Title: 2010-04-28 UK: Gordon Brown solvasi maahanmuutosta tiedustellutta äänestäjää

Pääministeri kritisoi vahingossa julkisesti naista kampanjakiertueellaan Rochdalessa. Nainen oli juuri puhunut Brownin kanssa eläkkeistä ja maahanmuutosta.

Kun avustaja kysyi, mistä he olivat keskustelleet Brown vastasi:

- Hän oli vain kiihkoileva nainen.

Nainen tiedusteli Brownilta itäeurooppalaisten siirtolaisten määrää Britanniassa.

Brown myönsi ettei hän tiennyt tv-mikrofonin olevan päällä.

Brown pyysi Duffyltä myöhemmin anteeksi. Nainen ilmoitti kuitenkin, ettei aio äänestää työväenpuoluetta toukokuun 6. päivän vaaleissa.

Gordon Brown pyysi anteeksi ja selittaa lausahdustaan nain:
Quote'I am mortified by what has happened. I have given her my sincere apologies. I misunderstood what she said. She has accepted that there was a misunderstanding and she has accepted my apology,' he said.

'If you like, I am a penitent sinner. Sometimes you say things that you don't mean to say, sometimes you say things by mistake and sometimes when you say things you want to correct it very quickly.

QuoteImmigration has fuelled legitimate concerns among voters

Gordon Brown has been forced to apologise for calling Gillian Duffy, a Labour supporter, a "bigoted woman" after she confronted him on immigration.

Here is what they said and the issues behind the comments.

Gillian Duffy: You can't say anything about the immigrants because you're saying that you're ... but all these eastern Europeans what are coming in, where are they flocking from?

The sensitive topic of immigration has never been far away during the election campaign but politicians have been accused of only wanting to address it when it's raised on the doorsteps while being less vocal at a national level.

Mrs Duffy's concerns centre on the impact on communities such as Rochdale from the huge rise in immigration in recent years that has been driven by migrants from the former Eastern European nations that joined the EU in 2004.

Labour gave full access to the jobs market for the so-called A8 countries, including Poland and Lithuania, and the huge influx that resulted has left local authorities swamped, resources stretched and claims that British workers are losing out on both work and low wages.

Dismissing such legitimate concerns as "bigotry" will only serve to infuriate those voters who have experienced such pressure first hand.

Gordon Brown: A million people have come from Europe but a million British people have gone into Europe. You do know that there's a lot of British people staying in Europe as well.

By the end of 2009, Home Office figures showed a total of 1,041,315 workers from Eastern Europe had registered to come and work in the UK.

But that is only part of the picture as those figures do not include self-employed or those who do not bother to register.

That influx has been somewhat offset by record levels of emigration, especially among Britons moving abroad, but there continues to be a net immigration – more people arriving in the UK than leaving.

In 2008, the most recent statistics available, some 163,000 more people moved to the UK than left.

The claim of Britons moving to the Continent is based on a report in 2006 by the Institute for Public Policy Research which suggested more than a million Britons were currently living in other European countries.

White flight?

Sehän on sitä hyysäreiden yleisjargonia vrt. suomalaisittain: ovathan suomalaisetkin muuttaneet muualle.
Niillä on taatusti jokin yleiseurooppalainen punainen kirja, jossa on vastausohjeet kaikkiin maahanmuuttokriittisiin kommentteihin.
