Mikä muuten on Tanskan rikastumisprosentti nykyisin? Tanskan hallitusta syytetään "rajusta politiikasta", mutta unohdetaan täysin lähtötilanne. Jos tilanne on pitkälle, niin vaikuttavien toimenpiteidenkin pitää olla "rajumpia".

Tanskan hallitus vaihtuu, mutta se on edelleen riippuvainen "populistisen" Tanskan kansanpuolueen tuesta, joten matupolitiikka tuskin muuttuu kovin paljoa. Kansanpuolueen tuki hallitukselle ei kuitenkaan ole itsestään selvää, sillä julkisen sektorin suuruudesta ja verotuksesta on erimielisyyksiä.

Tanska saa uuden hallituksen - Tarvitsee edelleen tukea populistipuolueelta

Kyseessä on edelleen niukka vähemmistöhallitus.

Tanska saa maanantaina uuden koalitiohallituksen, kirjoittaa Jyllands Posten.

Pääministeripuolue Venstre jakaa hallitusvastuun tästä eteenpäin Liberaalin allianssin ja Konservatiivipuolueen kanssa.

Pääministeri Lars Løkke Rasmussen totesi tiedotustilaisuudessa, että uusi hallitus tulee tekemään töitä kovasti etenkin sen eteen, että maassa luodaan pienemmät sosiaaliset ja taloudelliset erot ihmisten välille.

Puolueet pääsivät yhteisymmärrykseen hallituksen muodostamisesta koko viikonlopun jatkuneiden neuvotteluiden jälkeen. Alun perin pääministeri Rasmussen kutsui tukipuolueet neuvonpitoon jo 19. marraskuuta.

Uudet ministerit esitellään pääministerin mukaan huomenna maanantaina. Kyseessä on ensimmäinen kerta Liberaalille allianssille, kun se saa ministerin.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen lähestyi puolueita yhteistyön merkeissä välttääkseen uudet vaalit. Liberaalin allianssin puoluejohtaja Anders Samuelsen on jo useiden kuukausien ajan uhannut kaataa yksipuoluehallituksen, mikäli ylintä tuloveroa ei lasketa viidellä prosenttiyksiköllä.

Nyt puolueet ovat ilmoittaneet päässeensä sopuun, jonka mukaisesti yhä harvempi tanskalainen osuu suurimpaan veroluokkaan.

Vaikka hallituksessa on nyt yhden puolueen sijasta kolme puoluetta, on kyseessä edelleen vähemmistöhallitus. Populistista Tanskan kansanpuoluetta ei kutsuttu neuvotteluihin, vaikka hallitus on edelleen sen tuesta riippuvainen toimissaan.

Rasmussenin hallitus on tarvinnut tähän mennessä tukea kolmelta puolueelta saadakseen tavoitteitaan läpi. Nyt kun hallitukseen houkuteltiin niistä kaksi, tarvitaan oppositiosta enää Tanskan kansanpuolueen mandaatit. Jyllands Postenin mukaan ei ole kuitenkaan itsestään selvää, että puolue suostuu yhteistyöhön hallituksen kanssa. Erityisen paljon erimielisyyksiä puolueella ja hallituksella on julkisen sektorin suuruudesta ja verotuksesta.

Rasmussenin hallitus on tarvinnut tähän mennessä tukea kolmelta puolueelta saadakseen tavoitteitaan läpi. Nyt kun hallitukseen houkuteltiin niistä kaksi, tarvitaan oppositiosta enää Tanskan kansanpuolueen mandaatit.

Tanskan kansanpuolue ei ole hallituksessa, mutta hallitus on silti saanut aikaan muun muassa rajatarkastukset, ympäri maailmaa paheksutun "korulain" ja kiintiöpakolaisten vastaanoton lopettamisen. Tanska ei myöskään ota vastaa EU:n jakelemia kiintiöturvapaikanhakijoita.

