Kanadan Edmontonissa mies ajoi poliisiautoa päin, puukotti poliisia useasti ja ajoi myöhemmin paetessaan jalankulkijoiden päälle varastamallaan pakulla osuen neljään henkilöön. Autosta löytyi ISIS-lippu. Tapahtumaa tutkitaan terrorismina.

Tekijä on ilmeisesti saatu kiinni.

QuoteEdmonton terror attack: Police stabbed before pedestrians hit by van - ISIS flag found

Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said the incidents are being investigated "as an act of terror".

The top officer revealed an ISIS flag was discovered in the car used by the attacker.

Revealing details of the manhunt, the officer said the first incident involved an attack on an officer at the city's Commonwealth Stadium.

A van was driven into an officer who was then stabbed, before the attacker fled.

The driver was later stopped in Jasper Avenue where a chase ensued.

He drove along a busy road, speeding towards revellers.

Four were hit.

"There were people flying and everything," witness Kim Anderson said.

"I'm shocked — I just see people flying."

Officers rushed in to set up road blocks as they hunted the fleeing suspect.

The public has been warned to avoid the area.

Police spokesman Scott Pattison said: "The officer was approached by an unknown male suspect in a vehicle, at which time the suspect rammed the police cruiser.

"The suspect got out of his vehicle and an altercation ensued.

"The officer sustained some injuries, he's in hospital, and thankfully he's doing OK."

QuoteEdmonton police stabbing, truck rampage being investigated as acts of terrorism

A Edmonton police officer was stabbed Saturday evening near Commonwealth Stadium and four pedestrians injured by a fleeing truck in what police are investigating as an act of terrorism.

Scene 1: 93 Street and 107A Avenue

The first attack happened when an Edmonton Police Service special duty member was stabbed by a man who had crashed a car into a police barricade outside the stadium, where the Edmonton Eskimos were hosting Winnipeg on Canadian Forces Appreciation Night.

Police chief Rod Knecht confirmed in a 3 a.m. news conference that there was an ISIS flag in the car. Below is a photo of what the flag looks like.

Police said the officer was manning a traffic checkpoint near 93 Street and 107A Avenue when it happened at around 8:15 p.m.

Police said the suspect fled on foot after ramming a police vehicle and was still at large. A white Chevrolet Malibu could be seen smashed into the front of an Edmonton Police Service SUV.

"The officer was approached by an unknown male suspect in a vehicle at which time the suspect rammed the police cruiser," said Edmonton Police Service spokesman Scott Pattison.

"The suspect then got out of the vehicle and approached the officer and an altercation ensued."

Reporter Laurel Gregory was just wrapping up a live report at the end of Global Edmonton's News at 11 when a police officer shouted out a warning: "Get behind a tree. Or a car. This is for your own protection!"

Following the stabbing of the police officer, a suspect fled on foot, prompting a massive manhunt. Approximately two hours later — around 11:30 p.m. — a U-Haul van was seen speeding through downtown streets with up to a dozen police vehicles in pursuit.

Scene 2: 109 Street north of Jasper Avenue

The alley next to The Pint, a bar on 109th Street just north of Jasper Avenue, was blocked off by police and yellow crime-scene tape. As many as 10 cruisers crowded the area.

A manager at The Pint said the U-Haul came speeding down 109th Street and careened east into the alley next to the bar, hitting two people. It happened so fast, no one even screamed.

One man was just clipped by the van, said the manager — who didn't want to give his name — but he was told a second man was hit harder.

The first man was sitting up within about five minutes. A bartender who is also a nurse came out to look after one of the men.

There were a lot of people in the alley so it was fortunate only two were hit, the manager said. The bar's security cameras didn't pick up anything, he added.

(...)

Scene 3: 106 Street and 100 Avenue

At 107 Street and Jasper Avenue, someone was seen being loaded into an ambulance.

The U-Haul ended up on its side on 106 Street, between Jasper Avenue and 100 Avenue.

The incidents bore striking similarities to recent terror attacks in Europe, and Edmonton Police said they are being investigated as terrorism.

