Antwerp Federation of Moroccan Associations, plans to open a school Moroccan Borgerhout district of Antwerp in Belgium, for the start of 2013.
Iqra, kindergarten and first grade, could accommodate only 64 students and is open to children of Moroccan origin. Students will have two hours per week of religion, Islam in the first place, and will be taught in Dutch.
"We see a lot of young people from migration, perform poorly in school," said Mohamed Chakkar, head of the federation Gazet van Antwerpen. "Existing schools do not have a solution, that is why we take the initiative ourselves." According Chakkar, it will not mean a Muslim school, because the school has an open and plural.
A case has been filed for the opening of the Iqra from the Flemish authorities, but the Moroccan school is not alone in wanting to get the site where the facility should be installed.
A decision is expected by the authorities in November. The school, if the project is approved, will cost 800,000 euros, part of which will be subsidized by the Belgian State.
