Woman charged with attempted murder over stabbing of Labour MP Stephen Timms

A woman has been charged with attempted murder over the stabbing of a former Labour minister.

Stephen Timms was stabbed twice in the stomach as he held a surgery for constituents on Friday afternoon.
Unemployed Roshonara Choudhary, 21, will appear before Stratford Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

Mr Timms was attacked during his regular Friday afternoon surgery in his East London constituency.
Choudhary, wearing what appeared to be Muslim dress, allegedly lunged at him and stabbed him twice before being restrained by a security guard and arrested.

The accused was allegedly armed with two knives. Scotland Yard said it found one at the scene but another was reportedly also found hidden in her clothes later.

Sagal Ahmed,16, a student at Kingsford Community School, was in the community centre in Beckton when the stabbing happened.

'We just heard this big commotion so we ran in to the room,' she said. 'The security guard had grabbed this Asian woman. She was wearing a long black outfit like what Muslims wear and an orangey headscarf. I think she was a Muslim.

'She wasn't saying anything. They were just grabbing her to keep her still. She was really shaking. The Muslim woman seem shocked and distressed. It was the most shocking thing I've ever seen.

'Then we saw the man [Mr Timms] getting put in another room. We saw the blood on his shirt but I couldn't tell where he'd been stabbed. They were dragging him. He was conscious. He looked shocked and he was pale.'

Sir Robin added: 'Why do you stab somebody? You go in to see somebody who is trying to help people and you stab him. Why do you do that? I think there are mental health issues. I can't imagine any other reason and if any other reason is given, it is still for me a mad thing to do.'

He dismissed suggestions that MPs should scale back their surgery work in response to the incident.
'No MP could do that,' he said. 'If you cut yourself off from your constituency and your voters, what are you there for?'

Sir Robin, who has known Mr Timms for more than 20 years, said he spoke to the MP last night, adding: 'I think he was handling it very well.'
Acting Labour leader Harriet Harman expressed her concern saying: 'One of the great strengths of the British political system is the every day accessibility of MPs to their constituents but we can't have a situation where MPs are at risk.'

Shahid Mursaleen, spokesman for the Newham-based moderate Muslim organisation Minhaj-ul-Quran UK, said: 'We are shocked and saddened to hear that Stephen Timms MP has been stabbed.
'Mr Timms has always been close to his constituency and a friend of Muslims living in east London. He has been a good friend of Minhaj-ul-Quran.
'We wish him well and his recovery to be soon and hope that he can resume his position as MP of East Ham soon.'


The attack on the former Treasury minister raised new questions about security surrounding politicians.

Mr Timms, who married Hui-Leng Lim, 56, in 1986, has the safest Labour seat in the country and increased his majority in last week's election.

The MP's personal popularity in his constituency is reflected by the fact that he secured a 7.7 per cent swing from the Conservatives in last week's election, when Labour was generally losing ground across the country.

He won a remarkable 70.4 per cent of the vote and his 27,826 majority is the largest in the new House of Commons.
He describes himself as a Christian Socialist and is Labour's vice-chairman for faith groups.

Mr Timms has been MP for the constituency - and previously for Newham North East - since 1994.
He has regularly spoken out against knife crime in his constituency, particularly among young people.
In 2006, he spoke at an event to mark the death of 15-year-old Charlotte Polius, who was stabbed while walking in the street the previous year.

Lontoo. Brittiläistä kansanedustajaa ja entistä ministeriä Stephen Timmsia on puukotettu työväenpuolueen puoluetoimistossa Itä-Lontoossa, kertoi poliisi perjantaina.

Timms, 54, vietiin paikalliseen sairaalaan, mutta hän ei tiettävästi saanut vakavia vammoja. Poliisin mukaan puukotuksen yhteydessä on pidätetty 21-vuotias nainen.

Timms valittiin ensimmäisen kerran parlamenttiin vuonna 1994. Hän oli useaan otteeseen ministerinä pääministeri Gordon Brownin ja tämän edeltäjän Tony Blairin hallituksissa.

Former Treasury minister Stephen Timms was stabbed in the stomach after warmly greeting his attacker with the words 'Hello, I'm sorry for the wait.'

As the Labour MP went to shake the disturbed woman's hand she twice plunged a knife into his body at a constituency surgery.

Security guards had grown concerned about the woman, wearing Muslim dress and a headscarf, as she grew visibly more agitated waiting to see the MP at the surgery in Beckton, East London.

Witnesses told how the suspect, who had two kitchen knives concealed in her cardigan, had been tutting, grinding her teeth and rolling her eyes.

A mother of four, who had been sitting next to the woman as they waited to see the 54-year-old MP, said: 'There was so much anger in her face.

'She came in and said, "I'm here to see Stephen Timms".

'She was tutting and hissing and rolling her eyes.' The witness added: 'When she got the knife out it was so quick, I think he thought she was offering her hand.'

Instead, she pulled a six inch kitchen knife from her cardigan and stabbed Mr Timms twice before one of the MP's assistants wrestled the knife from her grasp.

A member of the public tried to stem the flow of blood using clothing from her child's PE kit.

Onlookers said his attacker appeared calm and did not try to run away following the stabbing.

A judge was subjected to a tirade of abuse in his own courtroom yesterday as he jailed an Al Qaeda-inspired Muslim woman for attempting to assassinate an MP.

Islamist protesters harangued Mr Justice Cooke from the public gallery at the Old Bailey, shouting ‘Allahu akbar’ (‘God is great’), ‘British go to hell’ and ‘Curse the judge’.

The outbursts came as Roshonara Choudhry, 21, was sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing former minister Stephen Timms. Choudhry smiled broadly as the judge told her: ‘You said you ruined the rest of your life. You said it was worth it. You said you wanted to be a martyr.’