QuoteMies ajoi Kanadassa päin poliisiautoa ja puukotti poliisia - varasti sitten pakettiauton ja ajoi väkijoukkoon

Viranomaiset tutkivat tapausta terrori-iskuna.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/man-arrested-connection-edmonton-terror-11272396 (1.10.2017)

QuoteMan arrested in connection with Edmonton terror attack after knifeman drove into officer is named

Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 30, from Somalia, was detained by cops as Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale announced the suspect was on a 'police watch list'

A man arrested in connection with a terror attack in Canada after a knifeman ploughed into an officer at high speed before repeatedly stabbing him has been named.

Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 30, of Somalian origin, has been detained by police.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said in a news conference on Sunday that the suspect, who is in police custody, was on a "police watch list".

Goodale said the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team was working closely with Edmonton police on the investigation.

"The individual had apparently some appearance on a police watch list, but that is a detail of the investigation that the authorities will pursue in the appropriate way," Goodale said.

"There are no conclusions that can be drawn at the current time."

Terrifying CCTV released by cops earlier today showed a police officer flying 15ft into the air after a driver smashed through a blockade and careered into a patrol car in Edmonton.

In the footage, the knifeman can then be seen jumping out of his vehicle and running over to the injured officer where he stabs him "multiple" times.

Miraculously, police say the victim's injuries are "not serious".

Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht said: "The vehicle struck the officer, sending him flying into the air 15ft, before colliding with the officer's cruiser, again at a high rate of speed."

Just two hours later, police investigating the attack pulled over a truck.

Its driver fled when his name was recognised as the owner of the vehicle used in the initial incident, according to local media.

Police described how the truck deliberately tried to hit pedestrians on the pavement during the police pursuit, leaving at least four injured.

At a press conference, police said they were treating the two incidents as "acts of terror" and said that while they believed the attacker "acted alone" they were not ruling out that others may have been involved.

Police have also confirmed an ISIS flag was seen in the suspect's vehicle - photos of which were taken by local media at the scene.

Knecht said: "Throughout the chase, the truck deliberately attempted to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and in alleys in two areas along Jasper Avenue.

"It is believed at this time that these two incidents are related, based on evidence at the scenes, and actions of the suspect, at 12:38 a.m. today, it was determined that these incidents are being investigated as acts of terrorism."

The driver was apprehended and is in custody.

Quote'He was trying to kill them': Crown opens case against accused in attacks on police officer, pedestrians

A trial began Wednesday for the man accused of using a car, a U-Haul truck and a knife in attacks on multiple people including an Edmonton police officer.

On Sept. 30, 2017, EPS Const. Mike Chernyk was hit by a car while manning a barricade outside an Edmonton Eskimos Game. Shortly after, he was stabbed multiple times.

Later that night, police chased a U-Haul truck through the downtown area. The truck hit and seriously injured four people. They, and Const. Chernyk, all survived.

Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, now 32, was pulled from the truck and arrested. He faces 11 charges, including five counts of attempted murder.

In her opening statement, Crown Prosecutor Elizabeth Wheaton told the jury, "he drove into these people intentionally because he was trying to kill them."

^ Kyseinen somppu eli Abdulahi Hasan Sharif todettiin syylliseksi 11 eri syytekohtaan, mm. viisi murhan yritystä.

Vaikka Sharifin autosta löytyi ISIS-lippu, ei tapausta kuitenkaan tutkittu terrorismina.

Oikeudessa tarvittiin somalin kielen tulkkia. Tuomio luetaan 12.-13. joulukuuta.

QuoteSharif found guilty of attempted murder in police, pedestrian attack

A jury found Abdulahi Hasan Sharif guilty Friday on all charges, including five counts of attempted murder, after a three-week trial that was in part defined by what wasn't before the jury.

Sharif sat in the prisoner box and did not react as the jury delivered its verdict after 10 hours of deliberation that began Thursday.

The 32-year-old was accused of ramming Const. Mike Chernyk with a car, stabbing him and later leading police on a high-speed pursuit through downtown Edmonton in a U-Haul truck. The truck collided with four pedestrians during the chase, all of whom survived.

Sharif was convicted of all 11 charges, which also included aggravated assault, dangerous driving and flight from a police officer causing bodily harm.

After police found an ISIS flag in the car used to strike Chernyk, then-Edmonton city police chief Rod Knecht said they were investigating the incidents as "acts of terrorism." The detail made international news. However, the Crown never brought any terrorism-related charges, and the word "terrorism" was never uttered in front of the jury.

