Northbound immigrants making their way to the US through Central America are taking to the sea to avoid tougher border enforcement in Mexico.

The exodus by sea of migrants from Guatemala to Mexico is not as complicated nor as big as the in the movement of Middle Eastern and African refugees traveling through the Mediterranean to get to Europe, but it can be just as deadly, newspaper El País reports.

Migrants funneling through Mexico en route to the US had in the past relied on "La Bestia," or the beast, a cargo train on which they rode as stowaways. The nickname was warranted—those who boarded it risked life and limb by traveling on the train's roof or hanging in between the carriages.

But at the bequest of the US, Mexico has taken a series of measures to keep migrants off the train, including increasing its speed. Mexican authorities have also bulked up border patrols and stepped up deportations.

So many immigrants are now taking small fishing boats from the municipality of Ocós, just south of the Mexican border with Guatemala, to ports on Mexico's Pacific coast. It's not a long trip by land; Ocós is about 50 miles (80 km) from the commonly used port of Mazatán, in the Mexican state of Chiapas. But on an overcrowded boat at night, it can be more dangerous than "La Bestia." Last June, three children drowned, writes El País.

Trump increases deportations of formerly protected DREAMers

The Trump administration has stepped up the deportation of undocumented immigrants who had come to the United States as children and lost their protected status, which had allowed them to stay, federal data provided to USA TODAY shows.

Both the Obama and Trump administrations revoked the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status of enrollees who committed serious crimes, became affiliated with gangs or otherwise became threats to public safety. Under Obama, that led to 365 former DACA enrollees being deported, an average of seven a month since the first DACA applications were approved in September 2012.

In the first month of Donald Trump's presidency, 43 former DACA enrollees were deported, according to Department of Homeland Security statistics requested by USA TODAY.

"This is more evidence that the Trump administration is making nearly every person who's undocumented a priority for removal," said Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, a group that advocates for immigrants in the U.S. "That's a really poor use of law enforcement resources."

President Barack Obama created DACA to protect undocumented immigrants who were brought to the country before they turned 16.

Under the program, those with clean criminal records who were going to school or graduated could submit an application to the federal government. If approved by the Department of Homeland Security, the immigrants were protected from deportation for two years and could receive a work permit. They could also re-apply to extend their DACA status for an additional two years.

More than 750,000 people were approved for the program and the vast majority were granted a renewal.

DACA was not, however, an absolute guarantee. If an enrollee was convicted of a felony, a "significant misdemeanor" or three other misdemeanors, their protected status could be revoked. That happened to 1,488 people under Obama and Trump combined.

Under Obama, 507 were allowed to stay in the country vs. the 365 deported. Some were released on bond, some were kept under supervision and others were freed. Under Trump, 20 were allowed to remain in the U.S. compared to the 43 who were deported.

Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates for lower levels of immigration, said that increase in deportations shows how federal immigration officers feel more comfortable pursuing deportations under Trump than Obama. "They knew who those people were and felt empowered to act on them right away," Vaughan said.

The Department of Homeland Security said part of the reason for the spike in deportations is that "a number" of those deported were already in removal proceedings when Trump assumed office on Jan. 20. Department spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said the remainder were simply part of the regular process of deporting people whose DACA was revoked.

"The grounds for DACA termination have not changed since the inception of the program," Christensen said.

But the grounds for people being deported have changed. Trump issued an executive order on Jan. 25 that vastly expanded the reasons why undocumented immigrants are considered priorities for deportation. Now, undocumented immigrants who are only charged with crimes can be deported, a big change from the Obama administration, which required people be convicted of crimes.

Homeland Security data show that 676 immigrants whose DACA status was revoked still face removal proceedings. Ninety of them remain in custody.

German chancellor takes a dig at US President Donald Trump while visiting Mexico.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in Mexico on Saturday (10 June) that building walls would not fix the problems of immigration. The statement is seen as a jibe at President Donald Trump who made erecting a wall between the US and Mexico one of his major presidential campaign pledges.

With geopolitical experts saying that Merkel would be the ideal figure to fill the global leadership vacuum left by Trump's "America First" policies, the German leader has constantly stepped up her combative tone – whether on immigration, climate change or European relations.

Speaking alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at a business event, she called for addressing the root causes of immigration.

