Novy Bor, North Bohemia, Sept 8 (CTK) - About 50 Czech Romanies, mostly residents of a house in Nemocnicni Street in Novy Bor where the water utility has cut off water supply to rent defaulters, staged a rally at the town square yesterday, demanding new flats.

The Romanies also demand at least 30,000 crowns as a bail for new flats. If their demands are not met, they will launch a hunger strike.

However, the town hall says they are mostly rent defaulters, owing a total of up to half a million crowns.

The town hall has sold the strongly devastated house to a new owner.

"The people lived there illegally, they can be denoted as squatters," Mayor Jindrich Mares said.

"We have terminated their lease contracts and we have paid the debt they owed us instead of them," Mares said.

Mares said the new owner who was not so patient with the tenants had the water supply cut off.

The house is inhabited by five families and some 40 people can be found in it.

The demonstrators have asked the town hall to bring in a water tank and provide them with some alternative accommodation.

"A water tank is only provided in the event of a natural disaster. They can pay it from their own pockets," Mares said.

"Town regulations do not allow for ensuring an alternative accommodation to habitual rent-defaulters," he said, adding that the only family that did regularly pay the rent had already received alternative accommodation in a hostel.

The residents want the town hall to pay at least a 30,000-crown bail for new accommodation.

"This might be a solution, but I am not sure this will be approved. Times are difficult and every crown is spent cautiously," Mares said.

"When the local glassworks folded recently here, no glass worker came to ask us to pay anything to him," he added.

The town hall will deal with the problem this evening.

"If our problem is not satisfactorily resolved, ten people will start a protest hunger strike this evening. We are also preparing a national demonstration in Prague," Miroslav Tancos, leader of the Romany Democratic Social Party, said.

Toivottavasti EU ei saa tastakin itkupotkuraivareita ja laita jostain romani-rahastosta tarvittavia masseja. Toivottavasti menevat lakkoon ja mielellaan ilman etta kukaan yrittaa asialle mitaan tehda, muutakuin jatkavat saatavien karhuamista korkoineen.

Eli Romania ja Bulgaria ovat aloittaneet ohjelmia romanien olojen parantamiseksi EU(?) rahastojen turvin.

Tämä on oikea suunta, ja meppien pitäisi puhua sen puolesta, että romanien kotimaan oloja parannetaan, eikä vaatia vapaata oleskelua ja kuljeskelua pitkin Eurooppaa.