The Crown argued Sharif had intended to cause as much "chaos, destruction and indiscriminate death as possible" that night, without elaborating on motive. An amicus lawyer presenting another theory of the case, Greg Lazin, suggested Sharif might have simply been trying to flee police in the U-Haul.

(...)

The story begins near Commonwealth Stadium on Sept. 30, 2017, where Chernyk was manning a game-day traffic post.

Just after 8 p.m., he heard an engine rev and saw headlights. He dove to his left but it was too late. Chernyk flew through the air, landing on his back a few feet away, near the parking lot of a Crown Liquor at 92 Street and 107A Avenue.

Two dog walkers ran to the downed officer's aid. They assumed the driver had accidentally hit Chernyk. They were a few feet away when Jacob Prince saw the driver emerge from the white Chevy Malibu. The driver had a knife.

The armed man, who the jury later determined was Sharif, fell upon Chernyk, stabbing first his protected chest and then his head. He eventually changed tactics, reaching for the officer's gun with his free hand. Chernyk fought back, gained the advantage, and pushed the man off. The assailant ran north down 92 Street. Chernyk pulled his gun but didn't have a clear shot. He didn't follow for fear he'd pass out.

(...)

Sharif's non-participation wasn't the only unique aspect of the trial. The entire proceedings were translated into Somali by an interpreter, with each witness asked to speak in short sentences to allow time for translation.

Sentencing will take place Dec. 12 and 13.

QuoteEdmonton man gets 28 years in prison for attempted murder of policeman, pedestrians

The verdict concludes a case that featured one of the largest police investigations in Edmonton's history, and one of its stranger trials

A man who tried to kill an Edmonton police officer and four civilians on a chaotic night two years ago has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Abdulahi Sharif, 32, showed no emotion Friday afternoon as Justice Paul Belzil delivered his verdict.

"Although no sentence can repair the terrible harm done, hopefully the conclusion of this case will allow those impacted to have some measure of closure," Belzil said.

Belzil said Sharif's actions had to be denounced "in the strongest of terms." He said Sharif targeted Const. Mike Chernyk because Chernyk was a police officer, adding Sharif has shown no remorse nor "any insight into the terrible harm he has caused."

Belzil's verdict concludes a case that featured one of the largest police investigations in Edmonton's history, and one of its stranger trials.

Many questions remain unanswered. Why did Sharif do what he did? Why did he choose to fire his defence lawyers, and offer no defence at trial? And why did investigators choose not to lay terrorism charges, despite the presence of an ISIS flag in Sharif's car?

(...)

Sharif kept almost totally silent during the trial. He fired his defence lawyers during pretrial proceedings, opting instead to represent himself. Despite that, he never mounted any kind of defence. After each witness, Belzil asked Sharif a painstaking list of questions and offered topics on which he might cross-examine.

Sharif's response, given through an interpreter, was always the same: "maya" — the Somali word for "no."

(...)

Sharif grew up in Somalia during a time of war and instability. Sharif's romantic partner told Postmedia he was twice captured and nearly killed by al-Shabab, the Somali Islamist group.

Sharif fled to neighbouring Kenya in October 2008. He spent the next few years there and appears to have made an unsuccessful refugee claim.

In early 2011, Sharif left for South America. He travelled north, arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego on July 11, 2011. After spending several months in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, an immigration judge ordered Sharif deported to Somalia. However, ICE was forced to release Sharif after it became clear he couldn't be deported in the near future.

After his release, Sharif travelled across the United States to the New York-Ontario border. On Jan. 1, 2012, Sharif appeared at the Fort Erie port of entry and claimed refugee status. Lazin said Sharif provided the name of a niece who lived in Canada as an "anchor" relative under the Safe Third Country Agreement.

That agreement typically requires a refugee claimant to apply for refugee status in either Canada or the U.S., depending on which country they arrive in first.

Sharif was issued work permits a few months after arriving. The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada granted him convention refugee status on Nov. 29, 2012. Sharif eventually made his way to Alberta, where he found work as a labourer. His tax returns show income from temp agencies and from several different companies that perform asbestos removal.

Sharif applied for Canadian permanent residency twice but never completed his applications, Lazin said. He will likely face deportation on the completion of his sentence.
