2014-05-07 YLE seuraa Etelä-Afrikan vaaleja: Eri rotua, yhteiset toiveet

Eteläafrikkalaiset äänestävät parhaillaan maalleen uutta parlamenttia. Ihmiset ovat jonottaneet äänestämään jo hyvissä ajoin ennen vaalihuoneistojen avautumista. Yle Uutisten toimittaja Liisa Karvinen seuraa vaaleja paikan päällä

Ilmassa on vielä aamu-utua, kun saavumme puoli seitsemän aikaan kuoppaisen kadun varrelle, äänestyspaikan ulkopuolelle. Olemme Alexandrassa, yhdessä Johannesburgin köyhistä mustien asuinalueista. Osa taloista on pelkkiä peltihökkeleitä, osassa sentään on tiiliseinät ja kunnon katto.

Kadun varressa kiemurtelee sadan metrin mittainen jono. Ensimmäiset ovat tulleet paikalle jo aamuneljän aikaan odottelemaan, että vaalihuoneistot avautuvat seitsemältä. Ihmiset toki haluavat antaa äänensä, mutta varhaiselle tulolle on myös käytännönläheisempi syy.

– Haluan äänestää aikaisin, niin loppupäivän voin tehdä mitä lystää. Tämä on tervetullut ylimääräinen vapaapäivä, kertoo Mapule Rangongo.

Hallitseva Afrikan kansalliskongressi eli ANC tulee keräämään täällä lähes kaikki äänet. Ihmisiä toki harmittaa puolueen puheenjohtajaan ja maan presidenttiin Jacob Zumaan liittyvät korruptioskandaalit, mutta kiitollisuudenvelka puolueelle on suuri.

– ANC on tehnyt niin paljon hyväksemme. Olemme vapaita ja lapsemme käyvät samaa koulua valkoisten kanssa, kertoo Paula Lebelo.

Rotu kertoo suosikkipuolueen

Siirrymme vain kymmenen kilometrin päähän valkoisten asuinalueelle. Jono paloasemana toimivalle äänestyspaikalle on yhtä pitkä – suosikkipuolue sen sijaan on tyystin toinen.

– Äänestän DA:ta eli Demokraattista allianssia. Maamme tarvitsee vahvan opposition. Ei ole hyväksi, että vain yksi puolue on hallituksessa, kertoo Daniela Rhase.

Hän on lapsena muuttanut Saksasta Etelä-Afrikkaan ja muistaa hyvin rotuerottelun ajan.

– Maamme on toki paljon parempi nyt kuin apartheidin aikaan, mutta ollaksemme oikea demokratia tarvitsemme vahvan opposition Daniela jatkaa.

Kenties hieman yllättäen, niin täällä kaupungin kalleimmalla alueella kuin aiemmin slummissakin, ihmiset toivovat samoja asioita: korruption kitkemistä ja lisää työpaikkoja. Ongelmat ovat kaikille yhteiset, ratkaisuja vain toivotaan eri puolueilta.

Zimbabwe sends poll observers to SA

Zimbabwe has reportedly sent observers to oversee South Africa's upcoming elections to be held on 7 May.

According to a Daily News report, Zimbabwean parliamentarians and senior government officials constituted the observer mission.

The 18-member mission is operating under the auspices of the SADC mission, said the report.

Zimbabwe's head of standing rules and orders committee Zanu-PF MP Daniel Shumba was leading the observer mission.

Recent reports indicated President Robert Mugabe had thrown his weight behind the ANC, saying Zimbabwe had South Africa's well being at heart.

Mugabe said the ANC should win as they were the country's revolutionary party.

Mugabe won a landslide victory in disputed elections in July last year.

EFF leader Julius Malema says he does not hate white people, and there will not be a white genocide under his rule.

"I do not hate white people. I want us to share in the countries (sic) wealth which is in the hands of the minority," he said in an online chat on social networking site Facebook on Tuesday.

"There will never be a white genocide under our rule."

Malema said South Africa was meant to be shared.

"White people are more than welcome to play a role in the EFF. SA is for them too."

