2009-12-05 Ruotsi: Hallitus tilasi sikäläiseen Kepaan tilintarkastuksen

Ruotsin hallitus on päättänyt, että maan kehitysapua kanavoivassa Sidassa suoritetaan ylimääräinen tilintarkastus. Syynä moiseen on organisaation leväperäinen taloudenpito, joka on johtamassa budjetoitujen määrärahojen reippaaseen ylitykseen. Toimintakuluihin osoitettua 900 miljoonan kruunun määrärahaa oltiin jo ylittämässä 10 prosentilla ennen kuin Sitassa havahduttiin ongelmaan. Loppuvuonna toteutetun vyönkiristyksen jälkeen alijäämä saataneen pudotettua kuuteen prosenttiin, mutta tämäkään ei riittänyt hallitukselle.

Rahat eivät ole menneet maailman hädänalaisille, vaan sitä on palanut liikaa palkkojen maksuun ja toimitilojen hankkimiseen.

Sida officials reject aid minister's criticism

Five top officials at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) have issued a statement criticizing development aid minister Gunilla Carlsson, report several Swedish media.

The officials are concerned about the image portrayed by the Carlsson in the media in regards to Swedish development aid and Sida's various programmes and activities.

SIDA Stops Aid because of Fraud Suspicion

Sweden's foreign aid organization

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency SIDA has stopped its financial aid to a Bosnian research center that is suspected of fraud. The center was supposed to receive 600,000 dollars to finance a documentation of civilians killed during the Balkan War of the early 90's.

The contract with the center was canceled after SIDA learned that board members are under police investigation for embezzling funds and for tax evasion. SIDA now demands that the center must pay back 300,000 dollars it has already received.

Union and Opposition Defend Aid Agency

A longstanding fued between Sweden's overseas aid minister, Gunilla Carlsson, and the Swedish aid agency, Sida, reached boiling point when the minister sacked the agency's general director this week.

Staff and union representatives at Sida, as well as Sweden's opposition social democratic party said today that the minister's criticism is misdirected and politically calculated to win points ahead of this autumn's general election.

"We find the criticism about overseas assistance unjust," said union representative, Ted Wallin.

"On the other hand the criticism concerning internal problems within the organisation and the economy [internal finances] is correct."

"She represents the only party in Sweden that wants to lower the aid budget. And of course it's helpful if aid is seen as not effective or full of corruption," he said.
