Policemen detained over charges of facilitating irregular migration

Two police guards serving at the Evros border post in northeastern Greece were remanded in custody on Monday pending trial on charges of facilitating the illegal entry of undocumented migrants into Greece.

The two men, who were arrested last Thursday, were transferred to prison in the town of Grevena after appearing before a prosecutor in Alexandroupoli.

A civilian who was also arrested will appear before a prosecutor on Tuesday on charges he provided tips to the officers on the movements of migrants.

Moria police to take blood tests over tuberculosis fears

Police officers stationed at the notorious Moria refugee camp on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos have been asked to take blood tests after one their colleagues contracted an infectious disease.

Sources told Kathimerini that the victim, who has been hospitalized at a local clinic with high fever for about five days, tested positive for tuberculosis.

According to the same sources, the officer has been given a medical certificate confirming that his illness is no longer infectious. He is expected to undergo six months of medical treatment.

The Moria facility has repeatedly been described by the UN and other human rights groups as overcrowded and unfit for humans.

Ten migrants injured in Evros van crash

A van carrying 20 undocumented migrants crashed on Wednesday during an attempt by their suspected smuggler to evade arrest near the border town of Soufli in Evros.

According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the driver lost control of the vehicle after trying to do a U-turn to avoid a police inspection and plunged into a ditch.

Of the 20 migrants on board, 10 were said to have suffered minor injuries.

The fire service was summoned to remove one of the 20 migrants from the wreck of the vehicle.

They were transferred to hospitals in Didymoteicho and Alexandroupoli for medical attention, while the driver, their suspected smuggler, remained at large on Wednesday night.

Migrants Try to Burn Woman Alive in Camp, Four Men Stabbed

A violent fight occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday at the Thebes migrant camp, where a woman was attacked by four individuals who attempted to burn her alive.

Four migrants suffered knife wounds during the altercation and were hospitalized, while the woman was hospitalized with serious burns on her body. The causes of the fight remain unknown as the migrants have refused to speak to the police.

What has been reported, however, was that the men who took part in the fight were drunk and caused damages to the camp premises. It is not known why they attacked the woman.

Tensions mount in migrant camps on mainland too

Concerns are growing about pressure on migrant reception facilities on the mainland as well as the Aegean islands as transfers from the islands continue amid a steady influx from Turkey.

Last week 611 people arrived on the island while 495 people were transferred to the mainland.

According to the group Refugee Support Aegean, rising tensions on the islands have led to a spike in racist attacks.

The group cited assaults against Afghan refugees on Lesvos, extremist language used by municipal councilors on Lesvos, Chios and Samos, and protests by parents on Chios against child refugees attending schools.

Frustration is also mounting in the camps where migrants wait for months for news of their fate.

On Wednesday a group of Afghans at a facility in Thiva, apparently drunk, tried to set a female resident of the camp on fire.

Salakuljettajat otettiin kiinni kahdesta eri pakettiautosta, jossa oli yhteensä 35 laittomasti maassa olevaa.

Migrant traffickers nabbed in northern Greece

Police in the northern city of Thessaloniki have arrested a total of four traffickers, including one minor, for driving two vans carrying a total of 35 undocumented migrants.

The arrests took place Saturday afternoon but were announced Sunday.

A 17-year-old driving a van outside Thessaloniki failed to stop at a police checkpoint and, following a chase, he was arrested. He was carrying 10 migrants in his van.

Shortly afterwards police gave chase on another van moving on Egnatia Highway. They arrested the 21-year-old driver and two accomplices, a 33-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman. Inside the van were also 25 undocumented migrants.

The nationalities of the traffickers and the migrants were not made available by police.

Typically, traffickers pick up the migrants after they have crossed the Greek-Turkish land border and drive them to Thessaloniki, Athens or even a third country

Outraged Zygi residents halt work on unaccompanied minors centre

Residents of Zygi and nearby villages obstructed workers from the department of public works from conducting a record of the buildings located in an abandoned military camp in the area on Tuesday which is set to host a centre for unaccompanied children of refugees arriving in Cyprus.