Malema was responding to questions from the public for an hour on Tuesday ahead of the May 7 general election. Many of the questions remained unanswered.

Malema said the Economic Freedom Fighters were against corruption.

"All leaders found guilty of corruption will not be allowed to operate in a leadership position within the EFF," he said.

Malema himself faces fraud and corruption charges related to a R52 million contract being awarded to On-Point Engineering. The State alleged that Malema substantially benefited from the tender payment to On-Point, using it to buy a farm and a Mercedes-Benz. It claimed that Malema's Ratanang Family Trust was an indirect shareholder in On-Point. His case was due to be heard in September in the High Court in Polokwane.

In March, The Star reported that charges against four of his alleged business associates had been dismissed. Malema had made representation to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) to have the charges against him dropped. The NDPP had not yet made a decision.

Malema was also trying to settle his tax bill to avoid being barred from Parliament.

On February 10, Malema was provisionally sequestrated by the High Court in Pretoria. Malema and anyone else who did not want the order to be made final had until 10am on May 26 to give reasons as to why this should not happen.

On Tuesday, Facebooker Tommy Thomo Talana asked Malema who will lead the EFF in Parliament if the final sequestration order is granted.

EFF leader Julius Malema has sought to assure white people that genocide would not be committed if land grabbing did take place in South Africa.

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema said on Thursday he realised his supporters would be severely punished if they took land without compensation.

"We know once we take this land forcefully, they will use the economy to fight us," he said in Pretoria.

Malema was speaking outside the Theo van Wijk building at the University of South Africa (Unisa) after management denied him and his supporters access to the hall.

He told the large crowd which had gathered to listen to him that Africa was rich, while its occupants were poor.

He said the Europeans on the continent were richer than the natives.

"That has to change. If you take the land, you take everything that comes with it. You take the seed. It won't be the Indian Ocean in Africa, it will be the African ocean," he said.

He sought to assure white people that genocide would not be committed to get the land back, and said they were brothers who had a right to live in the country.

"No white men must leave their land because they are forced. You're our brothers, but we can't have greedy brothers. We want a peaceful process. Those who have taken our land must not be arrogant," he said.

'Anger is boiling'
He encouraged whites to agree to land distribution without compensation, and not to listen to the ANC as it could not guarantee their safety.

The safety of whites was in the hands of the black majority, he said.

"Anger is boiling inside. One day, people will rise and claim the land and it will not be controllable," he said.

He said the question of what the people would do with the land should not be an issue, as Africans had worked the land long before being colonised.

Whites had only brought ways of working the land faster, he added.

"We were also mining in Mapungubwe and trading with Asians long before," Malema said.

Malema criticised the university's management for denying him entry into the hall, and said he was one of its registered students and had a right to be there.

He was not scared of anyone and if the university believed he was there illegally, he should be thrown out, he said.

"There is no one in this campus who can stop me. I will never be scared to stand up for what I believe in. They must tell people the truth if I'm lying and not threaten me with death because I will never retreat."

He said the actions of university management were irresponsible.

A scuffle resulted
The cancellation was due to threats by members of the South African Students' Congress to disrupt proceedings.

Members of the two organisations insulted one another, and a scuffle resulted in Sasco members being injured. Malema encouraged his supporters to protect meetings.

"You must manhandle them if there is a need. Never behave like cowards. Protect meetings, do whatever it takes to ensure [the] meeting goes ahead," he said, speaking through a loud-hailer.

National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) Unisa chairperson Ntsako Nombelani accused the EFF of provoking members of Nehawu and Sasco.

He said he did not understand how the meeting had gone ahead following communication with Unisa management about the cancellation.

"We were told yesterday [Wednesday] that the event was cancelled because the people who invited them no longer met the bargaining threshold," he said.

Nombelani said charges would be laid against the EFF.

Unisa Student Representative Council (SRC) president Brian Mphahlele accused Malema of destabilising education and of not having the best interests of students at heart.

Sasco's Unisa chairperson Solly Nkuna said earlier only registered students would be allowed into the ZK Matthews Hall, where Malema had been expected to speak.

