The latest Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) opinion poll taken on Jan. 31 - Feb. 10 shows that Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Petro Poroshenko and Yuliia Tymoshenko still lead in the presidential race.

Zelenskyi is now even further ahead of other candidates. 26.9 percent of Ukrainians who are going to vote at the presidential elections in Ukraine intend to support Zelenskyi.

He is followed by the acting President Petro Poroshenko - 17.7 percent and Batkivschyna Party leader Yuliia Tymoshenko - 15.8 percent.

Before Russia annexed Crimea and backed separatists in east Ukraine, Moscow had a Ukrainian president who did much of what it wanted. Now, as Ukraine readies to elect a new leader, none of the main candidates look that enticing to Russia.

Viktor Yanukovich, the last Moscow-friendly Ukrainian president, was toppled by protests in 2014 and fled to Russia, and Petro Poroshenko, his successor, has put fierce opposition to Moscow at the heart of his re-election campaign.

Challenger Yulia Tymoshenko, third in the polls behind Poroshenko, calls Russia an "aggressor country." And Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a TV comedian leading the polls, says the two countries are at war and wants Ukraine to join the EU.

Meanwhile Yuriy Boyko, a former ally of ousted Russia-friendly president Yanukovich, is trailing in fourth. While he has courted voters with promises to reverse unpopular heating tariff increases, he is unlikely to win.

Part of Russia's Ukraine problem is rooted in arithmetic.

Many voters in annexed Crimea and separatist-held eastern Ukraine, an area with a combined population of around 6 million people, according to data published by the separatists, are unlikely to take part in the election as they need to undergo a special registration process on Ukraine-controlled territory.

A further 3 million Ukrainians who live and work in Russia will not be able to vote either.

Moscow's 2014 actions mean it has lost almost all influence in the parts of Ukraine it does not control, giving it few options to shape events. Kiev says Russia is using cyber efforts to try to disrupt the election to undermine its legitimacy, a charge that Moscow denies.

"Poroshenko is obviously impossible for us to deal with," said one source familiar with Kremlin thinking, who said a Poroshenko win would entrench a political stalemate between Moscow and Kiev.

Although Poroshenko was Moscow's worst case scenario, other candidates were a write-off for Russia too, the source said.

A second source close to the Kremlin agreed that a Poroshenko win was Moscow's least favoured outcome, but said other candidates, notably Tymoshenko, at least offered a faint hope that the two countries could start talking again.

The source noted Tymoshenko had experience of dealing with Russia in gas price negotiations when she was Ukrainian prime minister and might be more pragmatic.

"Occupiers can't be choosers"
Despite his poll lead, Zelenskiy, the comedian whose fresh political face appears to be seducing many Ukrainians, is seen as something of an unknown quantity by Russia.

That is in part due to his business links to Ukrainian billionaire Ihor Kolomoisky who has helped finance militia groups to fight against pro-Russian separatists.

Other aspects of Zelenskiy, from a Kremlin perspective, may be more appealing however. A statement from Zelenskiy that he thought direct talks between Russia and Kiev were inevitable to stop the war was widely picked up by Kremlin-backed media.

The two sources familiar with Kremlin thinking said a Poroshenko win would doom any prospect of a deal over eastern Ukraine, while Moscow would welcome an agreement if it protected the interests of Russian speakers there while bringing Russiafinancial and sanctions relief.

Zelenskiy and Tymoshenko might at least be open to the possibility of talks, said Mark Galeotti, a Russia expert and fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

Moscow was nurturing the hope it could return east Ukraine to Kiev, on its own terms, in return for some kind of soft recognition of Crimea, he said. Although the Ukrainian electoral line-up was not ideal for Moscow, the Kremlin would be happy with the prospect of a Zelenskiy win for that reason and therefore not be tempted to meddle in the election.

"If Poroshenko starts to make a serious revival, then this may change, but I think they are well aware of the risks of a backlash to electoral meddling," said Galeotti. "They have little reason to upset the apple cart right now."

"I think the Russians would be happier with Tymoshenko, but occupiers can't be choosers."

The political atmosphere in Ukraine and many Ukrainians' feelings about Russia mean that whoever wins will find their room for manoeuvre limited when it comes to dealing with Moscow.

Talk of talking with Russia is politically toxic in many circles.