The residents have been up in arms against the government's decision to house the centre in the area since August, claiming that they were not asked and expressing concern over the possibility that the migrant children will inevitably attend the local school, as well as vowing to fight the decision with all means at their disposal.

"Over our dead bodies," Zygi community leader Georgia Michail wrote on the village council's Facebook page in August. "We will close roads, we won't let anyone enter the barracks."

The latest outburst occurred at around 9am on Tuesday morning, when employees of the department of public works arrived at the Charilaou Michael military camp to record the buildings on the property and to evaluate their condition.

Once Zygi residents realised the workers were there, they arrived at the scene and began quarrelling with them, until around 40-50 local residents had gathered.

A number of locals also gathered outside the police station where the workers resolved to go following the dispute.

Syyskussa juuri juttelin yhden tutun kyproslaisen kanssa. Sanoi että aluksi oli ongelmaa, kun meriteitse tulleet sai enemmän rahaa kuin keskiverto paikallinen. Muuttivat sitten käytäntöä, että saavat vain tarvittavan avun (majoitus, ruoka yms.) ja lisäksi röökiaskin verran rahaa päivässä.. Paikalliset tykkäs kun oli humaania ja reilua. Tosin loppu tulijatkin.
Nyt pääosa tulijoista on oikeasti todella hädässä. Näyttivät semmoisen 12m huonossa kunnossa olleen veneen millä oli edellispäivänä tullut 60 turvista. Mukana muutama raskaana oleva nainen ja lapsia.

^ Herää vaan kysymys siitä, jotta missä nyt on sota ja mikä on hätä, joka tuo lapsukaiset aina Kyprokselle asti. Samoin aikuiset. Ongelma tuossa nimittäin on se, että nämä tulevat jostakin Afganistanista, Somaliasta, Eritreasta, Bangladeshistä ja Nigeriasta ja ties mistä, ja jokaisen hätä loppui jo ensimmäisessä turvallisessa maassa matkan varrella, eikä se ollut kenenkään kohdalla Kypros (kts. kartta).

Toinen ongelma on se, että jos Guatemalasta löydetään saksalainen alaikäinen lapsi, niin hänet toimitetaan takaisin Saksan viranomaisten huostaan, joiden tehtävä on etsiä lapsen vanhemmat tai pitää hänestä huoli. Paluumatka tulee takuuvarmasti vaikka kuinka sanoisi olevansa asyylia hakemassa. Mutta täällä Euroopassa asiat ovat vinksallaan (miksi?), sillä ensi toimena lapsukaisia aletaan integroimaan tänne. Mikä menee siis pieleen jo kättelyssä? Lisäksi yleisesti tunnetaan vielä tämä ankkurilapsitoiminta, jolla lapsi lähetetään tänne, jotta vanhemmat pääsisivät myöhemmin perässä. Jotkut voivat lähettää myös "ylijäämälapsensa" pois, jotta nämä voisivat sitten lähetellä heille rahaa.

Systeemi on aivan läpimätä ja sitä käytetään yleisesti ja röyhkeästi laittoman maahanmuuton väylänä. Moni eurooppalainen on sotkeutunut täysin häikäilemättä myös tuohon toimintaan (kts. kaarnalaivamieht). Osa saa jopa koko elantonsa tuosta.

Zygissä on ollut sattumus. Lyhyttä referaattia jutusta:

Sattumus tapahtui Zygin asukkaiden ja julkisten töiden osaston työntekijöiden välillä tänä aamuna. Työntekijät olivat pyrkineet huoltotöihin paikkakunnan entiselle sotilasleirialueelle, josta on tarkoitus tehdä alaikäisvokki.

