vrasna, northeast of Thessaloniki.

When they reached the outskirts of the village, they found two groups of local residents blocking their way. Riot police was also called in when local hoteliers, under pressure from the protesters, reneged on their initial agreement to house the new arrivals. [...]

At 4 a.m., and as the deadlock continued, authorities eventually decided to turn back and head towards the town of Halkida, Evia - a ride that will take about eight hours, according to Voria.

Rights groups attack Greece on asylum plan, PM says burden is heavy

Human rights groups urged Greece on Tuesday to scrap plans they say will restrict access to protection for asylum seekers as the government said the burden of dealing with an influx of migrants was getting too heavy to bear.

Athens is currently struggling with the biggest resurgence in refugee arrivals since 2015, when more than a million people crossed into Europe from Turkey via Greece.

The conservative government has proposed new legislation that shortens the asylum process by cutting out some options for appeal and makes it easier to deport those rejected.

But aid groups say the draft legislation would make it easier to detain asylum seekers for longer periods, and includes numerous procedural changes that would impede access to a fair asylum process and compromise the right of appeal.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International Greece joined United Nations refugee agency UNHCR and a spate of other groups in a chorus of disapproval on Tuesday over the changes.

"The bill is a naked attempt to block access to protection and increase deportations in the face of the recent increase in arrivals," said Eva Cosse, Greece researcher at HRW.

According to official data from the Greek Ministry of Citizen's Protection, a total of 795 new migrants and refugees arrived on Greek shores on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30, until 12 o'clock noon, local time.

Nearly all the incidents took place in the Eastern Aegean islands, where the migrant housing situation long ago exceeded its limits.

Official data show that the camp of Moria on the island of Lesvos, houses 14,427 individuals, when the original plans for the premises were to accommodate a maximum of 3,000 people.

Lesvos currently is home to 16,658 migrants, of whom 230 arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday morning alone.

Kyproksen sisäministeri Petrides varoittaa, että nykyisen vyöryn jatkuessa turvapaikkahuijarien määrä maassa ylittää viiden vuoden päästä jo 100 000:n rajan. Lisäksi hän tuttuun tapaan haluaa solidaarisuutta ja taakanjakoa EU-maiden kesken.

Cyprus could have 100,000 asylum seekers in just five years says minister

The number of asylum seekers in Cyprus is set to exceed 3.5 per cent of the population, Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides said on Tuesday, adding that migration was the leading example of the failure of a European policy.

If the current trend continues Cyprus will have 100,000 asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants in just five years, Petrides said. "You understand what this means for a country like Cyprus," he added.

Petrides slammed what he called the anachronistic European legal framework that allows economic migrants to abuse the system and called into question the so-called solidarity of member states when it comes to redistribution of asylum seekers.

Cyprus recently asked the EU to redistribute 5,000 asylum seekers, saying authorities could not cope with processing the increasing numbers of applicants.

Speaking at a conference organised on Tuesday by the European Parliament's Office in Cyprus, the European Commission Delegation to Cyprus and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on the 'Reception and Integration of Refugees', Petridis mentioned the 5,000 he asked the Commission to redistribute.

He had sent a letter to this effect in August, he said. However, it was not even answered, he said. "So how can we talk about solidarity?"

"We are currently experiencing the largest population displacements ever seen and according to the UN 250 million to 300 million people are migrating each year," Petrides said, adding that around 50 million of these are recognised as refugees under the Geneva Convention.

Petrides said as long as the EU's "anachronistic system" remained in place, the system would continue to be abused.

The number of asylum seekers in Cyprus in 2019, he said, would exceed or reach 15,000, "which is close to 1.8 per cent of the population". This would reach 3.5 per cent if the number of those already offered protection status is included, he said. "That percentage is the largest in the EU," Petrides said.

Comparing, he said in Italy the number was 0.4 per cent, in Spain 0.16 per cent, while for 11 other EU countries the rates were below 0.1 per cent.

Kreikan saarilla olevien siirtolaisten tilanne on "räjähdysherkkä" ja "katastrofin partaalla", sanoo Euroopan neuvoston ihmisoikeusvaltuutettu Dunja Mijatovic.

