Who cares?  Let the white people enjoy their final few decades doing goofy white people stuff like Birding or Tiddly-Winks. 
The real question is why Nat Geo published this article.  Are they worried that outdoor stuff is boring to most colored folks and their magazine and Society are going to go bankrupt? 
Birding doesn't "need" diversity any more than the National Thimble Collectors Association "needs" diversity or NASCAR "needs" diversity.  But, let's face it, Nat Geo "needs" diversity to keep their magazine and their jobs.
If you like it, then do it.  If you don't like it then don't do it. Who cares?
I suspect there is another, motivation, however: the subterranean existential dread that white folks are feeling. Their numbers are shrinking. Their cultures are dying and being swept away.  They are desperately trying to preserve a few remnants as their legacy. 
Having aborted all their babies and sent all their women off to work, they have no one left to carry on, so they are trying to dragoon little black and Mexican kids into sharing their goofy white pleasures.  But this prospect is so frightening they cannot even think it to themselves, so it leaks out in weird ways like articles about the "need" for Diversity.
Please, white people, just die and stop bothering us. Let us enjoy the things we enjoy.

Eipä ole tornilla neekereitä näkynyt täälläkään.
Ovat kait parempaa tekemistä he keksineet. Ei näy marjassakaan sen puoleen.

Nuorison ketaleet kyllä vandalisoineet tornia, luulisi hauskempaa olevan katsella lintuja kuin sotata toisten tekemää tornia. Talkoilla kuulemma olivat rakentaneet. Kotimaisia varmastikin kun lähettyvillä ei neekeriasutusta olekaan.

Ei niitä sottaajia vielä jokin kolkyt vuotta sitten ollut. Eikä ollut joka kaupassa vartijoita, nykyisin on työkkärissä ja soppalassakin. Eikä mopopoikia baareissa. Kehnompaan suuntaan on muuttunut.

Oikeastaan tämä on varsin kiinnostava aihe. Jo pitkään on USA:ssa ihmetelty miksei etniset vähemmistöt (afrot) liiku luonnossa.
Heitä ei näy kansallispuistoissa vaeltamassa, ei juurikaan metsästämässä tai muuten viettämässä vapaa-aikaa luonnon helmassa.

On hyvä muistaa, että metsä on ollut aina suomalaisen tuki ja turvapaikka. Pätee myös monikulttuurilta pakenemiseen. Kuinka moni varsinainen harrastaa kesämökkeilyä, metsästystä tai vaellusta?