Alustavien tietojen mukaan Zygin asukkaat lähestyivät paikkaa agressiivisina ja he pakottivat työntekijät poistumaan. Paniikki iski työntekijöihin ja he pakenivat Zygin poliisiasemalle.

Zygin ja Larnacan välinen tie on suljettu kaikilta ajoneuvoilta.

Vahva poliisijoukko on sotilasleirissä ja sadat kunnan asukkaat piirittävät heitä. Samoin asukkaat piirittävät Zygin poliisilaitosta, jonne huoltotyöntekijät piiloutuivat.

Aluksi julkisten töiden osaston työntekijöiden kimppuun hyökkäsi 20 henkilöä. Työntekijä pysyivät leirissä jonkin aikaan, koska asukkaat olivat tukkineet reitit ympäristöön. Vähitellen vihaisten ihmisten määrä nousi 50 henkilöön ja silloin työntekijät pakenivat poliisiasemalle.

Julkisten töiden osasto on ilmoittanut, että tänään ei alueella tehdä töitä.

Kyproksella tarvitaan taas jälleen kerran suomalaisia rauhanturvaajia? Zygin asukkaat eivät olletkaan ihastuneita "alaikäisten" vokin rakentamishankkesta, miksikähän ei? Ihaniä "käkkäräpäitä" suomitätien mukaanhan sinne olisi tullut täysihoitoon toipumaan sodasta, nälästä ja ennenkaikkea lännen kultamaan kaipuusta.

Nämä ihmissalakuljettajien takaa-ajot alkavat olla Pohjois-Kreikassa lähes jokapäiväisiä.

Poliisi otti tänään kiinni epäillyn jordanialaisen ihmissalakuljettajan ja kuusi syyrialaista matua Thessalonikin ja Kavalan välisellä tieosuudella takaa-ajon jälkeen.

Suspected migrant smuggler nabbed after car chase

Police in northern Greece on Tuesday detained a 24-year-old suspected smuggler and six Syrian refugees following a car chase on the Thessaloniki-Kavala national highway.

The 24-year-old, a Jordanian national, failed to stop at a signal by police in the area of Volvi, prompting officers to give chase.

A second patrol car was dispatched to join the chase and the smuggler was eventually cornered. According to the testimonies given to police by the six refugees, among whom were two minors, they had crossed into Greece from Turkey via the Evros border region and had been bound for Thessaloniki.

Tuesday's car chase was the latest in a series of similar incidents near the Turkish border in recent weeks as authorities seek to crack down on in increase in irregular migration over the land border.

New group of refugees lands in Limnitis

A new group of Syrian refugees who arrived on the beach at Limnitis on Wednesday morning were transferred later in the day to the Kokkinotrimithia reception centre.

After verifying their details at the Polis Chyrochous police station, they were transferred by bus to the Kokkinotrimithia reception centre.

According to the police, the boat with 36 Syrians on board, including one woman, first landed on the beach in Limnitis in the north.

Each person paid around €2,000 to €3,000 to be transported to the Limnitis coastal area, police announced later on Wednesday.

Community leader of Kato Pyrgos Nicos Cleanthous told the Cyprus News Agency that the coast in that area should be patrolled to put off waves of migrants and refugees arriving there.

Yk:n pakolaisjärjestö UNHCR vaatii Kreikkaa parantamaan vokkien oloja, joita kutsuvat kauheiksi. Vaativat hätätoimia, sillä talvi on tulossa.

He toivottavat tervetulleiksi suunnitelmat siirtää 6000 "hädänalaista" mantereelle, mutta mainitsevat, että saarille on viimeisen kolmen kuukauden aikana saapunut 11000  lisää.

He unohtivat mainita, että Kreikkaan tulleille "hädänalaisille" oli jo järjestetty majoitus UNHCR:n omilla leireillä Turkissa, debit-kortteineen päivineen.
Heidän pitäisi vaatia, että majoitusta tarvitsevat toimitetaan takaisin  Turkin leireille, jossa on sitä kapasiteettia. Siellä olisi myös lämpimämpää.