Juutinrauman silta kyllä erottaa ajattelutavaltaan kaksi läheistä valtiota toisistaan. Tanskassa realistinen kansanpuolue on ollut apupuolueena hallitukselle ja siten saanut vaikutettua paljonkin siihen, miten kehitysmaahanmuuttoon suhtaudutaan. Sillan pohjoispäässä on myöskin vähemmistöhallitus, mutta siellä apupuolueet on sitä varten, että hullutuksia jatketaan niin ettei realistit pääse vaikuttamaan asioihin. Poliittinen järki pitää näemmä heittää Itämereen, kun kulkee pohjoiseen sillalla.

Tämä rikkoo taatusti kansainvälisiä sopimuksia ja kerjäläisten ihmisoikeuksia Pöyristyttävää.

Tanskalla taitaa tuo rajavalvontakin toimia nykyään siihen malliin, että tämä karkotettu ei pääse livahtamaan maahan uudestaan. Suomessa tällaisesta karkotuksesta ei olisi tällä hetkellä käytännössä mitään hyötyä.

Ensimmäinen tuomio Tanskassa: Slovakialainen nainen karkotetaan kerjäämisestä

Oikeudenkäynnin aikana ilmeni, että nainen oli tullut Tanskaan nimenomaan elättääkseen itsensä kerjäämällä.

Kööpenhaminalainen oikeus on ensimmäistä kertaa Tanskan oikeushistoriassa tuominnut kerjäläisen karkotettavaksi. Oikeus on langettanut slovakialaiselle naiselle 40 päivän vankilatuomion ja karkotuksen.

– Voi vaikuttaa tylyltä karkottaa henkilö rahan kerjäämisestä, mutta tosiasia on, että kerjääminen on laitonta Tanskassa, sanoo syyttäjä Anne Jacobsen lehdistötiedotteessa.

Oikeuden mukaan nainen on tuomittu kerjäämisestä useaan otteeseen aiemminkin. Tällä kertaa käsiteltävänä oli uutta kerjäämistapausta.

Oikeudenkäynnin aikana ilmeni, että nainen oli tullut Tanskaan nimenomaan elättääkseen itsensä kerjäämällä. Slovakialaisena nainen on EU-kansalainen, mikä antaa korkeamman suojan karkotusta vastaan. Oikeuden mielestä karkotus on kuitenkin perusteltua.

– Kun henkilö tulee Tanskaan toistuvasti elättääkseen itsensä rikollisesti, silloin on jossakin vaiheessa sanottava ei. Ja niin tuomioistuin on tehnyt, sanoo syyttäjä Anne Jacobsen.

Nainen ei ole vielä päättänyt, valittaako hän tuomiosta.

WAR ON DENMARK'S STREETS: Police and protestors in furious clashes over immigration chaos

VIOLENT clashes over immigration have erupted between police and opposing protest groups in Copenhagen, leading to the arrests of 11 people.

Police scrambled to contain confrontations between the "Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West" group, PEGIDA, and pro-immigration counter-protestors.

A video of the dramatic encounter caputures the moment where riot police form ranks to stop pro-immigration protestors reaching the nationalist group, founded in 2014.

The open-borders hooligans – who held banners saying "make racists afraid again" – set bins and pieces of wood ablaze and lit a bonfire in the middle of the road before physically barging the police.

Bizarrely, one protestor dressed as Santa Claus held a sign saying "Santa says no to racists".

Police had to extinguish a fire and unblock the roads.

Officials confirmed 11 people were arrested but police refused to say what group they were from.

Riot squads prevented the two protest groups – held at different parts of the city – from meeting.

Police spokesman Rasmus Skovsgaard said arrests were made for vandalism and violations of public order, as well as one case of violence against a public official.

As many as 100 people attended the pro-immigration rally, the spokesman added, with no information an the number of people at the PEGIDA protest.

PEGIDA was founded in 2014 by German national Lutz Bachmann.

The movement aims to resist and oppose Islamic extremism and calls for stronger enforcement of laws to curb immigration.

Tanskan 2017 budjetin vaikutukset ulkomaalaisiin

Perjantaina 19.11.2017 Tanskan hallitus sopi Tanskan kansanpuolueen, Liberal Alliancen ja Konservatiivisen kansanpuolueen kanssa Tanskan vuoden 2017 budjetista.