"How can anyone talk about making agreements with Russia when our territory is occupied," said Mustafa Djemilev, a Crimean Tatar lawmaker who backs Poroshenko. "It would simply be capitulation."

He said he regarded some of the more than 40 presidential candidates as pro-Russian and warned of violent street protests if any future Ukrainian president made concessions to Moscow.

Egor Sobolev, a lawmaker from the Self Reliance political party, which describes itself as centrist, said Ukrainian politicians who had previously advocated for Russia's interests had not changed their views.

But he said they understood that voicing those views was self-defeating at a time when Kiev was still embroiled in a conflict with separatists that the United Nations estimates has killed around 13,000 people.

"The only thing that has changed is how voters think," he said. "Seventy percent of Ukrainians now believe Russia is a strategic enemy and not a friend as most people thought five years ago."

KYIV -- They patrol the streets of the Ukrainian capital in matching urban camouflage and march in lockstep through Kyiv with torches.

They attack minority groups, including Roma and LGBT people. And some of them have trained with visiting American White supremacists.

They are the ultranationalist National Militia, street vigilantes with roots in the battle-tested Azov Battalion that emerged to defend Ukraine against Russia-backed separatists but was also accused of possible war crimes and neo-Nazi sympathies.

Yet despite the controversy surrounding it, the National Militia was granted permission by the Central Election Commission to officially monitor Ukraine's presidential election on March 31.

Now the commission appears to be rethinking that decision after the group's spokesman warned that its members will take matters into their own hands and use force in instances where law enforcement "fails" to stop election fraud.

"If law enforcers turn a blind eye to outright violations and don't want to document them," spokesman Ihor Vdovin vowed on March 6, the group will follow the instructions of its commander, Ihor Mikhailenko, who wrote on Telegram, "If we need to punch someone in the face in the name of justice, we will do this without hesitation."

Presidentinvaaleihin valmistautuva Ukraina on lisännyt uusia nimiä pakotelistalle. Suomalaiset ovat tunnettuja Kremlin tukimiehinä.

Neljä Suomen kansalaista on joutunut Ukrainan pakotelistalle. Kremliä tukevasta ja myötäilevästä toiminnasta tunnetut Janus Putkonen, Johan Bäckman, Jon Hellevig ja Jarmo Ekman on asetettu Ukrainan uudelle pakotelistalle kolmeksi vuodeksi. Tieto käy ilmi Ukrainan kansallisen turvallisuus- ja puolustusneuvoston ukrainankielisestä päätösasiakirjasta.

Asia vahvistetaan Lännen Medialle Ukrainan Helsingin suurlähetystöstä.

Ukraina on määrännyt mainituille suomalaisille kolmen vuoden maahantulokiellon. Miehiä muun muassa estetään hyödyntämästä heidän Ukrainassa mahdollisesti omistamiaan kiinteistöjä ja varoja. Kielto koskee myös ukrainalaisten pankkitilien käyttämistä.

Mitä mailma olisikaan ilman Setä Samulia!
Ei anneta mitään ilmaiseksi Putinille.

Helvetin paljon parempi paikka. Ilman sitä v*tun Samuliasi Eurooppa olisi edelleen se maanosa, joka kolonisoi kehitysmaat ja piti ne kurissa. Neuvostoliittokin olisi todennäköisesti kaatunut viimeistään 1942 ilman sitä Samuliasi. Todennäköisesti maailmanlaajuista bolshevismin uhkaa ei edes olisi tullut, kun Saksa olisi voittanut 1. maailmansodan. Samulisi ansiota on myös Emma Kari, Bioska, Petturi Orpo, Kai Mykkänen.

Tässä aavistuksen putinistisessa postauksessa on enemmän järkeä kuin keskiverto amerikanihmelentsikkavideoiden katsoja voi kerralla sulattaa.  Miettikääpä tosiaan tätä hetki scenaariota, päissänne jos ei muuten.

USA ulkona WW 1.sesta -> Saksa voittaa. Erittäin todennäköisesti Elsass -Lothringen olisi osa Saksan Valtakuntaa mutta länsirajat muuten samat kuin nyt. Koko itäinen Eurooppa Suomesta Kreikkaan, sen UKRAINAN kera, olisi enemmän tai vähemmän, nopeasti tai vähän myöhemmin, Saksan sateliitteja.

