Hidden in woodland, on the site of an old coalmine, the well-organised camp known as Vietnam City is usually home to between 40 and 100 Vietnamese migrants, some of them minors, who are on their way to the UK to work illegally in cannabis farms, nail bars and restaurants, according to charity workers who recently visited. New, previously unpublished photos from the camp show squalid living conditions, with residents cooking and sleeping in unsafe conditions in a derelict coalminers' barracks, with a collapsed roof and no heating.

The site, about 60 miles (100km) south-east of Calais, has been chosen by traffickers because of its proximity to a service station on the motorway where lorry drivers stop to rest, before travelling to the ferry port to cross to England. There is less security here than at the port, so it is easier to smuggle people into vehicles.

Their arrival has prompted fears that migrants have opened up a new route into Britain by stowing away on ships that depart from the port. Tougher security measures surrounding Calais have made it harder and harder for migrants to sneak on to ferries there. So they have turned their attention to Ouistreham, where security measures are less stringent.
Last night it remained unclear whether the migrant who boarded the pickup truck actually made it across the Channel.
A witness to yesterday's incident said: 'As soon as the truck stopped at the red light the migrants were quickly trying to jump on.
'Only one made in on board before the lights changed. This is happening almost every day. They know exactly when the ferries leave for Britain and plan their days around these timetables.
'Unlike Calais, there are not hundreds of policemen stopping them. At the moment they see this as their best chance of success.'
British holidaymakers have this summer reported seeing a growing number of migrants loitering around the port.
Those travelling in caravans have been warning each other to be vigilant as they approach Ouistreham.

Help us... or our town will become the new Sangatte: Mayor fears his port town will turn into another refugee centre as dozens of men target trucks

It is a scene reminiscent of Calais before the notorious Jungle migrant camp was torn down.

Dozens of young men target lorries as they drive slowly towards the quiet ferry port of Ouistreham in Normandy.

Without a policeman in sight, they break open the back doors and hide inside the trucks in the hope of reaching the UK.

This daily – and potentially deadly – game of 'cat and mouse' prompted officials in the town to plead for help.

Deputy Mayor Luc Jammet warned that Ouistreham, which serves as a port for nearby Caen, was in danger of turning into 'the new Sangatte' – a reference to the centre near Calais that attracted thousands of migrants and became a haven for people smugglers before it was closed down in 2002.

He said the town's infrastructure and small police force is not equipped to deal with a 'well-coordinated group of young men determined to get to Britain'.

Migrants believe they have a better chance of sneaking on to one of the three ferries that sail to Portsmouth each day than they do at other ports.

Put off by high security at Calais, young African and Asian men started arriving earlier this year and numbers have grown rapidly.

Asad Gul, 33, from Peshawar in Pakistan, told the Mail: 'I was told this was the best place to try to get on to a ferry to England.

'Everybody is talking about Ouistreham as the new place to go. This has been my dream since I left home six years ago. There are no jobs in Pakistan.'

Overstretched police who catch migrants climbing into lorries have been told to issue a warning and let them go, allowing them to try again.

One Sudanese migrant told the Mail he had been caught 45 times in the two months he has been sleeping rough in the town.

Grinning as he gave a thumbs-up to one frustrated lorry driver, he said: 'It's all a game. It's what you in England call 'cat and mouse'.

'We know which lorries to go for. They are the old ones that are easier to get into. One day they won't catch me and I will make it to England. I am sure of it.'

Three hours before each ferry departs Ouistreham, which serves as a port for nearby Caen, groups of migrants take up positions at points around the town.

Some create a diversion to distract police while others target lorries at traffic lights on a residential road. This week the Mail watched as dozens sprung from hiding places and forced open lorries. Those left outside bolted the doors as the lights turned green.

Lorry drivers aware of the problem refuse to stop at red lights, creating an obvious risk.

Alain Hurel, a waiter who lives on the street with his partner Noemi Fernandez, 45, said he is constantly telling the migrants to leave his property. 'It has got a lot worse since August,' said Mr Hurel, 46.

'Every day they are sitting against the wall of my house. We don't feel safe.