Mantereelle siirtäminen ei toimi, koska se kannustaa Turkissa olevia pyrkimään Kreikkaan.  On käsittämätöntä, että YK:n pakolaisjärjestö pitää sitä hyvänä ratkaisuna.

UNHCR concerned migrant camp conditions will worsen

The United Nations refugee agency on Tuesday pressed Greek authorities to take urgent action to improve conditions at migrant reception facilities on the Aegean islands, particularly on Lesvos and Samos.

Describing living conditions at the camps as "abhorrent," UNHCR spokesperson Charlie Yaxley expressed fears that they would only worsen.

"With winter approaching and more people arriving, time is of the essence and emergency measures are needed," he said. The UNHCR welcomed plans to create space for another 6,000 people in mainland camps but said the 11,000 arrivals in the last three months have "outpaced" departures.

In a related development, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic said Greece must urgently adopt long-term measures to improve the reception and integration of migrants.

Greece sees sharp surge in migrant crossings

Authorities in northern Greece have reported a sharp increase in migrant crossings at the country's land border with Turkey along with a rise in arrests of smuggling suspects.

The number of migrants registered and arrested after crossing the border was 3,543 in October, an 82 percent rise from that month the previous year, according to police data from the border region of Thrace and the northern city of Thessaloniki obtained by The Associated Press.

The number of smuggling suspects arrested also nearly doubled, from 66 in October 2017 to 110 last month.

The surge in numbers has complicated an ongoing government effort to reduce overcrowding at migrant camps on Lesbos and other Greek islands by moving more asylum seekers to the mainland

Zygi accused of racism over young migrant centre protest

The Pancyprian Peace Council (PPC) condemned on Friday what it described as the outbreak of racism and xenophobia displayed by Zygi residents opposed to the creation of a state facility for uaccompanied minors on an empty military camp in the area.

The negative attitudes it said were "the result of failed refugee policies of the European Union, but also of the Anastasiades administration which follows its instructions blindly."

Earlier in the week the residents of Zygi and nearby villages obstructed workers from the department of public works from surveying buildings located in the former military camp.

On Thursday, a Zygi community council meeting attended by villagers in the area approved a memo asking that all works concerning the creation of the centre stop immediately, until a relevant study, already commissioned by the government is completed.

In contrast to the reaction of Zygi residents, the community leader of Vasa Kellakiou, Pantelis Georgiou, said earlier this week that his village would be willing to host the centre. Georgiou told Kanali 6 radio that he was surprised that Zygi, that has hosted many refugees since 1974, was not willing to take in these children.

In its statement, the PPC said Zygi's reaction with the backing of far-right Elam, was "unacceptable and promotes racism and xenophobia". It also called on members of the public to support refugees.

Greece arrests 2 migrant traffickers

Police nabbed the suspects, 23 and 26, on Friday as they carried nine migrants from Pakistan and one from Bangladesh, across a river separating Greece and Turkey. The two suspects had just landed their small boat on the Greek side.

Across the river, about 80 migrants were waiting to be transported by the same boat.

Police said Saturday the traffickers were operating out of Turkey and were previously unknown to them.

Stricter checks at airports curbing illegal migration inside EU

Efforts to crack down on illegal immigration from Greece to other member-states in Europe's Schengen passport-free travel zone are paying off, sources in the Greek Police (ELAS) have told Kathimerini, noting that 5,633 undocumented migrants were arrested at the country's 25 airports from January through October this year – a figure which is more than double the 2,445 arrests made in 2017.

ELAS's increased measures were introduced in response to a decision by German authorities in November last year to conduct much stricter checks on passengers arriving into the country from Greece in a bid to root out travelers using false papers after a reported spike in such incidents.