Neukkula olisi ehkä syntynyt mutta Hitler ei olisi koskaan päässyt valtaan, tuskin edes kunnon töihin. Neukkulaa vastassa olisi siis ollut oikea Suur-Saksa ja enemmän tai vähemmän innokkaat sateliitit jotka kaikki olisivat kuitenkin olleet vilpittömän kommunistivastaisia.

Olisko Neukkula pysynyt pystyssä tällaisen naapurin kanssa? Olisiko Saksa pyrkinyt horjuttamaan sitä? Melko varmasti kyllä..

Entäpä länsi.. Ranskikset tietäisivät kuten nykyäänkin että turpaan tulee jos liikaa pullistelee, ehkä siis kuitenkin unohdetaan menneet ja katsotaan jonkinlaista kauppaliittoa, sama olisi tullut varmastikin mieleen myös Italialle ja Espanjalle..

Britannia, who cares.. USA, on bisnes on bisnestä.. ei olisi tainnut sieltäkään paljoa hiekkaa rattaisiin lentää. Tiedä vaikka olisivat nekin ainakin kohtuu väleissä vaikka joku Churchill olisi kuinka mölissyt ja vihannut (Saksaa).

Siis vastakkain olisi ollut 1940 ja -50 luvuilla Stalinin Neukkula ilman massiivista USA tukea ja melko yhteinen Suur - Saksan johtama Eurooppa. Neukkulan hyökkäys olisi pysähtynyt jo UKRAINASSA ja Puolassa täydelliseen tappioon ja systeemin vaihtamiseen (tynkä)Venäjäksi.

Nuoret on lähtenyt Puolaan tai Venäjälle töihin, jäljellä lähinnä vanhuksia ja radikaaleja nationalisteja. Poroshenko jotain syrjiviä kielilakeja ja ortodoksiseen kirkon itsenäistymiseen Venäjän patriarkasta liittyviä asioita saanut aikaan, jotka vaan lisää maan kahtiajakoa. Poroshenkon kannatus jotain alle 15% luokkaa. Ukraina vaikuttaa olevan astetta paskempi versio Venäjästä noin yleisesti.

39 eri ehdokasta. Zelenskyllä gallupeissa noin 25%, istuvalla presidentillä eli Porosekolla noin 15% ja Tymosenkolla noin 10%. Muille jämiä enemmän tai vähemmän.

Ei siis kovin kiinnostavat vaalit vielä, koska toinen kierros on tulossa. Kiinnostavat siinä mielessä, että kuku tai kumpi sitten pääsee haastamaan Zelenskyn.

Vilunkipeliä on ollut monessa paikassa. Joidenkin tietojen mukaan 1700 tapausta olisi ilmoitettu, sitten joku kahdeksan kerroksinen talo olisi unohdettu vaalilistasta kokonaan, Donetskissa oli auto, josta löytyi 550 äänestyslippua, Lvivssä joku äänestäjä äänesti ja kuoli äänestyspaikalle, jonkun ehdokkaan (meni ohi kuka, 39 kaikkiaan) mukaan vilppiä ei ole, Tymoshenkon mukaan taas on, Poroshenkon mukaan ei ole vilppiä, 31 tapauksesta aloitettu tutkinta ministeriön mukaan, Tymoshenko kehottaa kannattajiaan tulemaan seuraamaan ääntenlaskua, ehdokas Vilkul kertoo vilppiä olevan, jne... näitä uutisia riittää.

Joitakin huhuja on liikkunut, että Zelensky liittoutuu toisella kierroksella Tymoshenkon kannattajien kanssa, mutta Zelensky kiistää. Sitten on kaikkea sitä, kuka tukee ketäkin ja kuka ei tue ketäkin, kun kakkoskierros näyttää tulevan.

President Petro Poroshenko claims that starting from tomorrow he will begin struggle for the election for the post of President of Ukraine in the second round.

"I'm not ashamed to say - I was destined to meet in the second round with a puppet of Kolomoyskyi. We will not give a single chance to Kolomoyskyi," he said after the end of the voting in the first round.