Osana sopimusta hallitus myöntyy pitkään listaan Tanskan kansanpuolueen vaatimia maahanmuuttorajoituksia.

Tanskassa asuviin EU:n ulkopuolisten maiden kansalaisiin vaikuttavat seuraavat uudet maahanmuuttosäännöt:


Tiukemmat vaatimukset pysyvälle oleskeluluvalle

Budjettisopimuksessa lukee: "Tanska on oltava avoin vain niille, joilla on kykyä ja halua, mutta muilta suljetaan ovet"

Tämän lisäksi hallitus on päättänyt lisärajoituksista maahanmuuttajille, jotka haluavat saada pysyvän asuinpaikan.

Ulkomaalaiset voivat nyt hakea pysyvää asuinpaikkaa asuttuaan Tanskassa kahdeksan vuotta, kun aikaisemmin riitti kuusi vuotta, joka toteutettiin vuoden alussa osana laajaa maahanmuuttolainsäädäntöä.

Vielä tammikuussa ulkomaalaisten tarvitsi asua Tanskassa vain viisi vuotta ennen pysyvän asuinpaikan hakemista.

Budjettisopimuksessa ylistetään tällä "olevan kerrannaisvaikutuksia perheenyhdistämismahdollisuuteen". Uusien sääntöjen mukaan ulkomaalaisella on oltava pysyvä asuinpaikka kolme vuotta ennen kuin hän saa tuoda perheenjäseniään Tanskaan. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että juuri Tanskaan muuttanut ei nykysääntöjen mukaan voi tuoda 11 vuoteen perheenjäseniään Tanskaan.

Sen lisäksi, että kestää kauemmin edes saada oikeus hakea pysyvään asuinpaikkaa, niin myös vaatimukset sen saavuttamiseksi tiukentuivat. Nyt vaaditaan kokoaikatyö tai itsenäistä ammatinharjoittamista vähintään 3,5 vuotta viimeisen neljän vuoden aikana, kun aikaisemmin riitti 2,5 vuotta työllisyyttä viimeisten kolmen vuoden aikana.

Saavuttaakseen pysyvän oleskeluoikeuden ulkomaalaisten on myös pidättäydyttävä ottamasta vastaan julkisia tukia neljään vuoteen, kun aikaisemmin vaatimus oli vain kolme vuotta.

Uudet säännöt lisäävät myös seuraamuksia rikostuomiosta. Vähintään kuuden kuukauden tuomio vie mahdollisuuden pysyvään asuinpaikkaan.


Asylum "hätäjarru"

Lukuisia pysyvän oleskeluluvan hankkimisrajoituksia täydentää useita Tanskaan tulevien pakolaisten määrää vähentäviä aloitteita. Jo nyt maahanmuutto on alimmillaan viiteen vuoteen.

Vastaavaa on tehty myös Norjan lainsäädännössä. Tanskan hallitus on nyt sallinut niin sanotun hätäjarrun, jonka avulla viranomaiset voivat estää turvapaikanhakijoiden maahantulon rajoilla, "jos syntyy kriisitilanne".

Lisäksi sopimuksessa vaaditaan kielteisen päätöksen saaneiden turvapaikanhakijoiden karkottamisten "voimistamista" ja lisätään taloudellisia kannustimia edistämään maahanmuuttajien vapaaehtoista paluuta kotimaahansa.


"Rauha ja järjestys"

Sopimus sisältää myös pitkän luettelon aloitteita, joiden tarkoituksena on vakiinnuttaa "rauha ja järjestys" turvapaikanhakijoiden vastaanottokeskuksiin.
Näihin sisältyy pienten lasten vastaanottokeskusten perustaminen, "jotta ilman huoltajaa saapuneita alaikäisiä turvapaikanhakijoita kerääntyisi vähemmän samaan paikkaan". Alaikäistä turvapaikanhakijaa on mahdollisuus rangaista taloudellisesti "talon sääntöjen puutteellisesta noudattamisesta" ja vastaanottokeskuksia valvotaan valtakunnallisesti "tehostetulla" seurannalla.

