Police found a woman's body inside an apartment complex in Australia's most populous city. Her death is said to be "linked" to the stabbing attack during which the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" before being arrested.
The woman's body was discovered with a slit throat, police confirmed to multiple news outlets. It happened hours after a man armed with a knife went on a rampage in Sydney, injuring two female bystanders. Police believe the body is "linked" to this incident.

The suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" and "shoot me" before a group of locals subdued and pinned him to the ground. He was then arrested and is now in custody.

The Guardianin mukaan mukaan epäilty mies hyökkäsi ohikulkijoiden kimppuun Sydneyn keskustan liikekorttelissa noin kello kahden aikaan iltapäivällä paikallista aikaa.

POLIISIN mukaan mies oli aseistautunut veitsellä ja oli peittänyt kasvonsa kommandopipolla. Hyökkäys kesti kuutisen minuuttia, kunnes sivulliset taltuttivat miehen.

Video from the scene shows a distraught male yelling "Allahu Akbar!" as he jumps on the roof of a black car at an intersection. The vehicle then flees and the attacker jumps on the ground shouting: "shoot me!"

A while later, a group of bystanders and firefighters – who happened to be nearby – managed to pin the assailant to the ground and hold him down with a crate and a pair of chairs until police arrived to arrest him.

Praising their actions, superintendent Gavin Wood said: "To approach a person, with clear evidence of a stabbing, these people are heroes."

Authorities are still in the dark over the "causation or rationale" for the attack. However, Wood announced that the suspect acted "on his own" and had no accomplices. Reports say he may have fled a mental health facility recently, but it is still to be confirmed.

An armed man has been arrested after stabbing a woman in central Sydney and being detained on the street by members of the public.

A second woman was found dead inside an apartment building on the same street.

"All the information we have at hand would link these two crimes," police commissioner Mick Fuller said at a press conference.

He said the suspect was a "lone actor" with a history of mental health issues.

He was known to police but "his history was unremarkable compared to the gravity of the crimes he committed", Mr Fuller said.

The police commissioner said the suspect had some ideologies related to terrorism, but had no apparent links to other terrorist organisations.

It is believed the man had a USB drive containing details of mass killings in New Zealand and the United States.

Mr Fuller said the stabbing is not currently being classed as a terrorist incident but this would be reassessed as the investigation continues.

About 45 minutes earlier a 21-year-old wielding a butcher's knife had allegedly stabbed a woman at King St's Hotel CBD.

The man, later identified as Mert Ney, subsequently moved around the block, only to be detained near Wynyard by acts of bravery by members of the public and the fire department.

But by 3.15pm the visible activity in the area where Mr Ney's alleged rampage first started was petering out.

According to a bystander, Rob Baker, the man told the officers he had heard a woman's screams from inside a nearby building.

The man took one of the officers to the front door of the apartment block at 104-118 Clarence Street, a building known as Clarence House.

There they struggled to enter the building. The officer and the young man tried to gain the attention of those inside by pressing on multiple apartment buzzers.

Soon after a young woman came to the door, a mobile phone in one hand. Visibly distressed, the woman appealed to the officer: "you've got to help me."

The officer followed the woman and raced inside the building, calling behind him for police back-up. The young man who first alerted police to the woman's distress ran to find more police.

Within minutes, officers and ambulance staff were streaming into the Clarence St apartment block. Within 10 minutes, police had shut down Clarence St and established a crime scene.