Egeanmeren saarilla olevien siirtolaisten tilanne on dramaattisesti huonontunut vuoden aikana. Mijatovic vaati välittömiä toimenpiteitä, jotta tuhansien ihmisten elinoloja saadaan parannettua.

Monet ihmiset ovat jääneet jumiin Kreikan saarille, kun Euroopan maat eivät ole suostuneet vastaanottamaan uusia pakolaisia tai turvapaikanhakijoita. Ihmisoikeusjärjestöt ovat jo pitkään varoitelleet ääriään myöten täynnä olevien leirien oloista.

Kreikassa on viikonlopun aikana kuljetettu siirtolaisia pois saaristossa sijaitsevilta leireiltä kohti Manner-Kreikkaa.

Viranomaisten mukaan viikonlopun aikana Morian leiriltä Lesboksen saarelta on kuljetettu noin 800 siirtolaista Eleusiksen satamaan. Siirtolaisia on kuljetettu Kreikan laivaston aluksilla.

Nimettömänä pysyttelevä hallinnon virkamies on kertonut uutistoimisto AP:lle, että hallituksen suunnitelmissa on siirtää noin 5 000 siirtolaista pois saaristosta seuraavien kahden viikon aikana.

Siirtolaiset majoitetaan hotelleihin, koska turistikauden huippu Kreikassa on ohi tältä vuodelta.

Kyproksella poliisi pidätti aluksi kaksi epäiltyä ihmissalakuljettajaa, joiden koillisrannikolle saapuneessa veneessä oli 131 läpsyttelijää.

Cyprus police said Tuesday that they detained two Syrian men on suspicion of human trafficking following the arrival of a boat loaded with 131 Syrian migrants on the island nation's northeastern coast.

Police said the two men were aboard another vessel that had shadowed the boat ferrying the migrants as it approached the Cypriot coastline on Monday.

Cypriot authorities had tracked the movements of the migrants' boat by radar.

The men, ages 43 and 53, were arrested after a marine police patrol boat intercepted their vessel off the Akamas nature preserve.

Both men face charges including aiding and abetting the illegal entry of migrants in Cyprus and people trafficking by a sea route.

Paphos police arrested on Tuesday a third person in connection with the arrival on Monday of a boat carrying 131 migrants.

The man arrested is a 38-year-old from Limassol and is allegedly the owner of the high-speed boat used by two Syrian nationals believed to be the migrants' traffickers. They were arrested on Monday after trying to flee the area once police  arrived. The two Syrians were remanded on Tuesday for eight days.

The 38-year-old is being investigated among other things for assisting in the unlawful entry to the country of third-country nationals and human trafficking.

A Greek nationalist group's plan to throw a pork barbecue near a refugee camp has led to a debate in the country's parliament. Critics want to do something, but some say that would mean attacking the Greek way of life.

On Tuesday Greek parliamentarians debated how to react to a nationalist group's plans to hold a pork barbecue "protest" near a refugee camp.

This week the Greek nationalist group Enomemoi Makedones, or United Macedonia, made calls online for people to attend a "barbecue protest" on Sunday near the refugee camp Diavata, located a few miles west of Thessaloniki. Attendees are to consume pork and alcohol in protest of the growing number of immigrants in Greece.

For Muslims, the consumption of pork and alcohol is forbidden by the Koran.

In a parliamentary debate in Athens broadcast on television Tuesday, left-wing politician Christos Giannoulis said it was difficult to say whether the event broke any laws, but called it a "disgrace" and a "provocation against people of other beliefs."

He called for the organizers to be held accountable for this "new type of political and criminal behavior."

Lisäksi saaristossa on estetty tp-hakijoiden saarten välisiä siirtoja saartamalla satama ja estämällä taakan purku omalle saarelle.

Greek government plans closed departure centers for failed asylum seekers (6.11.2019)

At least five closed pre-departure centers will reportedly be created for migrants who are not entitled to asylum in Greece, while the government will seek to ensure the return to Turkey of 10,000 by the end of 2020.