Kenneth Kristensen Berth, an MP for the anti-immigration Danish People's Party, was in hot water on Thursday morning for comments he made at a debate in Copenhagen. Berth, who is his party's EU spokesman, squared off with the Danish European Movement chairwoman Stine Bosse in a debate on Europe's external borders for Europa Magasinet.

In one exchange, Berth said that migrants who try to reach Europe by boat should be shot. "The only way you can do it effectively is simply to turn the boats away and say 'You can't sail into this territorial border, if you do you will either be shot or you will be turned around and sailed back'," he said.

His debate opponent Bosse seemed to hardly be able to believe what she had just heard. "You cannot stand here and say that they be shot in the Mediterranean. I simply refuse to believe it," she said.

As the clip of his comments began to circulate, Berth took to Facebook in an attempt to "address a coming press storm".

"I of course don't mean that a ship under the command of Nato or Frontex should shoot at migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean. What I mean is that warning shots should be fired at a vessel that is crossing into European territorial waters!" he said.

Daily Expressista löytyi mielenkiintoinen juttu tanskalaisesta Nye Borgerlige (Wikipediassa englanniksi The New Civic Party) -puolueesta, jonka perustivat kaksi entistä konservatiivipuolueen poliitikkoa, Pernille Vermund ja Peter Seier Christensen, vuonna 2015. Heille tuli konservatiivipuolueen kanssa erimielisyyksiä mm. EU-linjasta ja heidän mielestään tällä hetkellä hallituksessa istuva puolue ei ole enää konservatiivinen.

Puolue haluaa tiukempaa maahanmuuttopolitiikkaa, eron EU:sta, vahvemmat suhteet mm. Iso-Britanniaan ja Norjaan, kiellon muslimihuiveille julkisissa instituutioissa (esim. kouluissa), kansalaisuuksien myöntämiseen rajoituksia ja turvapaikkojen antamista ainoastaan YK:n pakolaisohjelman kautta.

Puolue on selvästi haastamassa Tanskan kansanpuoluetta (DPP), joka on tähän asti ollut se maahanmuutto- ja EU-kriittinen vaihtoehto, mutta jutun mukaan on vesittänyt politiikkaansa myötäilemällä nykyistä hallitusta. Pernille Vermund sanoo, että yksikään tämän hetkisistä oikeistopuolueista ei ole EU-vastainen. Poliittisten kommentaattorien mukaan Nye Borgerligen olemassaolo saattaa pakottaa muita puolueita oikeistolaisempaan politiikkaan ja tiukempaan maahanmuuttolinjaan.

Nye Borgerlige on kerännyt riittävästi kannattajia ja pääsee osallistumaan vuoden 2019 parlamenttivaaleihin. Seuraavaksi puolue aikoo kuitenkin keskittyä marraskuussa järjestettäviin kuntavaaleihin. Wikipedia-artikkelin mukaan heillä on tälläkin hetkellä kunnanvaltuutettuja, sillä jotkut loikkasivat puolueeseen sen perustamisen jälkeen.

Meet Pernille Vermund, new Danish anti-migrant leader who wants OUT of EU & strong UK ties

DENMARK should ban headscarves in schools, have stricter controls on migrants and leave the European Union, according to the leader of the country's newest far-right party.

Pernille Vermund plans to overhaul Danish politics and provide a new challenge to the government in local elections later this year.

The 41-year-old leader of Nye Borgerlige or 'The New Right' has called for stricter controls on migrants and refugees and wants a ban on headscarves in schools and public institutions.

Ms Vermund wants to limit Danish citizenship to people who "contribute positively" to society and have a job and only give asylum to refugees from the UN's refugee agency's resettlement scheme.

She said: "Those who don't have the ability to provide for themselves, we have to ask them to find another place to stay."

The former member of the Conservative People's Party plans to challenge the anti-immigrant Danish People's Party (DPP) with her party's strict migrant stance.

Denmark started imposing the emergency border controls from September 2015 as more than one million migrants arrived in the EU.