'One day they tried to take my partner's phone off her. There are not enough police. We are on the frontline and no one is helping.'

Mr Jammet, who is in charge of security in the town, said most of the migrants are from Eritrea and Sudan, but there are others from Albania, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan.

'It is getting worse,' he said. 'We need more help. We need more police officers, but this is a problem that has to be resolved at a higher level.

'There is a big number of migrants who are waiting to go to the UK. If some have success getting on the ferries then more will come here.

'We want to make sure that the town doesn't become the new Sangatte. The town is worried. We are powerless.'

SATOJA PAKOLAISIA ja siirtolaisia asuu yhä Calais'ssa Ranskassa, vaikka alueella sijainnut leiri on purettu noin vuosi sitten, kertoo brittilehti The Guardian.

Vuosi sitten Ranskan viranomaiset hajottivat pahamaineisen Calais:n viidakkoleiriksi nimetyn siirtolaisleirin. Alueelle on saapunut jatkuvasti siirtolaisia, ja uusi, pienempi mutta entistä pahamaisempi leiri on alkanut kohoamaan alueelle.

Ranskan viranomaiset hajottivat vuosi sitten Calaisin viidakkoleirin, johon oli kerääntynyt yli 7 400 siirtolaista yrittäessään pääsyä Britanniaan salamatkustajana rekka-auton tai kuorma-auton kyydissä.

Calaisin tilanne on kuitenkin vielä huolestuttavampi kuin aiemmin, sillä siirtolaisten "kovin ydin", noin kymmenesosa alkuperäisen viidakkoleirin asujaimistosta – on palannut pahamaineiseen "viidakkoon".

Paikallisen prefektuurin mukaan leireissä majailee noin 500 siirtolaista, mutta avustusjärjestöt ja Calaisin pormestari Natacha Bouchart arvioivat määrä olevan jopa 700.

Erityisen huolestuttavaa tilanteessa on se, että leiriin palanneet, Britanniaan pyrkivät siirtolaiset ovat päättäväisiä ja väkivaltaisia. Lähes päivittäin Britanniaan meneviä rekka-autoja ja kuorma-autoja häiriköidään, tielle asetetaan esteitä ja yhteenottoja tapahtuu erilaisten yhteisöjen välillä.

Avustusjärjestöistä kerrotaan, että alaikäiset ovat kaikkein väkivaltaisimpia ja usein alkoholin vaikutuksen alaisina.

Pitkästä aikaa bongasin tarinan, jonka päähenkilöiden touhut saivat nauramaan. Kertoo kolmen iranilaisen kumivenereissusta Calaisista Doveriin. Tai ainakin yrityksestä.

One of the trio, Saman, a slim 28-year-old university graduate, did not know how to swim. To be on the safe side, the others had bought him what they described as a "cheap Chinese life jacket." Saman made a quick call to his elderly mother in Iran. "I will call you soon from England," he told her, before joining the other two men on the boat. They began rowing.

At first, the water seemed calm. There were small waves, but nothing worrisome, especially for Peyman, the eldest of the three. He had spent most of his life in Bandar Anzali, a port city on the Caspian Sea in Iran. "I am the child of the sea," he said.

The men could see the lights of the English port of Dover shining like bright stars in the clear sky. As they kept rowing, the men thought of nothing but reaching Dover. Soon, the small waves grew taller and more furious. They rowed for one hour without moving far. Their boat began spinning. The harder they rowed, the more they span. The inflatable was quickly filling up with water. Saman removed the water one fistful at a time.

"I thought I was going to die. I saw everyone in my family before me. I said goodbye. I asked my mother to forgive me for any hardship I brought to her," said Mehran, the third Iranian voyager.

Peyman was the most worried. "I know the sea and its temper. I knew our boat could not face the challenge ahead of us. I could hold on to the boat and save myself. But I was worried about Saman. I felt responsible for his life. We had to go back," Peyman said.

It was nearly daybreak when the boat reached the shore. Five hours after embarking on their journey, the men were exhausted and shivering from the cold and fear. Even the French police were surprised they made it back. "I thought I would be facing three dead men, looking for phone numbers to call your families about your fate," an Iranian interpreter for the police said.