"We must fight against the causes that lead people to abandon their homes. And constructing walls isn't going to help," said Merkel, a pastor's daughter who was raised in communist East Germany behind the Iron Curtain. She played a pivotal role in Europe embracing more refugees from strife-torn countries. Germany has accepted more than one million refugees since 2015.

Instead of barriers, what was needed was raising the living standards and opportunities in the afflicted countries in order to effectively manage large-scale migration, Merkel said.

"It's an issue you can study well in the history of China with the (Great) Wall of China; you can study it in the history of the Roman Empire. Essentially, only when great empires have managed to forge sensible relationships with their neighbours and to manage migration has it been a success. I don't think that by simply improving the border facilities you can solve the problem," Merkel said.

She also threw her weight behind Mexico on the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta). On several occasions, Trump has attacked the deal demanding renegotiation of the terms to suit US interests and threatened to withdraw from the pact. Trump had also slammed Germany's US trade surplus previously.

Spike in migrant deaths on US-Mexico border since Donald Trump became President

Heavy rainfall in the last few months has made the Rio Grande river, one of the crossing points, much faster and deeper

More people crossing the United States-Mexico border are dying, despite significantly fewer people attempting the journey according to the UN's migration agency.

"Some 232 migrant fatalities have been recorded in the first seven months of 2017, an increase of 17 per cent compared with the 204 deaths recorded between January and July 2016," said Julia Black, of the Missing Migrants Project, part of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM.

The UN agency stated that the US Border Patrol has caught 140,024 migrants between January and June 2017.

"Fifty bodies were recorded as discovered in July, the most recorded in any month so far this year," Ms. Black said. Their bodies were discovered in various locations including along the Rio Grande, 16 in Texas and ten fatalities inside a truck at San Antonio.

Pima County in Arizona is one of the most dangerous crossings, with 15 bodies found here. Temperatures can reach about 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). To date this year, 96 corpses were found in Pima County. The number could be much higher as many migrant deaths go unreported.

Heavy rainfall in the last few months has made the Rio Grande river much faster and deeper, according to the IOM. Also known as Rio Bravo, at 1,885 miles (3,034 km) long, it is the fourth longest river system in the United States.

The report does not identify what could be bringing about the change, but stricter immigration policies in the US have historically been cited for driving people to take more dangerous routes. No More Deaths, an advocacy group in Arizona, claims that immigration policies have grown more hostile since President Trump was elected in 2016.

The MMP has catalogued over 1,250 migrant fatalities on the US-Mexico border since 2014. The figures are set to increase over 2017, as Ms Black says "it's something that is true for all regions of the world, unfortunately."

Several members of migrant caravan have reached the US-Mexico border to seek asylum

President Donald Trump has deployed troops to secure the border

At least 50 members of a migrant caravan that has been travelling through Central America and Mexico has reached the US border and are seeking asylum.

The group, which at one point reached a peak of 1,500 people from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, had prompted US President Donald Trump to call in the National Guard troops from Arizona and Texas in order to secure the border and continues on with plans to build a 2,000-mile border wall.

The group dwindled as word of Mr Trump's threats spread and Mexican authorities separated those who were legally allowed to stay in Mexico from those who were not. Though some of the migrants have been granted entry, "there have already been cases of people being illegally turned away by border officials when trying to request asylum at the U.S. border," a spokesperson for Pueblo Sin Fronteras, an immigrant rights group, told Newsweek.

More migrants are expected at the border near Tijuana, Mexico, soon as well. "Since yesterday, some began to cross into the United States to turn themselves in from Tijuana and request asylum. We understand more...will do the same," Jose Maria Garcia, director of migrant assistance organisation Juventud 2000, told Reuters.

Toisin kuin Riku luulee, tarinan opetus ei ole otsikkoon nostettu teepussiaforismi, että "ilman tulevaisuudennäkymiä ihminen menee yli vaikka kilometrin korkuisesta muurista", vaan se, että suhtautuminen laittomiin siirtolaisiin on ollut Yhdysvalloissa leväperäistä ja kaksinaismoralistista. Jos laittoman työn teettämiseen olisi puututtu aikoinaan kovalla kädellä, Miguel ja hänen Pollockin kaverinsa eivät olisi koskaan tulleet rajan yli laittomasti ensimmäistäkään kertaa. Miguelin tarina välittää sen Suomessakin ajankohtaisen viestin, että maahanmuuton hillitseminen ja ongelmien ennaltaehkäiseminen on vaikeaa, kun jotkut tekevät maahanmuutolla paljon rahaa.