EU envoys agreed last week to extend emergency border controls inside the Schengen zone for another three months to mid-May.

Nye Borgerlige was founded in 2015 by Ms Vermund and Peter Seier Christensen after the pair clashed with the Conservative's over EU membership, Europol and Ms Vermund's failed attempt to become an MP.

Ms Vermund, a divorced mother-of-three, is a trained architect from Snekkersten, a suburb north of Copenhagen.

She entered politics in 2009 when she was elected to the Helsingor City Council for the Consevrative People's Party.

But in 2011, Ms Vermund stopped back form the political stage to get "the family back on its feet" following her divorce.

She has three sons between the ages of six and twelve and admits she "can no longer be neutral and private" when out in public.

Reflecting on the strain of creating a political party, she said: "It costs a lot, on different levels, to start a party from scratch.

"So far, I haven't experienced threats or harassment."

Ms Vermund told Politico: "We are conservative, Peter and I. The true conservatives.

"We think that the party that currently sits in the Danish parliament is not truly conservative anymore.

"I was told that, if I wanted to continue, I had to either be quiet about my opinion — or change it.

"None of the existing right-wing parties in Denmark are against the EU. Some of them are critical, but none of them are critical enough to want to leave."

The party plans to take Denmark out of the EU and the UN Refugee Convention and "safeguard free trade" with Britain and Norway while "getting rid of the EU".

It comes as leading Brexiteer Daniel Hannan warned Britain could tempt EU members who are unhappy at the prospect of ever-closer union to form a friendly club with neighbours on the outside.

Mr Hannan said Eurosceptic countries like Poland and Denmark could be tempted away to join an "outer tier" with nearby countries like Morocco, Israel, Ukraine and Iceland.

The arm's-length association would be loosely linked to the EU on trade, defence and political co-operation, the Tory MEP for the south east of England proposed.

Ms Vermund also wants to "completely remove corporation tax".

In an attempt to build stronger ties with the UK, it is thought Ms Vermund contacted former Ukip leader Nigel Farage after the Brexit referendum.

The party, which has around 3,000 members, has achieved the required support to run for parliament in the next election in 2019.

Political commentators say the party could push Danish politics to the right and force more centrist parties to support anti-immigration policies.

The DPP is preparing to take on Nye Borgerlige and bolster its anti-immigrant rhetoric and Euroscepticism after watering down its criticism as it supported the Danish coalition government.

Thomas Larsen, a political commentator with the Berlingske newspaper, said: "I definitely think that DPP can feel, to a certain degree, pressure from Nye Borgerlige.

"The DPP is trying to send a message to both the government and the public that they want to strengthen their refugee policies, even more."

For now Ms Vermund's party is focusing on November's local elections and plans to take seats across the country "make sure that everybody in Denmark knows who we are and what we stand for".

She said: "We're definitely planning to have a candidate in all local councils."

Meet Denmark's new anti-Islam, anti-immigration, anti-tax party

For more than two decades, the Danish People's Party ran on an unapologetically anti-immigration, populist platform, pushing Danish politics to the right by rejecting multiculturalism and opposing the transfer of sovereignty to Brussels.

Today, the DPP faces its own challenge from the right.

Nye Borgerlige, or "The New Right," led by 41-year-old Pernille Vermund, pursues a libertarian economic agenda and wants even stricter controls on migrants in a country that already has some of the most stringent immigration laws in Western Europe.

Vermund, a trained architect, has called for a ban on headscarves in schools and public institutions. Her party wants asylum to be given only to refugees coming directly from the U.N. refugee agency's resettlement scheme and those with "a job in hand," and supports limiting Danish citizenship to people who "contribute positively" to society.

"Those who don't have the ability to provide for themselves, we have to ask them to find another place to stay," Vermund said.

Fawaz Taha Zatto, a teacher who came from the Syrian city of Ras al-Ayn two years ago, is "frustrated and disappointed" with Nye Borgerlige's anti-immigration rhetoric. "The positive contribution in a society depends on feeling welcomed by the community and the authorities," he said.