"That is why to complete what was started, not to ruin what was done and not to waste what was hard won by people, I will start fighting tomorrow for the victory in the second round," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

The President stressed that he had a chance to continue that struggle due to the support of Ukrainians. "You, your decisive actions, good for you, have given us this opportunity. And today, I repeat, we have made a very important step towards victory," he stated.

The Head of State once again reminded that the main task for him is to further implement the program on poverty reduction and economic development of the country. "My program is actually very short. The main priority is the implementation of the program from poverty eradication to the economy of the future. Priority: economy, economy and once again economy. And you all know: if I go for something, whether it is the ratification of the Association Agreement, the Tomos, the visa-free regime or decentralization, everything will be fine for us. We will definitely achieve and definitely win," Petro Poroshenko noted and reminded that all the achievements mentioned by him had seemed inaccessible.

"Because the damage to the economy caused by the Russian aggressor was too powerful," he said.

The President stressed that, despite the fact that "someone is about to crawl to the Russian aggressor or do something else", Ukrainians and the authorities should bet on further strengthening of their state and troops.

"Friends, we face very serious challenges. Challenges to the future of the state and generations of Ukrainians. Our second road to peace lies through the further strengthening of the army and we cannot stop this process. For the army, not some kind of memorandum, is the guarantor of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of our state. And whoever doubts that, look at the state of the army 15, 10 or 5 years ago ... I felt it with my heart. And most of the people cannot imagine the challenges and impossible situations we encountered. And we cannot allow the return to those conditions," the Head of State said.

"I did it as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I want to remind everyone - it's not a joke, it's the election of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. And I will deal with it daily, just as I did over the first five years," Petro Poroshenko stressed.

LDNR Residents to Get Russian Passports

Putin has just signed a law on simplified citizenship for residents of the LDNR.

Any person with LDNR residency documents now has the right to apply for Russian citizenship, and can expect an answer within three months. Citizenship is immediately conferred upon a positive decision.

Comments:

1. Fundamentally, this is the humanitarian thing to do, as it rescues the Donbass from the state of legal limbo they have resided in since May 2014.

2. This is a much more serious step than the recognition of LDNR documents and nationalization of Ukrainian enterprises in February 2017. All steps which, in retrospect, have led up to this moment.

3. By the end of 2019, a large percentage of the LDNR's 3.7 million residents will give up their their Ukrainian citizenships and become Russian citizens. Zhuchkovsky writes that the monthly applications processing capacity of the Rostov and Voronezh offices opened to process LDNR citizenship applications sums up to 30,000 a month, so in reality the processs will go a lot slower. Moreover, siloviks and bureucrats will have priority, so it will be a few months before ordinary LDNR citizens can get processed.

This conclusively ends the "Putinsliv" theory (the idea promoted by some Russian "zradniks", such as Strelkov, that the Kremlin was preparing to cut its losses in the Donbass and withdraw its protection). In the aftermath of any putative Operation Storm, the Ukraine would now have a legal framework to mass expel its former citizens who have taken up Russian citizenship (as Croatia did to Serbs in Krajina). So allowing it to happen would now be even riskier than before in terms of political optics.

4. There is an LDNR law that fixes its borders at the frontline, so any military attempt by the Ukrainians to revise Minsk II would presumably be followed by further avalanches of Russian passports in the areas subsequently liberated.

5. Russian liberals already crying over this being a "knife in the back" in Ukraine's new "peace-orientated" President. As I pointed out, this characterization was quite unlikely to be true.

In the meantime, Poroshenko appears to be exploring options to prevent Zelensky coming to power. Ideas include dismissing the head of the Constitutional Court, which would delay his inauguration. A more promising avenue is a law to strip the President of most of his powers and transfer most of them to the Prime Minister, which was submitted to the Rada soon after the first round of the elections (i.e. when Poroshenko must have realized he was toast).

No eiköhän kyse ole vaan siitä, että Zelensky ja vaimonsa ovat kotoisin sellaiselta alueelta, missä venäjän kieli on ollut vallitseva Neuvostoliitto ykkösen aikaan. Käsittääkseni Mongoliassa asuessaan puhui myös venäjää ja kävi oikeustieteiden opinnot venäjäksi. Lapsuuden kotikieli siis oli venäjä ja nykyinen kotikieli myös vaimonsa kanssa on venäjä. Näyttelijänä on myös käyttänyt venäjää. Puhuu kuitenkin myös ukrainaa, ei niin hyvin kuin äidinkieltään.

