Useita metrolinjoja on evakuoitu.

New Yorkin pelastuslaitoksen mukaan hälytys on tehty Port Authorityn bussiterminaaliin Manhattanin keskustassa.

ABC7:n uutisten mukaan poliisi epäilee mahdollisesti putkipommin räjähtäneen metron jalankulkutunnelissa bussiaseman alakerrassa.

Yksi henkilö on otettu kiinni. Vain muutamista loukkaantuneista on raportoitu.

Port Authorityn läheisiä katuja on myös suljettu liikenteeltä.

A suspect carrying a crudely-assembled improvised bomb is in custody following a blast in the underground walkway between Times Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal Monday morning.

The blast happened at around 7:20 a.m. during Monday morning rush hour.

Three other people suffered minor injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The other three transported themselves to area hospitals with symptoms like ringing in the ears, officials said.

The suspect has been identified as Akayed Ullah, 27, who was wearing an improvised explosive device, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

Ullah intentionally detonated the device, O'Neill said.

Ullah is from Bangladesh and had been living in Brooklyn. He arrived in the United States in February of 2011 and had a visa. He came in with his parents and 3-4 siblings and subsequently obtained a Green Card and became a permanent U.S. resident.

Ullah has two addresses associated with him in Brooklyn.

He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He suffered burns to his hands and abdomen.

Ullah made statements to investigators to the effect that he was inspired by ISIS.

"The question is did the suspect utter anything before he detonated the device," O'Neill said. "It's part of the investigation."

Pro-ISIS channels are celebrating Ullah as an "istishadi," an attacker, CBS2's Marcia Kramer said.

"He may have been inspired by ISIS. He could've been inspired by Al Qaeda. That he was at the very least inspired by Islamist terrorism," said Rep. Peter King. "It could turn out that this is part of a larger plot. It could be that he has been meeting with other people in Brooklyn or in New York or in the New York metropolitan area and that they could be planning on carrying out attacks. So you can't rule anything out at this stage. You have to assume the worst and work your way back."

A broken Christmas tree light bulb and a 9-volt battery were among the ingredients of a rudimentary do-it-yourself explosive device detonated by a bungling bomber Monday in a packed subway passage, according to a report.

Terror suspect Akayed Ullah constructed the pipe bomb by stuffing match heads into a narrow length of pipe and securing both open ends, according to The New York Times.

Ullah used a broken Christmas tree light bulb as an initiator to ignite the match heads when the bulb was turned on with the power of the small square battery, The Times said.

The device is potentially deadly, especially in the packed subway — when it works.

The explosion blew at least one of the caps off the pipe, but did not blow the pipe apart and turn it into shrapnel as intended, according to the report.

"The device is based on a pipe bomb," said John Miller, the NYPD's Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism.

"It was affixed to his person with a combination of Velcro and zip ties."

A typical pipe bomb usually consists of a section of metal pipe that is packed with an explosive mixture, like gunpowder or match heads, and sealed.

A fuse is then inserted into the device.

Once the fuse is lit, the pressure of the energy generated by the explosive bursts through the metal, causing the explosion and sending shrapnel outward.

Sometimes, a pipe bomb might contain nail or shards of metal, or it might have shrapnel packed around it.

Pipe bombs fail if the pressure doesn't rise to a high enough degree to trigger an explosion.

A would-be suicide bomber detonated a pipe bomb strapped to his body in the heart of Manhattan's busiest subway corridor, rending the early Monday commute with a blast that reverberated up through city's sidewalks, caused transit chaos and terrified thousands of travelers who fled headlong through tunnels choked with smoke.

He chose the location because of its Christmas-themed posters, recalling strikes in Europe against Christmas markets, he told investigators, and set off his bomb in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria and elsewhere, several law enforcement officials said.

But his makeshift weapon sputtered. The attacker himself was the only one seriously injured.

A suspect, identified by the police as Akayed Ullah, 27, an immigrant from Bangladesh who lived in Brooklyn, was in police custody. He suffered burns to his hands and abdomen, and was at Bellevue Hospital Center, according to Daniel A. Nigro, the commissioner of the New York Fire Department. Three other people had minor injuries, he said.

The Bangladeshi immigrant who blew up a pipe bomb in a crowded pedestrian tunnel under Times Square was convicted on all counts Tuesday afternoon — then blamed his failed attack on President Trump.

"I was angry with Donald Trump. He said he would bomb the Middle East," Akayed Ullah said after jurors left the courtroom.

Ullah, 28, also denied trying to kill commuters for ISIS, as he confessed to an NYPD detective following the Dec. 11 blast.

"I didn't do it for ISIS group," he said.