Vermund's party wants to withdraw not only from the European Union but also from the Refugee Convention and the U.N. convention on statelessness, and it wants to strengthen ties with countries such as Norway and the U.K. in order to "safeguard free trade" while "getting rid of the EU."

After the Brexit referendum, Vermund got in touch with then-UKIP leader Nigel Farage, but they "didn't continue the communication," she said.

In her office in the upscale Copenhagen neighborhood of Christianshavn, Vermund chose her words carefully. She didn't want to be misunderstood. "When you advance as powerfully as we do, there will always be people who are against you," she said, with a smile.

Northern conservative

Vermund, originally from Snekkersten, a southern suburb of Helsingør 45 kilometers north of Copenhagen, studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 2009, she was elected to the Helsingør City Council for the Conservative People's Party but withdrew from politics in 2011 in order to get "the family back on its feet" after a divorce. She has three sons between the ages of 6 and 12.

Running her own business, going through a divorce and working in politics put a strain on her personal finances: It's only been four months since Vermund took a last part-time job as a waitress, according to a recent report in Danish media.

"It costs a lot, on different levels, to start a party from scratch," she said. For better or worse, she added, she "can no longer be neutral and private" walking down the street.

"So far," she said, "I haven't experienced threats or harassment."

Vermund founded Nye Borgerlige in October 2015 with Peter Seier Christensen, a chemical engineer. The pair left the Conservative People's Party following Vermund's unsuccessful bid to become an MP in the general election in June that year.

"We are conservative, Peter and I. The true conservatives," Vermund said. "We think that the party that currently sits in the Danish parliament is not truly conservative anymore."

Mostly, the pair clashed with the party over Denmark's EU membership. Things came to a head when the party supported participation in Europe's police agency, Europol, which Vermund vehemently opposed.

"I was told that, if I wanted to continue, I had to either be quiet about my opinion — or change it," Vermund said. "None of the existing right-wing parties in Denmark are against the EU. Some of them are critical, but none of them are critical enough to want to leave."

A few months later, the Danes voted to leave Europol.

Overtaking the far right

Nye Borgerlige, which counts roughly 3,000 members, has gathered the required minimum of 20,109 signatures to run for parliament in the next election, scheduled for 2019. Polls put the party between 2.6 percent and 4.5 percent — above the 2 percent threshold required to enter the Danish parliament.

Despite its relatively modest support, Nye Borgerlige has the potential to significantly influence Danish politics, given the country's system of proportional representation, which means the support of smaller parties is often essential to the formation of coalition governments.

And it's not uncommon in Denmark's political scene for new parties to quickly gain traction. Liberal Alliance, a member of the current government, was founded in 2007.

According to a Gallup analysis conducted last November, Nye Borgerlige voters are former supporters of the Danish People's Party.

The DPP, which supports Lars Løkke Rasmussen's minority government, has watered down its criticism of the EU and compromised with the government on the refugee issue.

"I definitely think that DPP can feel, to a certain degree, pressure from Nye Borgerlige," said Thomas Larsen, a political commentator with the Berlingske newspaper.

If elections were held today, the DPP parliamentary group would be cut down from 37 to 24 members. A recent scandal over misuse of EU funds has been partially responsible for the decline, but a portion of the Danish electorate has turned to Nye Borgerlige to take a tougher stance on immigration. "They are extremely frustrated by the flow of refugees," said Larsen.

Nye Borgerlige, which has a more libertarian economic outlook than the DPP, is determined to fill the gap. Vermund said she wants "to completely remove corporation tax" — an unconventional position in a welfare state like Denmark.

The party's future also depends on the Social Democrats, the party with the most MPs in the Danish parliament and which has also taken a stricter stance on immigration. In August, the party suggested immigrants should be given 200,000 DKK (€26,900) to "go home."

Vermund's party could shift the political debate even further to the right and force more mainstream parties to support anti-immigration policies. According to Larsen, the DPP is already trying to toughen its anti-immigration rhetoric in anticipation. "They are trying to send a message to both the government and the public that they want to strengthen their refugee policies, even more," he said.

