ITALY: IMMIGRANT POPULATION TOPS 4.5 MLN,EU AVERAGE EXCEEDED

(ANSAmed) - ROME, OCTOBER 28 - There are over 4.5 million legal immigrants in Italy, amounting to one in 14 residents, according to a report released Wednesday by Catholic charity Caritas. According to the report, legal aliens now account for 7.2% of the population, exceeding the European Union average of 6.2% for the first time ever. Earlier this month, national statistics bureau Istat, placed the number of foreign residents at the beginning of the year at 3.8 million, amounting to 6.5% of the population.

Arvion mukaan maahanmuutto tulee kasvamaan ensivuoden kuluessa, lisäksi maahanmuuttajia oletetaan olevan tuplamäärä vuonna 2030 ja muslimien määrän oletetaan olevan 2.8 miljoonaa 20 vuoden päästä.

IMMIGRATION: ITALY; 4,737 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS STOPPED IN 2009
(ANSAmed) - ROME, DECEMBER 18 - In the first 11 months of the year the Financial Police stopped 4,737 non-EU citizens with no stay permit. Of these, 348 were arrested for non-observance of previous orders to be deported, according to the Financial Policés annual report released yesterday in Rome. Furthermore, 365 foreigners were stopped by naval units at sea and returned to officials in the countries from which they departed based on specific international cooperation measures assumed by the Interior Ministry. Istat estimated a total of 4.8 million immigrants in 2009, some 6.3% of the Italian population (60.2 million) and nearly twice as many as in 2001. Immigrants also shored up the size of the Italian electorate with over 44,000 gaining citizenship in 2008, most of them after marrying an Italian.

Two out of three immigrants are legally employed, some 67% against 58.7% of native-born Italians.

Foreign citizens make up an estimated 8% of Italy's labour force, Istat said. The unemployment rate, described as the percentage of people actively looking for work, was also higher among immigrants. Some 8.5% were estimated to be job hunting against 6.7% of Italians.

Undocumented labor is more than twice as common in the regions south of Rome than those north of the Po River, the study added.

The central regions in between averaged just over 10%. The report said the illegal work was most concentrated in the agricultural sector and that more than 25% of farm laborers worked illegally.

IMMIGRATION: NUMBER OF NORTH AFRICANS IN LOMBARDY GROWING

(ANSAmed) - MILAN, JANUARY 27 - The presence in Lombardy of immigrants from North Africa continues to grow by more than 10%. Moroccans form the second-largest community in the region, after the Romanian community, with a total of 127.5 thousand. According to the figures that were updated on July 1 2009, a 10.2% increase was recorded in 12 months. The presence of Moroccans in the region more than doubled over the past nine years (58.4 thousand in 2001). These results emerge from the report that was presented today in Milan by the Regional integration and multi-ethnicity board, created ten years ago by the Lombardy Region. The number of Egyptians has also increased sharply, to 77.2 thousand (+10.4% in one year and +142% compared with 2001), making it the fourth-largest community of immigrants in Lombardy. The presence of Tunisians has also increased though more slowly: to 27.5 thousand in July 2009 (+6.7% in 12 months). According to the governor of Lombardy, Roberto Formigoni, the immigrants "have faith in our community, our social structure and our institutions. (ANSAmed)- ROME, FEBRUARY 18- Immigrants are "once again crucial" for Italy's demographic growth: they're on a constant rise and represent 7.1% of the 60,387,000 residents at January 1st 2010, the national statistics institute (ISTAT) reports with today's release of 2009's demographic indicators. The number of births among migrants is 6.4 per thousand while the natural balance is negative (-0.3%), due to a rise in the number of deaths and a decrease in births compared to 2008. The increase in the resident population last year was 5.7 per thousand. The active population shows a 176,000 increase, mainly because of migrations from abroad, reaching 65.8% of the total. The number of under-14's grew by about 53,000 units (14% of total), while the number of 65 year-old's and over rose by 113,000 units (20.2%). (ANSAmed)

IMMIGRATION: 4.3 MILLION FOREIGNERS LIVE IN ITALY

(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, APRIL 15 - The number of foreigners living in Italy reached 4.3 million at the start of 2010. 74,000 of them were born in Italy but have maintained foreign citizenship, while 59,000 have obtained Italian nationality, a 10% increase on the beginning of 2009. The findings have been made by ISMU, a body promoting studies, research and initiatives on multiethnic and multicultural society, with particular emphasis on the phenomenon of international migrations. According to demographic indicators picked up on January 1 2010 and published on February 18 by ISTAT, the natural dynamic was negative during 2009 too, though the resident population grew again, thanks mainly to the positive overseas migration balance, as illustrated by 467,000 new registers against 83,000 cancellations. First among the new arrivals are Romanians (953,000, an increase of 20%), who are on the rise again after the large figures of 2007. Then come Albanians (472,000) and Moroccans (433,000), with both nationalities up by 7%. The Chinese are next (181,000, up 6%) along with Ukrainians (172,000, up 12%). 109,000 Moldovans arrived in the country, the highest rate of any national group in the top twenty with 22%, while about 100,000 new arrivals have been recorded from Poland, Tunisia, India and Macedonia. In 2009, 21.4% of babies born in Emilia Romagna had parents who were both foreign, around the same as Veneto (21.2%) and Lombardy, with 19.9%, while the average figure for the north of Italy was 19.5%. The percentage in the south slid to 3.5%, with minimum rates of 2.7% in Campania, Puglia and Sardinia. The average age at which foreign women gave birth in 2009 was almost 29, with a "projection" of 2.05 children each. On the other hand, the average age for Italian women giving birth was almost 32 (almost 33 in Tuscany and 30 in Sicily) with a final projection of 1.33 children per woman. (ANSAmed).