'Disrupt' talks
"We have vowed to disrupt any talk given by Malema," said Nkuna.

"We took a position that non-students are not going to enter or participate. We will destabilise everything until such a point that students are the only ones left inside [the hall]."

He accused university management of turning Unisa into a platform for unhappy former ANC members.

Malema, the ANC Youth League's former leader, was expelled from the party in 2012.

Nkuna said Sasco had a duty to protect the rainbow nation and would not support an organisation that wanted to forcefully grab land.

"The issue must be addressed accordingly. We can't allow our country to become like Zimbabwe," he said.

"We won't support Malema as he talks about grabbing land from the whites."

EFF supporters sang: "One Zuma, one idiot", while holding their hands above their heads to represent a showerhead.

Eikö Apartheidin aikana valkoisilla ja maan taloudella mennyt paljon paremmin?

Tietysti Apartheid oli huono järjestelmä. Apartheid-sana tarkoittaa erillisyyttä, mikä ei itsessään ole huono asia, mutta Etelä-Afrikassa sitä toteutettiin väärällä tavalla, eikä vapaaehtoisuuteen perustuen. Alun perin oikeastaan valkoiset eivät edes kuulu sinne.

Erillisyys on mielestäni luonnollinen asia ihmisten harjoitettavaksi, koska ihmisillä on yleensä taipumusta etnosentrisyyteen. Kuten esimerkiksi Jared Taylor on moneen otteeseen kertonut.

"I have repeatedly pointed out that people prefer the company of people like themselves, that this is natural and healthy, and that we should organize our society on this assumption."

Taylor has gone on to say that "people in general if left to themselves will generally sort themselves out by race," and has said that churches, schools, and neighborhoods are examples of this.

Demokraattinen Allianssi vaikuttaa moni"kulttuurisuutta" kannattavalta puolueelta.

Tietysti Apartheid oli huono järjestelmä. Apartheid-sana tarkoittaa erillisyyttä, mikä ei itsessään ole huono asia, mutta Etelä-Afrikassa sitä toteutettiin väärällä tavalla, eikä vapaaehtoisuuteen perustuen.

Mitä tarkoitat "vapaaehtoisuuteen perustumisella"? Nähdäkseni tuollaisessa tilanteessa vapaaehtoisuus ei oikein ole uskottava vaihtoehto, koska tässä asiassa on eri ryhmien intressejä, jotka ovat ristiriidassa keskenään.

Ei tuossa sanotaan, että luo, vaan täydentää. Minusta idea on ihan selvä. Koska ihmiset ovat harvemmin niin yksimielisiä, niin yleensä kovin yksimielinen edustajisto tarkoittaa, että järjestelmässä kansan tahto ei välity ylös asti oikein, eikä maa ole siten kovinkaan täydellinen demokratia. Demokratia parhaimmillaan toteuttaa kansan tahtoa huomioiden sen useat äänet, eikä vain enemmistön, koska kansan tahtokaan ei koostu pelkästä enemmistöstä.

Eikä tänne Eurooppaankaan. Periaatteessa ajattelisin kaikilla kansoilla olevan oma paikkansa maailmassa. Se on etnopluralismia. Mutta siellä missä uudisväestön palauttaminen ei ole enää realistista, niin parempi olisi harjoittaa separatismia siten, että eri etniset ryhmät hakeutuvat omille alueilleen.

Ja bantuheimot saapuivat Etelä-Afrikkaan vasta 1700-1800-luvulla. Valkoiset ovat zuluja ja swazeja "alkuperäisempiä" Etelä-Afrikan asukkaita.

Rahaa, seksiä, vapaa-aikaa, huvituksia, rakkautta, terveyttä, kauneutta, helppoutta, mukavuutta, muiden ihailua, kaunista luontoa, tilaa, turvallisuutta, ei häiriötekijöitä, pitkää ikää, lapsia, juhlia ja onnellisuutta.

Tässä emme eroa toisistamme mitenkään. Erot tulevatkin esiin siinä, miten noihin päämäärin yritetään pyrkiä ja millaisin panostuksin. Näissä onkin sitten valtavat ja sovittamattomat erot..