"Those [migrants] that have entered illegally and are not entitled to asylum cannot move around the country uncontrollably and have no other choice but to return [to Turkey]," government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Tuesday.

According to reports, these centers will be located on the islands and the mainland and will most likely be former military camps that can accommodate large numbers.

Referring to the migrant and refugee issue, which he described as a matter of "national significance," Petsas said the immediate aim is to decongest island camps with the transfer of 4,000 refugees to shelters on the mainland by the end of November.

Petsas also took a swipe at the previous, leftist government, saying that it left behind "chaotic situations and anarchy."

Citing data from 2019, he said there were 68,000 pending asylum applications when the new government came to power and that just 1,806 migrants had been returned to Turkey over four years. 

Given the opposition of local communities to the transfers, the plan, which was drafted under the instruction of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, foresees that asylum seekers will not exceed 1 percent of the local population in the regional units they are transferred to.

Greek police arrest Georgian truck driver for transporting 41 illegal migrants to Greece

Greek police have arrested a 40-year-old Georgian national who was caught driving a refrigerated truck with 41 migrants in the back, the Guardian reports.

They intended to get to Europe illegally.

Eight people were rushed to hospital with respiratory problems.

The vehicle's refrigeration system had broken down by the time the truck was stopped at a motorway toll station outside the city of Xanthi in north-east Greece.

Choosy Migrants Turn Down Free Accommodations at Greek Monastery (video)

A group of migrants on Thursday refused free accommodations in a monastery in western Greece which had been offered to them by the authorities in an effort to relieve the crowding at the migrant camps on the Greek islands.

Dozens of migrants arrived on buses provided for by the authorities at the ancient monastery of Poretsos in the scenic, mountainous Elis (Ilia) region, but after inspecting the place, they decided to leave.

Some of them said that the accommodation provided "was not good" and that conditions were far better in the infamous migrant camp of Moria on the island of Lesvos.

"It is very, very small" a woman said in front of the camera, adding that she wants to go back to Moria.

Most of the migrants and asylum seekers who arrived at the monastery today were nationals of sub-Saharan African countries, including Somalia and Sudan, while others were from Iraq or other Asian nations. Only a handful were Syrian refugees.

Government seeking to change Green Line rules to halt migrant flow from north

The government is gearing up to change aspects of the 2004 Green Line Regulation to address the increased migration flows from the north, it emerged on Wednesday.

The EU regulation sets out the terms under which persons and goods can cross the Green Line between the two sides.

The issue was discussed at the House institution committee in the presence of Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides and the police leadership.

Speaking after the meeting, Petrides said he had the opportunity to explain to deputies the measures being taken to better control migration. But, he said two thirds of migrants coming in were crossing from the north.

"We need to improve the procedures, whether they are judicial, or involve expulsion and return," he said.

The committee heard that the main problem was with the arrival of irregular migrants from Africa, and especially from countries such as Cameroon and Nigeria, who arrive by air in the north from Ankara.

2,152 New Migrants Arrive on Greek Shores in First Two Weeks of November

An additional 2,152 migrants and refugees arrived on the shores of Greece from November 1 to November 14, 2019, according to official data.

More specifically, and according to the announcement made by the North Aegean Police Directorate General, the island of Lesvos alone saw an influx of 1,425 individuals, with the island of Samos the target of 486 migrants and Chios 241.

In twelve hours alone, between 00:00 and 12:00 on Thursday, a total of 152 new refugees and migrants arrived on these three islands, with 70 on Lesvos, 42 on Samos and 40 on Chios.

Meanwhile, 347 additional migrants arrived on Thursday at the port of Piraeus as part of the government's attempt to ease the massive burden that the Eastern Aegean islands are currently facing.

At least 658 rescued in the Aegean since Friday

At least 658 migrants and refugees were rescued in 20 separate operations in the eastern Aegean between Friday morning and Monday morning, the Greek coast guard said.

In the same period, a total of 730 migrants and refugees landed on the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Farmakonisi and Kastellorizo (or Megisti) after crossing from Turkey, the coast guard said.
