Police banned from saying 'evening'

Quote [Expand]Police banned from saying 'evening'
Sunday, October 25, 2009

Police should avoid the 'evenin' all' greeting made famous by TV character Dixon of Dock Green because it is 'subjective' and could cause confusion among different cultures, it was reported today.
Warwickshire Police officers were warned words such as 'afternoon' or 'evening' might refer to different times among different nationalities.

Meanwhile, Met Police officers have been told to use the term 'gay' instead of 'homosexual' – but say 'heterosexual' instead of 'straight'.

And 'child' or 'youngster' are reportedly discouraged by Essex Police and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service because they could hint at 'unreliability or even dishonesty'.

They are advised to use the phrase 'young people'. The bizarre guidelines emerged today following a Freedom Of Information request.

'I have never heard of anyone being confused as to what part of the day it is,' Marie Clair of the Plain English Campaign told a newspaper.

Two schoolboys were given detention after refusing to kneel down and 'pray to Allah' during a religious education lesson.

Parents were outraged that the two boys from year seven (11 to 12-year-olds) were punished for not wanting to take part in the practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped.

They said forcing their children to take part in the exercise at Alsager High School, near Stoke-on-Trent - which included wearing Muslim headgear - was a breach of their human rights.

One parent, Sharon Luinen, said: "This isn't right, it's taking things too far.

"I understand that they have to learn about other religions. I can live with that but it is taking it a step too far to be punished because they wouldn't join in Muslim prayer.

"Making them pray to Allah, who isn't who they worship, is wrong and what got me is that they were told they were being disrespectful.

Family shut out of their 'dream home' by Romanian squatters who moved in over Christmas

By David Wilkes and Nick Mcdermott
Last updated at 4:07 AM on 13th January 2010

With the building works nearly over, Julian and Samantha Mosedale and their three children were looking forward to moving back into the home of their dreams.

But their hopes have turned into a nightmare because a group of Romanians occupied the property over Christmas.

To add insult to injury, police told them that they were being 'racist' for questioning the squatters' right to live in Britain on benefits.

The unwanted guests have changed the locks at the three-bedroom terrace house and moved in their own furniture.

Mr Mosedale, an illustrator, and his wife, a catalogue manager, both 45, had moved out of the house in Tottenham, North London, in July 2007 for extensive structural and renovation work.

They rented another property and regularly visited the £285,000 house to oversee progress.

But, after spending Christmas visiting relatives in Essex, they returned to the house on January 3 to find the squatters installed.

They now fear they could soon be homeless because they can only afford to foot the cost of rent and mortgage payments until March.

Mrs Mosedale, whose three sons are ten, eight, and five, said: 'We called the police as soon as we found out they were in there. An officer suggested I was racist when I asked if they were Romanians, and did they have a legal right to be in this country.

We are hard-working citizens yet get treated like criminals when our home is stolen. This whole thing is making me feel constantly sick. All we want to do is get on with our lives.

'We feel let down by the law, by government, and by the police, in fact all the authorities that one would expect to protect society.

'The house had builders in it while the renovations were being done. It was only in the last couple of months that it was left completely empty.

'Our lawyers don't know how long it will take us to get them out and the stress is really getting to the whole family.

'The kids are upset at the idea that other children are playing with their toys in the garden.

'Our son Jake is old enough to understand what is going on and he is finding it difficult to sleep.

'All the children are incredibly unsettled.'

Yesterday, the couple obtained a county court order giving the squatters 24 hours - until 2.15pm today - to leave.

But Mr Mosedale fears they will not give in easily.

He said: 'When the papers were served on them they tore them up and threw them back at the guy who'd taken them round.'

He and his wife are also worried that a drawn-out battle would exhaust their savings. They had planned to move back into the house in March.

Mrs Mosedale said: 'We were in the process of creating our dream home and it has been ruined.

'At the moment there are at least four women, four children and one man living in our home, but neighbours said they have seen many more people going in and out.

'In the meantime we face the prospect of becoming homeless ourselves, since we had only budgeted to pay both rent and our mortgage until mid March.'

Two sisters, Mihaela and Luminitsa Vaduva, are staying in the house with their seven children.