Ehkä tähän kielikysymykseen kannattaa kysyä neuvoa puolueemme puheenjohtajalta, joka tuntee ukrainan ja Ukrainassa käytetyn kielen sekä venäjän kielen erinomaisesti.

Mainittakoot, että myös Poroshenkon äidinkieli on venäjä ja välillä hän on jopa takellellut ukrainan kielen kanssa, ihan perussanojen kanssa kuten "lompakko"

Ja miten niin suhtaudutaan nuivasti, mieshän sai Länsi-Ukrainassakin enemmän ääniä kuin Poroshenko. Poroshenko voitti muistaakseni vain yhdessä oblastissa.

Venäjä on aimmin kertonut harkitsevansa nopeutettua kansalaisuusmenettelyä Itä-Ukrainan asukkaille.

Venäjä suunnittelee yksinkertaistettua Venäjän kansalaisuumenettelyä kaikille Ukrainan kansalaisille, Izvestija kertoo.

Venäjän presidentti Vladimir Putin antoi tällä viikolla määräyksen, jolla sallittiin nopeutettu kansalaisuusmenettely Itä-Ukrainan Venäjän tukemien Donetskin ja Luhanskin alueiden asukkaille. Putin perusteli päätöstä humanitaarisilla syillä. Venäjällä on Itä-Ukrainassa runsaasti sotakalustoa ja joukkoja.

Nyt Venäjän presidentti kuitenkin väläyttää, että päätös voitaisiin ulottaa kaikkiin ukrainalaisiin.

– Me ajattelemme yleisesti antavamme meidän kansalaisuutemme Ukrainan kansalaisille yksinkertaistetulla menettelyllä, Venäjän presidentti Vladimir Putin totesi lehdistötilaisuudessa Pekingissä.

Hän myös toppuutteli väitteitä siitä, että kansalaisuuden salliminen itäukrainalaisille aiheuttaisi kovia kustannuksia Venäjän valtiolle.

Ukrainassa päätökseen on reagoitu jyrkästi. Toukokuussa paikkansa tuoreelle vaalivoittaja Volodymyr Zelenskille luovuttava Ukrainan presidentti Petro Poroshenko käski Ukrainan ulkoministeriön kutsumaan koolle asiaa koskevan hätäkokouksen ja vaati kansainvälistä yhteisöä lisäämään Venäjään Ukrainan sodan takia kohdistettuja pakotteita.

On Sunday, July 21, Ukraine will be heading to the polls in a snap parliamentary election, called by the newly elected President Volodymyr Zelenskyi (SN-*). Originally, the election was scheduled for October, but right after his inauguration, Zelenskyi issued a decree on dissolution of the current session of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament), citing the lack of a governing coalition and the extremely low confidence of the Ukrainian public in this institution — just around 4% according to Rating surveys.

In the popular Ukrainian political comedy TV series 'Servant of the People', actor Volodymyr Zelenskyi played a school teacher, who unexpectedly ended up being elected President of Ukraine, fighting corruption. In 2018, a political party of the same name (SN-*) was registered and managed to transform this plot into reality, with Zelenskyi himself winning the 2019 Ukrainian Presidential election in a landslide victory.

Servant of the People campaigns on a pro-EU and pro-NATO platform, intending to increase the growth of the Ukrainian economy through radical reforms of the state, including reforms of judiciary, police, and electoral law, in order to increase confidence in the Ukrainian state. Public services are to be made available online, including possibilities of participation by direct democracy. In line with the television series it originates from, numerous anti-corruption measures are part of the election program. Furthermore, much emphasis is put on efforts to decentralise power both in the public (principle of subsidiarity) and the private (end of the monopoly of key industries) sectors. Some investigative journalists, however, argue that Zelenskyi himself has ties to Ukrainian oligarch Ihor Kolomoiskyi. Another important promise is to end the ongoing war with Russia by means of diplomacy, without giving up any territorial claims.

There is a "school" of thought amongst the more ideological Russophiles that the Ukraine has completely emptied out. Here is an article by Andrey Fomin in which he argues that it only has 22-24 million people versus the official figure of 42 million. This article is typical of the "genre".

I debunked such ridiculously low estimates in my "Ukrotriumph" article from last year.