Meanwhile, Nye Borgerlige's positions on other issues are still a mystery. In an interview with Danish television in September, Vermund appeared unprepared for questions regarding pensions, public transport and health care.

"She's not a very experienced politician," said Larsen. "I don't think that Pernille Vermund has been able to set a new agenda."

Vermund is unconcerned by the criticism, pointing out that her party quickly gathered the 20,000 signatures it needed. "Much faster than any other political party has done before," she said.

Nye Borgerlige's first real test will be local elections in November. The party is already represented in nine city councils and one regional council and counts branches in 51 cities around the country, according to Vermund.

"We're definitely planning to have a candidate in all local councils," she says. The party's biggest challenges, she said, will be to "make sure that everybody in Denmark knows who we are and what we stand for."

MIGRANTS must celebrate Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter if they want to properly integrate, a Danish political party has demanded.

The anti-immigration Danish People's Party (DPP) also said going to church could put immigrants on the right track as they settle down in Denmark.

The DPP's demand comes after MPs earlier this month debated the question of what it means to be a Dane.

Martin Henriksen, the Eurosceptic party's immigration spokesman said celebrating Christian values could help new arrivals integrate and understand Danish culture.

He said: "To do that, you need to understand Christianity and its meaning for the Danish people.

"You have to participate in that part of our cultural package to experience the things that bind the majority of our population together through common rituals and traditions.

"One could imagine that you could pop into a church at Easter, if only just to see how it is done."

Despite the DPP arguing it would be good for migrants to observe Christian holidays in order to integrate, the Liberal Alliance's immigration spokesperson Laura Lindahl denounced it as "un-Danish" to link national identity to religion.

While the Social Democrats' immigration spokesman Dan Jørgensen added: "It is very dangerous to make Danishness a matter of religion.

Danes 'more generous than ever' to refugees

Danish people have become consistently mere generous over the last four year when it comes to donating money to refugees, a new survey shows.

Carried out by Voxmeter on behalf of the Danish Red Cross, the survey shows that 9.4 per cent of Danes state that they would give money to refugees today compared to 4.5 per cent in 2016 and 2.3 per cent in 2013.

The results reflect a significant change in the attitudes of Danes towards helping others, according to the secretary general of the Danish Red Cross (DRC).

Anders Ladekarl, DRC's general secretary, told news agency Ritzau that Danes have become better at talking about solutions to the refugee issue and the consequences of not helping refugees.

"There's been a significant change in people's attitudes towards helping people. It's related to an increased understanding of the fact that it's important to help refugees," Ladekarl told Ritzau.

"This also signals that even though many Danes are concerned that too many refugees are coming to Denmark, this does not necessarily mean they do not want to help," the NGO general secretary continued.

Ladekarl told Ritzau that more people now wished to support refugees than animal welfare, and that the conflict in Syria, now entering its seventh year, had been the main eye-opener for Danes on the need to help refugees.

"That brutal war has made its victims seem very close at hand for a lot of people," he said, adding that the massive focus on the issue by media and politicians had been a large factor in Danes' awareness of the seriousness of the issue.

The Danish arm of the Red Cross received 7.9 million kroner ($1.1 million) in donations to Syria in 2016 compared with 3.5 million ($0.5 million) kroner in 2013, reports Ritzau.

Ladekarl told the news agency that this increased income was proof that generous Danes were backing up their words with actions.

"It's not just something people are saying. We are also seeing the evidence through their donations," he said.

Civil war, treason, rape, persecution. Pernille Vermund, leader of the Danish far-right party "the New Conservatives", has no shortage of words to describe Denmark's dystopian future if immigrants have their way.

Referring to immigrants as lazy, disloyal, ungrateful and criminals, Vermund regularly lashes out at those who are sympathetic to immigrants because they "accept ... the subjugation of women, children, homosexuals and non-Muslims."

Her party polled at 4.8 percent in late February - impressive for one founded less than two years ago.