Laittomien maahantulijoiden määrä on tippunut 96% vuoden 2010 ensimmäisen neljänneksen aikana verrattuna edelliseen vuoteen.

Sisäministerin mukaan vähentyminen on seurausta Libyan kanssa tehdystä sopimuksesta ja nyt laittomien maahanmuuttajien virta kulkee kohti itä ja länttä eli Kreikkaa ja Espanjaa.

Lisäksi ministerin mukaan EU on tehnyt aivan liian vähän jakaakseen EU:n eteläosien maahanmuuttaja taakkaa muillekkin maille.

IMMIGRATION: ITALY, 170 ILLEGALS ARRIVED IN 2010 (-96%)

(ANSAmed) - ROME, APRIL 14 - 170 illegal immigrants arrived in Italy between January 1 and April 4 this year, compared to 4,573 during the same period of 2009; a fall of over 96%. The figure was announced by the Interior Minister Roberto Maroni during a Schengen Committee meeting. For the most part, Maroni explained, "they were found already on national soil, having arrived in boats and fishing vessels. The overwhelming majority left not from Libya, but from Tunisia and other countries". The Minister again criticised Europe, who he says is not doing enough to support the efforts of the countries, like Italy, that are most exposed to the movements of illegal immigrants arriving from Africa. "The EU has not accepted the subdivision of responsibilities regarding asylum seekers," Maroni said. "Effectively they are saying, 'they arrive in Italy, so you must deal with them'. But if the Union is really such a thing, it is only right that all members take a bit of the weight of the issue, not just the border countries". "After our agreement with Libya," he continued, "there was a change in the routes. Now streams head east towards Greece and West towards Spain. This resolves the problem for Italy, but not for Europe". Maroni also said that he hoped for a strengthening of Frontex, the European border agency. (ANSAmed).

SOCIETY: EVER-MORE MULTI-ETHNIC ITALY, 7% FOREIGN ORIGIN

(ANSAmed) - ROME - Italy is becoming more and more multi-ethnic, with a foreign-origin population at 7%, and the country's population is only growing thanks to the arrival of immigrants. The number of births continues to fall, being ''held up'' solely by the children of ''regularised'' immigrants. Such is the situation described by the country's statistical institute, ISTAT, in its 2009 population report. On December 31, there were 60,340,328 people living in the country - an increase of 295,260 (+0.5%) on the end of 2008 and this increase was due entirely to immigration from abroad. 7% FOREIGN ORIGIN - The number of foreign-born residents stood at 7% of the total, up from the 2008 figure of 6.5 'foreigners' per 100 residents. The proportion of foreign-born residents is much higher in the Centre-North (9.8%), in the North-East (9.8%) and in the North-West (9.3%) and the Centre (9%), compared to the South, where foreign-born residents account for just 2.7% of the total. BIRTHS TO IMMIGRANTS ON RISE - There has been an increase in the number of births from 1.7% to 13.6%. In numbers, that means a rise from the nine thousand births to residents of foreign origin in 1995 to over 77 thousand in 2009. In the North, births to foreign-born parents represent around 20% of the total; in the Centre this figure is 15%, while in the South it is only 3.6%. FALL IN NUMBER OF REGULAR ARRIVALS - 2009 saw the registration of 442,940 foreign-born persons with Italy's registry offices. This was 90 thousand few than the 2008 figure. This drop in the number of new registrations of immigrants is mainly attributable to the progressive unravelling of the effects of EU enlargement started in May 2007. Thanks to the decree on the free circulation of EU citizens - Romanians in particular - advantage has been taken of the opportunity to register as resident in Italy without any need for a residence permit. This effect has been gradually wearing off over the course of 2008, and increasingly during 2009, although numbers are still high. ITALIANS STILL MIGRATING FROM SOUTH TO NORTH - Last year internal transfers of residency involved around 1 million, 350,000 persons in all. The tradition of moving from the South to the North continues and from the North to the Centre. The rate of migration fluctuates between minus 3.9 per thousand in Basilicata to plus 2.6 per thousand in the autonomous province of Trento, which is closely followed by the 2.5 per thousand for Emilia-Romagna. INCLUDES FOREIGN-BORN RESIDENTS - These internal migratory flows are also due to movements by foreign-born residents, who follow the same direction as the Italians but appear to be even more prepared to move. Indeed, although foreign-born citizens account for just 7% of the population they account for over 16% of internal movements. THE BALANCE BETWEEN BIRTHS AND DEATHS - In 2009, 568,857 babies were born in Italy (7,802 fewer than in 2008) and 591,663 people died (6,537 more, but with a death-rate steady at 9.8 per thousand). There was therefore a negative balance between the number of births and deaths of 22,806. This represents a demographic trough for the past ten years, following that of 2003, a year in which mortality hit high figures due to a very hot summer. There was a positive births/deaths balance in the South, particularly in Campania and in Apulia, as in Lazio, in the two autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano, in Veneto, Lombardy and Valle d'Aosta. A COUNTRY OF SMALL TOWNS - Italy's 12 large conurbations with populations over 250,000 account for 9 million of the country's residents, just 15.1% of the total. In all, these areas saw an increase in population of 30,377. There was growth in the large cities of the Centre North: Milano (+9.1%), Florence (+8.8%) and Rome (+7.1%). But there was shrinkage for the large urban areas of the South, with Palermo shrinking in population by 5.1%. (ANSAmed).