Even so, while the Ukraine has more than 24 million people, it is still way short of 42 million. But by how much?

The official Ukrainian figures exclude Crimea, but include all of the Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts (including those controlled by the LDNR).
The official population of the LDNR is around 3.8M – let's consider it to be 3.5M in practice.
There are approximately 5M Ukrainians temporarily or permanently abroad at any given time (as will be reflected in the next Census in 2020).
So my best guess is that the real population of the Ukraine is currently around 33.5M (official: 42.0M).

More recently, Dean Fantazzini – an economist at Moscow State University – estimated the Ukraine's population to be 32.0M on the basis of regression of birth data for east and central Europe. As he notes, Igor Kolomoysky recently made the exact same estimate.

The blogger acer120 estimates 32.0-32.5M based on voter rolls.

Incidentally, commenter AP estimates that Ukraine's real population is 35.0M. So we can see a pretty good convergence of estimates from people all across the ideological spectrum.

For comparison, Russia's real population is around 150.1M (official: 146.8M). Perhaps the one bright spot (from Russia's POV) in post-Soviet relations between the two countries is that its population advantage over the Ukraine has increased from less than 3:1 in 1992 (148.5M to 52.1) to almost 5:1 today (146.9M to ~33M). It is ironic that Ukrainian independence has been worse for Ukraine's population balance vis-a-vis Russia than anything that Lazar Kaganovich and the Nazis did.

And it's rather likely that this dynamic will continue, especially if the Kremlin continues to make serious steps on my recommendation of vacuuming up Ukraine's remaining human capital.

The new Ukrainian government immediately said it was joining NATO and the EU. They also said they were taking over the Russian navy port in Crimea at Sevastopol. This port is crucial to Russia's national security. Russia was alarmed and said they would not permit Ukraine to join NATO, as that is a severe threat to their national security.

Crimeans began agitating for independence. Crimea has always been a part of Russia. It was only added on to Ukraine in 1950 by Khrushchev because he was a Ukrainian himself. When Ukraine declared its independence in 1991, Crimea refused to go along with it, saying they wanted no part of the new state. They had to be put down by force.

So the little green men came to Crimea and restored it to Russia. Crimea had a vote on independence, and ~90% voted for joining Russia. Repeated opinion polls since found that 85-90% of Crimeans support joining Russia.

At one point, the Ukrainian gained momentum, and it seemed like they were going to conquer the region. The separatists were retreating and everyone said they were going to lose.

At that point, yes, Putin did invade with ~10,000 troops to rescue the separatists. He never admitted it but they pushed the Ukrainian way back, recovered most of their territory, and even started easily conquering new territory where most people also supported the rebels. Russia lost 200 men in this fighting.

However the Ukrainians got massacred and at the moment, they have suffered 12,000 killed in action. The Ukie government lied and said they were "missing," and I believe that is still their official status.

Smoke from wildfires in the contaminated evacuation zone around the wrecked Chernobyl nuclear power plant has engulfed Kyiv, placing the Ukrainian capital near the top of the global air pollution index.

The authorities said Friday that radiation levels in Kyiv have remained normal, but they advised residents to stay home and close their windows. About 1,000 firefighters backed by aircraft have been deployed to battle the forest blazes near the site of the world's worst nuclear accident, which took place 34 years ago.

Wildfires erupted in the forests around Chernobyl on April 4, accidentally sparked by residents who were burning trash. The firefighting teams managed to contain the initial blazes, but new fires erupted Thursday, sweeping into wider areas thanks to strong winds.

Live air quality data on iqair.com placed the Ukrainian capital right behind several cities in China in air pollution on Friday.

The authorities in Kyiv said radiation levels in the capital, which is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the plant, were within norms. They also insisted that the wildfires were posing no threat to radioactive waste dumps and other facilities in Chernobyl, but advised Kyiv residents to drink a lot of water and cover windows with wet fabrics if they open them.

The fires are in the 2,600-square-kilometer (1,000-square-mile) Chernobyl Exclusion Zone that was established after the 1986 disaster at the plant that sent a cloud of radioactive fallout over much of Europe.

The zone is largely unpopulated, although about 200 people have remained despite orders to leave. Fires in the area raise concerns that they could spread radioactive material.