Speaking broken English, Luminitsa said: 'I don't understand the problem. We have paid for this home. If they move us out, then my children will not have a home.

'We are from Romania, we have no money for another home.'

She showed a tenancy agreement but could not provide a contact number for the landlord or say when they had moved in.

Quote [Expand]The Romanians at No 76: We'll go if you pay us £2,000, say squatters

By Paul Harris
Last updated at 9:48 AM on 14th January 2010

The privet hedge has seen better days and the paint is flaking a bit from a window at the back, but it's warm as toast inside number 76 St Margaret's Road.

In the lounge the kids are playing and everyone is watching a Home Alone DVD, dubbed into the family's native Romanian.

What a perfect domestic scene, except for one small detail - it's not their house.

The seven or eight members of two Roma gipsy families moved in over Christmas during a lull in works to transform the £285,000 Victorian mid-terrace into a 'dream home' for Julian and Samantha Mosedale and their three sons.

When the Mosedales, who were living elsewhere during the building works, asked the uninvited new occupants to leave they refused.

And even when Mr Mosedale turned up with a possession order to reclaim his property yesterday, the families demanded compensation for the £2,000 they claim to have paid to an unnamed man they claim posed as the landlord.

But they were finally compelled to leave by the court order that took Mr Mosedale two weeks to secure.

Young mother Luminita Miclescu stood in the snow outside (his) doorstep and declared: 'We came to England for help. This is how England helps us!'

Earlier, Luminita, breast-feeding her five-month-old son, had invited me into the soon-to-be-vacated home to hear her tale of woe.

Perhaps it would be unfair to describe it as incredible, but it might have needed more pinches of salt than they were spreading outside on the cold suburban street in Tottenham, North London.

Joined by her cousin Mihaela Vaduva and four lively toddlers, the women told how their husbands had seen a handwritten note on the gate of No 76 advertising it for sale.

Having just sold their home in Rosiori, near Bucharest, for just 3,000 euros, they said, they couldn't afford to buy the house.

But they rang the number on the sign and arranged to meet 'a black man who said he was the landlord' in the local McDonald's.

There, they said, the man took £300 deposit, £300 for a week's advance rent, and £1,400 for a security they didn't quite understand.

Then he deleted his number from their mobile phones and said any future business should be conducted in the same McDonald's.

He gave them a 'tenancy agreement' that bore his name, Joseph Winset, an East London address and the rental terms. No clues for guessing what happened next.

'We never saw him again', said Luminita. 'We tried to find him but we couldn't trace him.'

Speaking through an interpreter - and occasionally to each other in their own Roma language - the women said they were 'really upset' and added: 'We were tricked.'

They had no money, they said, but had applied 'for all the benefits we are entitled to'.

Luminita added: 'We were really shocked when the other man [Mr Mosedale] turned up. I think he was quite shocked too. We tried to explain but he couldn't understand us and we couldn't understand him. The other problem was we could not be sure it was his house.'

So would they leave? 'Where can we go?' said Mihaela. 'How can we be put on the street with all these children? If this is really his house he should pay. If he wants his house back, he should pay us that money back.'

Warming herself by a four-bar electric heater (with Mr Mosedale paying the bills) Luminita said: 'We realise now that the black man was not the real owner but I don't think it is fair to make us homeless.'

Homeless, that is, apart from the house down the road. Before the police arrived yesterday, the two husbands disappeared into another house about 100 yards away with an estate agent's board outside.

Throughout the day, the women carried their five children (plus some kitchen equipment and one of their two TVs) down the street.

But what of the elusive Mr Winset and his tenancy agreement?

A Romanian official working in the Court Service told me: 'You can guarantee he doesn't exist. These so-called agreements are becoming quite common - squatters can flash them at anyone who asks and claim they have a legal contract.'

Last night the family turned down a council offer to have their 'housing needs' assessed - and the women left carrying blankets and possessions. Luminita made a one-finger gesture to photographers and told our interpreter they were 'going to stay with relatives'.

The Mosedales, both 45, said they were 'greatly relieved' and bore the families no ill feeling. But Mrs Mosedale added: 'We have been quite shocked by it all, and by how squatting laws make it so difficult for house owners to do anything about it. I just hope someone takes notice of what has happened and the law changes in future.'
