QuoteGerman court jails Iraqi refugee Ali B. for life on rape and murder charges

A German court sentenced 22-year-old Iraqi national Ali B. to life in prison for raping and killing a 14-year-old girl in Mainz. The man had admitted to murder but insisted that he and the girl had consensual sex.

The Iraqi man who killed a teenage girl in Germany was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.

The court in city of Wiesbaden near Frankfurt found the 22-year-old Ali B. guilty of raping and murdering 14-year-old schoolgirl Susanna F.

The court also recognized that, due to the gravity of the crime, the defendant would be ineligible for parole during the first 15 years of his sentence.

Murder and migrant debate

The man had arrived in Germany as a refugee and applied for asylum, but his application was rejected. He was living in Mainz, also near Frankfurt, when the crime took place in May 2018. He defendant and the victim were acquainted through Ali's younger brother.

The girl's body was discovered near train tracks in a wooded area of Wiesbaden. Investigators found that she had been strangled to death.

For opponents of migration in Germany, the case grew to symbolize the failures of Chancellor Angela Merkel's policy.

Captured after fleeing to Iraq

Ali B. had admitted to the murder during the widely publicized trial, but denied the rape charge. He claimed that he and the victim had consensual sex and got into an argument on the day of the murder. The defendant told the court the girl had threatened to report him and then "[e]verything went black," he claimed.

"I don't know how it could have happened," he said, adding that he only remembered hiding the body.

Prosecutors claim the man used the girl's phone to text her mother that she was in Paris. Ali B. also said he had been consuming a lot drugs and alcohol around the time of the murder.

He then fled to his native Iraq, but was captured by Kurdish authorities and returned to Germany.

He is also facing charges in separate rape case, with prosecutors claiming that he repeatedly raped an 11-year-old girl, also while in Germany. Additionally, authorities link him with a mugging that took place in April 2018.

The Wiesbaden district court made its second verdict on Thursday against Ali Bashar. For the rape of an eleven-year-old girl, the judges sentenced him to seven and a half years in prison.

The court also ordered preventive detention with reservation. The co-defendant Mansoor Q. was sentenced to four-and-a-half years' imprisonment. Because the co-defendant and the victim are minors, the public was excluded from the trial and the verdict. The lawyer of Mansoor Q. announced after the judgment to want to appeal.

The 22-year-old Ali Bashar and the at least 14-year-old Mansoor Q. were charged before the Wiesbaden district court for rape and serious sexual abuse of an eleven-year-old girl. Already in July Bashar was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and murder of Susanna from Mainz.

Girl raped twice

Since March, he and the minor co-defendants have been tried before the youth protection chamber. The prosecution accuses the two of raping the girl twice in April and May 2018 and severely sexually abusing her.

In April, Bashar is said to have lured the girl to his room in an asylum shelter and forced sex with her. In May, both defendants allegedly raped the eleven-year-old. In July, when Ali Bashar was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crimes against Susanna, the judges noted the particular severity of the crime, which precludes early release after 15 years.