Veneessä oli 15 matkustajaa, joista kolme saatiin pelastettua merestä ja kaksi ui takaisin rantaan. Viisi henkilöä on vielä kateissa. Etsinnät jatkuvat yhä.

Kaikki matkustajat yhtä iranilaista lukuunottamatta olivat Afganistanin kansalaisia.

Death toll rises to five in migrant boat sinking off Turkey

Five people, including three children, died after a boat carrying 15 migrants sank off the coast of western Turkey on Monday, the Turkish coast guard said.

It said five others were missing and a search was underway.

The coast guard said it had plucked three people from the sea with the help of local fishing boats after the vessel with the refugees aboard went down off the coast of the western province of Izmir. Two other people swam to shore, it added.

One Iranian and 14 Afghan nationals were on the boat before it sank, the coast guard said, adding that search operations for the five missing people were continuing.

One dead, nine injured in migrant smuggling minivan crash

A woman was killed and nine people were injured in northern Greece on Tuesday when the minivan they were traveling in veered off course and crashed on a side road of the Egnatia Odos highway near Analipsi.

There were no details concerning the identity of the dead woman, who was pulled out from the vehicle's wreckage, though authorities believe that all the passengers were undocumented migrants who were smuggled into Greece from Turkey across the Evros border.

The past few months have seen a spike in such incidents amid a surge in migrant inflows across Greece's northeastern land border with Turkey.

Just last week, a 4-year-old boy died in a similar crash on the national highway between Katerini and Thessaloniki.

Greek police beat migrants at border, send them back to Turkey naked, locals say

A group of migrants was discovered by villagers in Turkey's northwestern Edirne province in a run-down and naked state, saying that they were beaten up and stripped of their clothes and belongings by the Greek police.

The migrants including Yemeni and Palestinian nationals were found late Monday while walking in open fields by locals of Kiremitçi Salih village in Uzunköprü district on the eastern bank of the Maritsa River forming the border between Turkey and Greece.

The villagers brought the migrants to the village's coffeehouse, provided them with clothes and notified local gendarmerie units.

Village headman Zeki Ateş told the Demirören News Agency that all migrants had visible signs of battery on their backs and all over their bodies.

"When we asked them what happened, they told us that the Greek police beat them up," Ateş said.

He said that the migrants were taken away by gendarmerie units.

The incident was the latest string of events involving migrants and Greek and Bulgarian soldiers and police officers, who have been accused of "pushing back" migrants on the border.

Two men were being treated for stab injuries on Tuesday after being involved in a brawl between several migrants at the western port city of Patra in the early hours.

Police reported breaking up a violent fight on the coastal road of Akti Dimaion, where hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers are squatting in disused factories as they try to sneak onto ferryboats bound for Italy.

Eighteen people in hospital from latest migrant van crash

Greek authorities say 18 people were hospitalized after the latest in a string of often fatal road accidents involving vehicles smuggling migrants through northern Greece.

Police say a van driven by a suspected migrant smuggler and crammed with another 46 people veered off a road and crashed near the northeastern town of Didymoteicho overnight Wednesday.

Police say the migrants, who included several children, were Syrians, Iraqis and Palestinians.

Dental checks on child migrants show more than half were adults

Over half of more than 100 asylum seekers claiming to be unaccompanied minors who have been tested, were found to be adults after dental checks were carried out, it emerged on Friday.

A special team has been set up at the state dental services tasked with identifying a person's age with X-rays, the health ministry announced.

The dental services have been, since 2015, cooperating with state services as to the identification of the age of applicants for asylum who claim they are minors.

The project is co-funded, 90 per cent by the Asylum, Immigration and Integration Fund of the EU and 10 per cent by the Republic of Cyprus.

According to data from the interior ministry, 56 per cent of 105 people claiming to be minors were found to be adults after their details were checked. In total, 176 people filed as unaccompanied minors last year.

The interior ministry had said last month that a new, speedy procedure was to be introduced by the government for verifying the age of people claiming to be unaccompanied minors.