Appeals to individual freedoms, calls for Denmark to leave the EU and ultra-liberal economic policies draw in voters who traditionally would have avoided fringe groups such as Vermund's party. This helps to explain how seven out of 10 of her potential voters are not only male, white and middle-aged, but also reasonably wealthy and in possession of a university degree.

A regular participant in mainstream political TV talk shows, and with a column in one of the most widely read tabloid newspapers in Denmark, she is both well-known and a frequent object of derision from much of the liberal left and mainstream media.

Vermund and her party appear to be succeeding with their unusually harsh language, for example comparing the 1951 Refugee Convention to "Sharia law" because it - like sharia law, Vermund contends - is "out of touch with reality" and "a remnant of the past".

Danish integration minister Inger Støjberg baked up a storm on social media by posting a photo in which she posed with a cake to celebrate her 50th law change restricting immigration.

The minister posted a picture of herself holding a birthday cake on Facebook, writing that she had decided to mark her 50th immigration curb since taking over as Minister for Integration in 2015.

The 41-year-old leader of Nye Borgerlige or 'The New Right' party polled at 4.8 per cent in late February, an incredible feat as the party was only founded less than two years ago.

Her ideas are gaining so much popularity that it would be dangerous to ignore her, says Andreas Reventlow in an opinion piece for The EU Observer.

Mr Reventlow, a political commentator and an adviser at the Copenhagen based non-profit International Media Support, says the rise of the blonde politician comes amid the popularity of France's Marine Le Pen and the Netherlands' Geert Wilders.

Denmark Bending Down Under Burden of Immigrant Baby Boom

The recent years' refugee influx is beginning to show on European birth rates. In Denmark, the proportion of babies born to immigrant parents has increased significantly, which is fraught with far-reaching economic and cultural consequences.

Of the 61,614 children born in Denmark in 2016, more than one fifth was born to immigrant parents. So far, Danish women are still in the lead as regards births in Denmark, yet the percentage of Syrian and Turkish mothers was found to be rising during the past decade. In 2007, the share of children born to immigrant families was only 13.5.

The rising proportion of children born to women with foreign backgrounds did not surprise Hans Oluf Hansen, professor emeritus of demography at Copenhagen University. He pointed out that the majority of the Syrian refugees who came to Denmark in recent years are just in fertile age. Also, the newcomers tend to be much more prolific than ethnic Danes, whose fertility rate hovers at around 1.7 births per woman despite the government's perennial efforts.

According to Poul Christian Matthiessen, population researcher and professor emeritus of demography at Copenhagen University, such developments will shape the Danish society in years to come. Matthiessen expects immigration to Europe to continue, not least from asylum seekers looking for better living conditions. Matthiessen called immigration from non-Western countries a particular challenge for Danish society, both economically and culturally.

"The annual economic burden on society from non-Western immigrants and their descendants amounts to 15-20 billion DKK [$2.2 —2.9bln], which is equivalent to 1 percent of the GDP. There is a great difference between their contribution, and what they receive from society in the form of grants or teaching," Poul Christian Matthiessen told the Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad.

According to Matthiessen, the immigrants' rising birth rates also imply cultural challenges.

"The other problem is purely cultural, especially with part of the Muslim population who have a different view of relations between men and women, freedom of expression and how the society must be organized with the help from the Quran, whereas Denmark is a secular society, where parliament decides without referring to holy scriptures," Poul Christian Matthiessen said.

Historian and professor emeritus from Copenhagen University Henrik Jensen concurred about the challenges that immigration is posing.

"It puts a strain on integration efforts, if you want to maintain certain continuity in the country. One must strive to make it work for all groups in society, especially for those coming from outside, and emphasize that they integrate themselves, build a relationship with the country and the language, get education and work. If instead the tendency for parallel societies continues, it affects the cohesion in society," Henrik Jensen said.

In 1980, there were 50,000 non-Western immigrants and their descendants, which accounted for one percent of Denmark's population. Today, the number exceeds 450,000 and thus constitutes eight percent. According to the latest projections from Statistics Denmark, in 2060 there will be at least 900,000 non-Western immigrants, who will represent more than 13 percent of the Danish population.
