Seeking asylum in the Netherlands
More than half the people seeking asylum in the Netherlands last year were from Iraq or Somalia.

Statistics Netherlands CBS puts the total number submitting their first request for asylum last year at just under 15,000. That's 11 percent more than in 2008.

The number of Somalis increased by a third and the number of Iraqis decreased. The CBS says this is because the special status for asylum seekers from Central Iraq was abolished in November 2008.

Overall, the population of the Netherlands increased by 92,000 in 2008. This is the biggest growth spurt since 2002. A total of 111 thousand people emigrated last year, while there were 147 thousand entering the country.

Despite the general greying of the population, there were 134,000 deaths, fewer than in 2008.

The population of the Netherlands was 16.6 million on 1 January 2010.

Vuonna 2009 yli puolet turvapaikanhakijoista oli Irakista tai Somaliasta. Turvapaikanhakijoita oli 15 000 eli 11% enemmän, kuin edellisenä vuonna.
Irakilaisten määrä laski, mutta somalien määrä kasvoi kolmanneksella.

Lisäksi 111 tuhatta ihmistä muutti pois ja 147 tuhatta puolestaan saapui maahan. Vuoden 2010 alusta Hollannin väestö oli 16,6 miljoonaa.

Ten percent of refugees granted asylum in the Netherlands eventually opt to move on to a different country.

The finding comes in a study by the statistics office commissioned by the Dutch Refugee council. Of 38,000 refugees who settled in the Netherlands before 2000 and were granted asylum between 1998 and 2008, one in ten had left the country by 2008.

Puolessa tapauksista turvapaikanhakija tekee uuden viimehetken anomuksen. Vuonna 2008 hallitus päätti vähentää valitusoikeutta, mutta tätä ei ole vielä laitettu käytäntöön.

20% epäonnistuu viranomaisten virheestä kuten myöhästyminen käännytettävän toimittamisessa lentokentälle.

200 tapauksessa käännytyksen väkivaltainen vastustaminen aiheuttaa viivästyksiä. Oikeusministerin mukaan viranomaiset kokeilevatkin tänä vuonna väkivaltaisille käännytettäville tarkoitettua naamaria joka estäisi puremisen ja räkimisen.

One third of deportations fail

Around one third of the 5,500 planned deportations of failed asylum seekers and illegal immigrants failed last year, the NRC reported on Thursday, quoting monitoring committee figures.

In around half of cases, the asylum seeker made a new, last-minute request to be allowed to stay, the committee said. Government plans to reduce the right of appeal agreed in 2008 have not yet been put into practice, the paper says.

Around 20% of deportations fail because of procedural errors by officials in charge of the service, such as failing to inform the border police or failing to get the deportee to the airport on time.

And a further 25% of cases collapse because the would-be refugee does not have the proper paperwork, the paper says.

Violent resistance led to 200 deportations being delayed.

Justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin told MPs that this year officials are to experiment with fitting violent deportees with a special mask which stops them biting and spitting.

Hollanti: Vuoden 2011 alupuolella (7 120) tuli maahan hiukan vähemmän turvapaikanhakijoita, kuin edellisen vuoden (7 290) ensimmäisellä puolikkaalla. Maahanmuuttajien yhteismäärä ei kuitenkaan vähentynyt kun otetaan mukaan myös ei-turvapaikanhakijat kuten työn tai opiskelun perässä tulleet sekä perheenyhdistämiset.

Tiukentuneet perheenyhdistämissäännöt eivät vielä näy tilastoissa.

Turvapaikanhakijoiden määrä tippui 13% vuonna 2011 verrattuna vuoteen 2010. Jos kuitenkin otetaan myös huomioon henkilöiden toiset ja kolmannet hakemukset niin tiputusta oli vain 3%.

Asylum requests in Netherlands drop again

The number of people seeking asylum in the Netherlands dropped significantly in 2011. The total number of new requests for official refugee status was 11,590. The figure for 2010 was nearly 2,000 higher, at 11,590. That's a decline from 2010 to 2011 of approximately 13 percent.

The figures are the result of an analysis conducted by the ANP press agency and the Sargasso weblog of official asylum data provided by Statistics Netherlands.

It's the second sizeable fall in new asylum applications in a row, after 2010 showed a drop of around 11 percent compared to 2009.

In total, however, asylum applications in 2011 amounted to 14,630 - a drop of three percent compared to the preceding year. This figure includes second and third requests for asylum.