The government stepped up measures concerning this matter, as many asylum seekers who have claimed to be unaccompanied minors, are hosted in shelters for children until their age is verified.

This, the ministry said, interrupts the smooth operation of these facilities, especially on issues concerning the safety of unaccompanied children hosted there.

Two injured in brawl in northern Greece migrant camp

Two men were in hospital on Tuesday after being injured in a brawl at a state-run migrant center in northern Greece.

Doctors at Thessaloniki's Ippokratio Hospital said that the two men, identified only as Iraqi and Iranian nationals, had been stabbed with a sharp implement but their condition was not considered serious.

The brawl erupted at around 11.30 on Monday night at the camp in the former Anagnostopoulos military base in the area of Diavata, where the population has swelled in recent months due to a spike in arrivals across Greece's land border with Turkey.

Fights are not uncommon at Greece's migrant and refugee camps, where population numbers tend to be far above their initial capacity and resources are limited.

Syrian refugees dropped off in Cyprus

A new boatload of Syrian refugees arrived in the Republic of Cyprus Wednesday, with 47 people dropped off at Tylliria in the early hours.

According to Kathimerini Cyprus, 47 refugees including a pregnant woman and one teenager, reached Cypriot shores in the north-western part of the island by boat, after starting the last leg of their trip from the Turkish coast.

Coast Guard officials rushed to the area while the vessel that transported them had already turned back and disappeared.

Lesboksen saarella on nyt Morian leirissä 5 860 läpsyä ja Kara Tepen leirissä 1 140. Luvut ovat pienentyneet, koska näitä on siirretty mantereen puolelle melko suuria määriä ja Turkista tulleiden määräkin on kuulemma vähentynyt.

Lisäksi Khioksen saarella on 1 370 ja Samoksella 4 800 läpsyttelijää tällä hetkellä.

Olisikohan sitten niin, että yhä useampi yrittää nyt Turkista maarajan kautta suoraan Pohjois-Kreikkaan veneilyn sijaan, koska noita on jäänyt siellä päin aika paljon kiinni.

Number of asylum seekers in Moria drops below 6,000

The number of migrants waiting for their asylum application to be processed in the notorious reception and processing center in Moria, Lesvos, dropped below 6,000, based on data from the Migration Policy Ministry on Thursday.

As of today, 7,850 people remained on Lesvos, of which 5,860 people were living in Moria and 1,140 in the Kara Tepe camp, as a result of the transfer of a large number of vulnerable refugees to the mainland in the past month and a drop in arrivals from Turkey.

Police, coast guard break large migrant trafficking ring

The Greek Police and the coast guard have broken a criminal racket believed to have been smuggling undocumented migrants from the northern region of Evros to Attica and then onwards to Italy, it emerged on Monday.

According to sources, the ring would smuggle the migrants into Greece via the Turkish land border before transporting them down to Laconia in the Peloponnese where they would be put on boats to Italy.

Three suspected racket members were detained while the alleged ring leader is reportedly a Syrian national who has secured asylum in Greece and has been charged with migrant trafficking in the past.

Four migrants killed by a train in northern Greece may have been sleeping on the tracks when they were hit, authorities said Wednesday.

The victims were two men and two women aged 30-35, coroner Nikos Kifnidis told The Associated Press. He said they were lying down when the train hit and dismembered them, dragging their bodies for about 200 meters (yards).

Blankets were found by the lines at the point of impact, suggesting that the migrants had wrapped up for sleep.

|There has also been a rise in fatal road crashes involving migrants in northeastern Greece.

Police said Wednesday that a Syrian man was killed overnight and six more people injured when a car used by a smuggling gang that was crammed with nine people crashed on a northern highway near the town of Kavala.

A Syrian man and an Egyptian teenager were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking. The passengers were described as Syrian, Egyptian and Somali nationals.
