THE Austin serial bomber is dead after he detonated an explosive device inside a car as he was approached by police on the side of a road, authorities have confirmed.

Austin police chief Brian Manley told reporters that police were following the 24-year-old "white male" suspect in a car when he suddenly pulled over. Several members of the SWAT team approached the vehicle on foot when "the suspect detonated a bomb inside ... knocking one of our officers back" and causing minor injuries, Mr Manley said. A police officer reportedly then fired his weapon.

The Austin Police Department tweeted early Wednesday morning local time that the shooting involving one of its officers happened in response to the explosion in the 1700 block of N. Interstate 35 in Texas.

The identity of the bomber has not yet been released as a "medically examination" is pending and his next of kin have not yet been identified.

A motive has not yet been established, according to police. A criminal investigation has been launched into the bomber's final moments by Texas Police.

Mr Manley said it had been "a long three weeks".

"Austin has dealt with package bombs and other bombs in our community," he said.

"We've seen members who have lost their lives and others whose lives have changed due to significant injuries."

But there are fears the bomber may have taken steps to continue his reign of terror even in death.

"We don't know where the suspect has spent the last 24 hours so we still need to be vigilant (to make sure — no other packages or devices have been left throughout the community," Mr Manley said.

"We don't know if he was on his way to detonate another bomb ... he obviously had one with him."

US officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and local police are on the scene where the bomber died in Round Rock, north of Austin.

The offender's death comes just hours after CBS News obtained the first pictures of him dropping off two suspicious packages at a FedEx facility on Sunday.

Miehen kanssa samaa kotikoulua käynyt Jeremiah Jensen kertoi New York Timesille, että tämä ei ollut erityisen poliittinen, mutta keskusteli mielellään eri teemoista ja saattoi hermostua erimielisyyksistä.

– Hän oli dominoiva keskustelija, Jensen sanoi.

Poliisin mukaan Conditt selittää videotunnustuksessaan, kuinka hän rakensi kaikkiaan seitsemän pommiaan, joista viimeistä hän käytti itsensä surmaamiseen. Poliisin mukaan tunnustuksesta käy myös ilmi, että miehen oli tarkoitus jatkaa sirpaleilla ladattujen pakettipommiensa valmistusta.

Viranomaiset kertovat myös löytäneensä miehen jäljiltä "kohdelistan".