Saman called his mother. Peyman broke down in tears. "I have to be honest, I cried like a baby. Migration makes you lose your mind. You go mad," Peyman told me a day later, sitting on the sidewalk near the train station in Calais and puffing on a cigarette.

The next morning, Peyman hopped on a train to Paris and later to Germany. Three days later, I took a bus with Mehran and Saman to Dunkirk. "God saved us this time," Saman said. They would no longer risk their lives in the sea. The men contacted a Kurdish smuggler who asked them to go to Dunkirk and wait.

Most of the Iranians I met in the Dunkirk Jungle have since left, except for Mehran. A smuggler hid Mehran and a few others in a truck, but the police caught them and Mehran spent a month in jail. He is now back in the Dunkirk Jungle waiting for the next shipment of people.

The temperature is dropping fast in northern France. It rains a lot. The grounds of the Jungle are wet and muddy. "I am worried about Mehran," Saman told me on the phone recently.

"I hope to find a place where I can do what I love the most," Mehran told me the last time we met. "I want to be an opera singer. Opera is my life," he said.

Iraqi Gang Accused of Smuggling 40 Migrants a Day to UK Arrested

French police have disrupted an Iraqi gang suspected of trafficking around 40 migrants a day to Calais and into Britain, with three arrests made and vehicles seized.

The gang is thought to have smuggled the illegal migrants in refrigerated lorries, which are sealed and are less likely to be opened for checks.

Three Iraqi men, aged 30, 36, and 38, were arrested Angoulême, southwest France, according to Charente Libre. A fourth man was placed under judicial control and six vehicles were seized, including a Volkswagen Passat registered in the UK.

In August, French police discovered 10 migrants, including five children, in a refrigerated lorry on the A63 motorway 580 miles from Calais.

The illegal migrants had been transferred to the region when the infamous Jungle migrant camp in Calais was evacuated last autumn.

Two more refrigerated lorries carrying migrants to the UK illegally were discovered in the region shortly afterwards.

French police put the gang under surveillance, and say they used fast cars to transfer around 40 migrants to lorry parks between midnight and 5 am every day.

Media on etukäteen osannut kertonut, että Macron tulee vaatimaan lisää rahaa Britannialta Calaisin ongelmaan ja ehdottaa Ranskan myötämielistä suhtautumista Britannian vapaakauppasopimukseen EU:n kanssa, JOS, May suostuu ottamaan "aivan yksintulleita alaikäisiä lapsia" Calaisin leiriltä.

Ranskan viranomaisten mukaan vuonna 2017 Calaisista yritettiin päästä laittomasti Iso-Britanniaan noin 115 000 kertaa. Tällä hetkellä Calaisin alueella notkuu 500-700 laitonta mamua, jotka ovat muodostaneet väkivaltaisia jengejä.

French officials have revealed there were more than 100,000 attempts on Britain's border last year from Calais, where violence has risen along with the number of illegal immigrants returning to the port town since the 'Jungle' camp was cleared.

Despite the official number of migrants living in Calais standing at just a tenth of the figure seen in October 2016, when the camp was demolished and migrants sent to accommodation across France, the number of attempts to break into Britain fell by only a third.

A source at the French presidency said there were around 115,000 cases in which illegal immigrants tried to breach the Channel Tunnel or board lorries and trains in the hope of reaching the UK in 2017, compared to 167,000 attempts made in 2016, The Times reports.

The number of migrants living in Calais as they seek to break into Britain is thought to currently stand at around 500 to 700, down from an estimated 7,000 before the 'Jungle' was evacuated, but violent clashes between gangs of illegal immigrants still plague the northern French town, where a truck driver heading to the UK died last year as a result of migrant attack.

According to The Times, riot officers had to intervene on Sunday night after gunshots alerted them to a fight between migrants from Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa, who were armed with knives and iron bars.

And late last year an officer was hurt when hit by a car carrying nine immigrants as the vehicle's driver attempted to evade a roadblock set up by police, on a day in which five Afghans were injured in a shootout between groups of migrants.

French president Emmanuel Macron is making a visit to Calais on Tuesday ahead of Thursday's talks with UK premier Theresa May, at which she will discuss the situation at Britain's border with France.

