A Frenchman was locked in a police cell for two days and is now facing court over a lewd joke email sent to the country's former justice minister Rachida Dati.

The man allegedly contacted the MEP at the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week and asked her if he could have 'an inflation'.

It followed Miss Dati's recent widely reported slip in which she mixed up a word for a sex act with 'inflation' – the two sound similar in French – during a radio interview .

At the time she managed to laugh off her mix-up, saying she had spoken too quickly. However it appears the 44-year-old mother of one did not see the funny side of the email.

Police raided the home of the 40-year-old man, in Bourg-de-Péage, south east France, after he was traced by his computer's IP address. The machine was seized and he was held for 48 hours, his lawyer said.

The man was charged with 'displaying contempt towards a public servant', an offence punishable with a prison sentence of up to a month and a 10,000 euro fine.

His lawyer claimed there was nothing offensive about the email as it contained an innocent euphemism and 'was addressed to Miss Dati as a person and not as a public servant'.

Miss Dati, who was sacked from Nicolas Sarkozy's cabinet last year, shared the president's uncompromising attitude to upholding the law.

Lyon prosecutor Anthony Paganelli claimed the email had been used 'to lower the reputation' of Miss Dati.
