Title: 2009-09-01 Tanska: Vanhemmat pitävät lapsiaan laittomasti ulkomailla

QuoteOf the 81 Danish children being held abroad after being taken by one of their parents, 73 are being held in countries that don't have to return them.

JydskeVestkysten newspaper reports that 73 Danish children are being held in countries that have not signed the Hague Convention on parental jurisdiction. These countries, such as Syria, Lebanon and Somalia, are not obliged to return children who have been illegally brought there.

The 73 cases currently being handled compares with 42 in 2007.
Department of Family Affairs representative Mariam Khalil said the children were typically taken out of the country in situations where the parents had separated and one of them took the child back to their home country.

Jette Samuel Jeppesen, of the Foreign Ministry, said about half of the cases culminated in the child being returned to Denmark within a year, 'but it can also drag out a long time'.

Jeppesen said because Danish laws meant nothing in countries that hadn't signed the Hague Convention, the ministry's strategy was to mediate between the parents and explain that a serious crime was being committed.

Apart from the 73 children, eight other children are being held in countries that are covered by the Hague Convention. The Department of Family Affairs has requested that the foreign authorities of those countries return the children, which should take place within six weeks, according to the convention.

Mukavanoloisia maita mainittu!