Desperate migrants storm UK-bound trucks outside Calais

Despite the demolition of the Calais jungle, charities say there are 700 camped out around the town and another 300 in Dunkirk.

Nearly 1,000 people are still camped out in Northern France desperately hoping to get into Britain, despite the demolition of the Calais jungle 15 months ago.

Sky News has witnessed the daily attempt by some of the young migrants to access trucks bound for the UK, just hours before the French President is due to arrive in the port town.

Emmanuel Macron is meeting police and charities who are trying, with conflicting methods, to deal with the town's continuing migration problems.

His visit comes two days before he travels to the UK where he is expected to call on the British government to take in more migrants and contribute more money for the policing and security of the port town.

We filmed from a distance as they ran towards the rear of the Croatian-registered vehicle. Four of them climbed into the rear trailer. The others looked for hiding places under the truck, and then gave up and ran off.

Minutes later we approached the driver who was aware of the migrants' presence. He opened the trailer and two heads popped up from between the cargo.

Abruptly, he shooed them away. Haulage firms are dealing with this on a daily basis.

The single, privately contracted, security guard at the fuel depot watched, apparently powerless.

The other two young men could not be found but the driver seemed convinced that his vehicle was empty.

In the woods up the road, not far from the old jungle camp, we found 24-year-old Zahid Ullah Oryakhil from Afghanistan.

He took us to see his bed for the night, in the undergrowth under a tarpaulin.

From his bag, under his stash of bread rolls - donated daily by charities - he produced his paperwork.

Everyone has papers. It's their proof that they exist. Often there is written testimony too - his has been translated into English by someone he'd met on his journey. It outlines his reasons for wanting a new home: "Taliban kill my brother" one section reads.

He said that he had applied for asylum nine times in Belgium and was rejected every time. After the fifth failed attempt in 2013, he went to what was the Calais Jungle and made it, on a truck, to London.

"They deport me from the UK on 24th March 2014 and send me back to Belgium. But I come to Calais again, and I go to England again. I go out of the truck in England. Police catch me. They send me again to Belgium."

He then tried for asylum four more times in Belgium and after the most recent attempt, he was given six hours to leave the country.

He is now back in Calais to try to reach the UK for the third time. He explains that he's heard rumours that the UK's decision to leave the EU will increases his chances of asylum in Britain.

Mohammas and Zahid's stories demonstrate their determination but also point to a failing system.

Asylum claims are rejected, in some cases repeatedly, but the claimants are not sent home or helped where they are.

Instead they are pushed out of one country to become someone else's problem. It is happening all the time.

Not far away from their woodland home is the £2.3m motorway wall built which lines the port approach road.

Built in 2016, with British money, it was designed to keep the migrants off the trucks. But every day proves that it is useless.

Down the road, at the end of the wall's reach, another group shelter from the rain under a bridge. Sodden, miserable and desperate, they wait for their moment.

Ranska ja Britannia julkistamassa uuden sopimuksen siirtolaisista

Ranskan presidentti Emmanuel Macron ja Britannian pääministeri Theresa May julkistavat torstaina maiden välisen uuden siirtolaissopimuksen, kertoi Ranskan presidentinkanslia keskiviikkona. Sopimuksessa käsitellään sitä, kuinka kohdellaan Ranskasta Britanniaan yrittäviä maahanmuuttajia.

Macronin kanslian mukaan sopimuksen yksityiskohtia vielä viimeistellään, mutta se koskee muun muassa Britanniaan yksin yrittäviä alaikäisiä.

Tuhannet Britanniaan tähtäävät laittomat siirtolaiset ovat päätyneet Ranskan rannikon läheisyyteen. Ranskan hallitus antoi purkaa Calais'n lähellä sijainneen leirin loppuvuodesta 2016.

Sopimus julkistetaan Macronin ja Mayn tapaamisessa Britanniassa torstaina. Presidentinkanslia kertoi myös, että Macron tapaa perjantaina Pariisissa Saksan liittokanslerin Angela Merkelin. Aiheena on Euroopan tulevaisuus.