Maahanmuuton luomien ongelmien ratkominen jälkikäteen on erityisen vaikeaa ja viheliäistä. Siksi länsimaalla pitää olla lähtökohtaisesti tiukka, ongelmia ennaltaehkäisevä maahanmuuttopolitiikka, jota muut politiikan alueet tukevat. Näin ei ole ollut Yhdysvalloissa, eikä näin ole ollut Suomessa.

Mexico faces a mounting crisis at its southern border, where thousands of migrants remain crowded and pressing for entry after some groups managed to break through.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rushed to Mexico City on Friday to confer with his counterpart, and declared the situation is reaching 'a moment of crisis' and posing 'a challenge for American sovereignty.'

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray Caso insisted Mexico would not cave to pressure to detain the migrants, saying: 'Mexico's migration policy is for Mexico to decide.'

As night fell at the border with Guatemala, many migrants prepared to camp out on the bridge over the Suchiate River, which had earlier been the scene of chaos and violent clashes with riot police.

The migrants hurled rocks and other objects at hundreds of riot police, who responded with rubber bullets and tear gas. At least six Mexican federal police officers were injured in the clashes.

About 50 managed to push their way through before officers unleashed pepper spray and the rest retreated, joining the sea of humanity on the bridge.

Manelich Castilla, the head of Mexico's federal police, said at the bridge that his officers had restored order after the rush of migrants towards the border, and would begin allowing people to be processed in an orderly fashion.

Mexican authorities insisted the migrants would have to file asylum claims one at a time in order to enter the country.

Mexico's government has sought assistance from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

On Friday morning, Videgaray said the caravan had close to 4,000 people and that the migrants could individually present their claims to enter Mexico or seek refugee status.

'We haven't had a caravan or group of this size seeking refuge at the same time, that's why we've sought the support of the United Nations,' he told Mexican television.

Mexico says the migrants without a legitimate case to claim refuge in Mexico will be returned to their countries of origin. A Mexican official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the country had the capacity to process around 200 people a day.

On his trip to Mexico City on Friday, Pompeo said that he had stressed the importance of stopping the caravan before it reaches the U.S. border in his conversation with Foreign Minster Videgaray Caso.

Ultimately, he said, Mexico will have to decide how it wants to deal with the crisis.

'The way that Mexico will handle this, the way that you will handle this, is your sovereign decision,' Pompeo said, turning to address Videgaray Caso. 'Mexico will make its decision.'

Karavaanissa olevat eivät jaksaneet odottaa rajalla ja hakea turvapaikkaa, vaan ylittivät rajajoen veneillä tai uimalla.
Rajan yli päässeet 2000 kokoontuivat Meksikon puolella ja päättivät jatkaa matkaa Yhdysvaltoihin.
He menivät takaisin sillalle ja käskivät loppujakin sillä olevia ylittämään rajan. Karavaanin koko voi vielä kasvaa tuosta kahdesta tuhannesta.

Migrant caravan re-forms in Mexico, members vow to reach US

Despite Mexican efforts to stop them at the border, about 2,000 Central American migrants swam or rafted across a river separating that country from Guatemala, re-formed their mass caravan in Mexico and vowed to resume their journey toward the United States.

The migrants, who said they gave up trying to enter Mexico legally because the asylum application process was too slow, gathered on Saturday at a park in the border city of Ciudad Hidalgo. They voted by a show of hands to continue north en masse, then marched to the bridge crossing the Suchiate River and urged those still on it to come join them.

"We are going to reach the United States," said Erasmo Duarte, a migrant from Danli, Honduras, despite warnings to turn back this week from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has sought to make the caravan and border security in general into a campaign issue a little over two weeks before midterm elections.

The decision to re-form the migrant caravan capped a day in which Mexican authorities again refused mass entry to migrants on the bridge, instead accepting small groups for asylum processing and giving out 45-day visitor permits to some of them. Authorities handed out numbers for people to be processed in a strategy seen before at U.S. border posts when dealing with large numbers of migrants.

But many became impatient, and circumventing the border gate, swarmed across the river on rafts, swimming or wading in full view of the hundreds of Mexican police manning the blockade on the bridge. Some paid locals the equivalent of $1.25 to ferry them across the muddy waters. They were not detained on reaching the Mexican bank.