IMMIGRATION: EU, ITALY AMONG COUNTRIES TO GRANT MOST ASYLUM
(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JUNE 18 - Italy is part of the group of European countries that in 2009 granted more asylum permits: this was announced by EU statistics office Eurostat. According to the data released today, in 2009 a total of 78,800 asylum permits were granted in the 27 EU countries, on 260,000 requests that were presented. Of these, most were granted by the UK (12,500), followed by Germany (12,100), France (10,400), Sweden (9,100), Italy (8,600) and the Netherlands (8,100). These countries together are responsible for three quarter of all permits that were granted in Europe. In 2009 most citizens who obtained the refugee status came from Somalia (13,400, 17% of the total), Iraq (13,100) and Afghanistan (7,100). Italy accepted 2,400 Somali, Sweden 4,000 and the Netherlands 3,600. Italy also welcomed 1,305 Eritrean citizens. (ANSAmed).

IMMIGRATION:ITALY'S 2010 'FLOW DECREE' SEES 100,000 ADMITTED

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JANUARY 3 - Around 100,000 permits were granted to non-EU immigrant workers by Italy's ''flow decree'' in 2010, which appeared on the Official Gazetteer on December 31. The provision, (dating from November 30, 2010), which took the form of a Prime Ministerial Decree, fixed a quota of 98,080 workers to be shared among the country's regions and autonomous provinces under the Ministry for Labour and Social Policy. Job applications will be accepted from January 31.

As part of the quota system, 30,000 citizens who are currently not resident in Italy may be taken on in the areas of domestic work, as assistants and in care work. To this are added a further 6,000 persons contained in a decree dating back to April.

(ANSAmed) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 23 - The number of foreigners residing in Italy now number of 4.5 million after growing by 335,000 in one year, which is less of an increase than the previous year. The number of foreigners compared to the general population continues to increase, growing from 7% to 7.5%, while more than one in five foreigners are Romanian. This is the snapshot of the resident population of foreigners, updated to 1 January 2011, provided by national statistics institute, ISTAT, in its report on "The Resident Foreigner Population in Italy". There are 4,570,317 foreigners more than the previous year, but the increase is slightly less than the growth registered in 2009 (343,000). ISTAT underlined that the number of resident foreigners increased in the course of 2010 mainly as a result of the effect of immigration from abroad. In 2010 nearly 78,000 foreign children were born, 13.9% of the total number of births registered by residents in Italy. This figure increased by 1.3% compared to last year, but was much lower than figures from 2009 (+6.4%). Regarding geographic distribution, 86.5% of foreigners reside in Northern and Central Italy, while the remaining 13.5% are in Southern Italy.

Väitän että Italiassa on huomattavasti enemmän maahanmuuttajia kuin mitkään viralliset laskelmat näyttää. Iso osa on laittomasti maassa, eikä kirjoilla missään.
Samalla laittomat maahanmuuttajat joutuvat helposti kaikenmaalaisten -niin italialaisten kuin muittenkin- mafioiden käskytettäviksi. Palkkaakaan ei tarvi maksaa eikä mitään työehtosoppareita noudattaa kun tyypit ei edes virallisesti ole maassa. Niin se on edullista se tomaatinpoiminta Italiassakin.

Italian tilastokeskuksen mukaan ulkomaalaisten määrä maassa tulee kolminkertaistumaan vuoteen 2065 mennessä.
Ulkkareita on nyt 4.6 miljoonaa ja vuonna 2065 heitä arvioidaan olevan 14,1 miljoonaa.

Italy: foreigners to triple by 2056

The foreign-born population is set to rise from 4.6 million now to 14.1 million in 2065, the statistics agency said in a report on future demographics. (ANSAmed)
