EU border force Frontex implicated in migrant abuse

New reports, disputed by Frontex, place the EU border agency at scenes of brutality against migrants. The border guards of Greece, Bulgaria and Hungary have been found to be especially brutal.

German and British media published reports on Monday that place the European Union border agency Frontex at the scene of illegal activities by national border guards that may have constituted human rights violations.

According to research by the Returns Network, not only have Frontex guards tolerated violence against displaced people by their national counterparts on the EU's external border, they have often treated refugees inhumanely themselves.

Citing Frontex documents, the Network reported that national guards used nightsticks and pepper spray to subdue displaced people, and dogs to chase them through forests. The border guards in Greece, Bulgaria and Hungary were especially brutal, the Network found. Rather than pulling its own agents from collaborations with national border forces, Frontex simply closed the cases.

Firm denial

Warsaw-based Frontex denied any wrongdoing pertaining to the alleged violations at the bloc's external borders and on deportation flights, the agency said in a statement to DW on Monday.

"Frontex categorically denies any involvement of its officers in violations of fundamental rights," the agency told DW.

The agency said it "condemns any form of inhumane treatment, unprocessed returns and any other form of violence which are illegal under the European Charter for Fundamental Rights.

"All officers deployed by Frontex are bound by the code of conduct which Frontex developed after consultation with a number of partners including its Consultative Forum on Fundamental Rights.

Frontex operates an internal complaints mechanism and told DW that it had received no complaints.

Bosnian Media Claim Croatian Police Beat up 18 Migrants, Forced Them Back

The group of migrants discovered by Bosnia and Herzegovina police in the area of the northwestern town of Velika Kladuša in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday are victims of brutality by the Croatian border police who caught them as they were trying to illegally cross the border into Croatia, beat them up and returned them forcibly to Bosnia and Herzegovina, local media reported on Wednesday without providing any evidence or official statements for their claims.

Quoting unnamed sources, the Klix web portal claims that the migrants were illegally transferred back to Bosnia and Herzegovina by members of Croatian border police forces, who left after being spotted by the Bosnian border police.

"This is the first concrete case that confirms allegations by Bosnia and Herzegovina officials about the neighbouring country violating Bosnia and Herzegovina's sovereignty with incursions of its police into the territory under Bosnia and Herzegovina's control," the portal reported.

The coordinator for assistance to migrants in Velika Kladuša, Jasmin Čehić, earlier told the Oslobodjenje daily that the migrants were given medical assistance in the local clinic where they had been brought by the border police.

A total of 18 migrants were admitted to the clinic and six of them had serious injuries, mostly bone fractures, while the others had light injuries.

"They said that they had already crossed over to Croatia at an unknown part of the border, when they were discovered by Croatian police who allegedly beat them up, took their money and mobile phones and then transferred them back to Bosnia and Herzegovina's territory," Čehić said.

Eighteen migrants hurt trying to cross Bosnia-Croatia border - officials

Eighteen migrants were injured while trying to illegally reach the European Union across Bosnia's border with Croatia, Bosnian officials said on Wednesday.

The migrants, all men from Pakistan and Iraq, were taken to a local hospital overnight by police, the officials said, declining to give further details. Doctors said six of them appeared to have serious injuries.

More than 40,000 migrants and refugees have entered Bosnia since last year in the hope of crossing from the northwestern towns of Bihac and Velika Kladusa into Croatia and thence western Europe.

Many have accused Croatian police of beating them before turning them back, allegations Croatian police have repeatedly denied.

The police were looking into Wednesday's incident, a spokesman in Zagreb said.

Bosnia To Start Tracking Migrant Injuries After Alleged Beatings By Croatian Police

Authorities in northwestern Bosnia-Herzegovina say they will start recording injuries sustained by migrants after 18 of them were allegedly beaten by Croatian police near the two countries' border.

Una Sana Canton's Health Minister Nermina Cemalovic made the announcement to RFE/RL on August 8, a day after 14 Pakistanis and four Iraqis were found with signs of physical trauma while trying to illegally cross the border into EU-member Croatia.

Bosnian media and a Croatian refugee assistance center said they were beaten by Croatian police, an allegation that Zagreb authorities deny.

All 18 migrants were subsequently taken to a local hospital where director Evresa Okanovic said they had injuries in the form of "swelling, hematoma, and bruises in the back, legs, arms, and shoulders."

None were diagnosed with head injuries, Okanovic said.

The incident follows allegations by Amnesty International and other human rights groups that Croatian security personnel have beaten, robbed, and violently forced migrants back into Bosnia after crossing the border in hopes of making their way into the European Union.

Bosnian officials have complained that armed Croatian police have illegally crossed the border into Bosnia while forcing the migrants back.

The Croatian police says that force is applied within the bounds of law and done humanely.

'Thousands Of Other Testimonies'

In a statement, Croatia's Interior Ministry admitted that Croatian police "deterred" 18 adult men from illegally crossing the border near Buhaca, close to the border.

However, it denied that they were treated with brutality or excessive force.

A Croatian government spokesman in Zagreb said the incident was being investigated.

Milena Zajovic of the Zagreb-based refugee assistance center Are You Syrious told RFE/RL that she "doubts" the Croatian version of events, saying it is isn't "consistent with the thousands of other testimonies that speak of violent and illegal expulsion" of migrants.

Bosnian Security Minister Accuses Croatian Police of Pushbacks of Migrants

Bosnia and Herzegovina's Security Minister Dragan Mektić has again accused Croatian police of forcibly returning illegal migrants to Bosnia and Herzegovina and violating the country's territorial integrity.

"We have the information to prove this, that they enter our territory armed, and footage showing what they do to migrants who cross into Croatia from Bosnia and Herzegovina, they beat them, take away their money and mobile phones, and return them to us," Mektić told the Bosnian Faktor news website on Thursday.

Mektić said that his ministry does not have the authority to respond because this is a foreign policy matter, adding that all information available has been referred to the country's presidency from which they expect a reaction.

"Something has to be done, there has to be a response. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also been notified that Croatian police enter Bosnia and Herzegovina armed, and they, too, must respond and protect the integrity and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina," Mektić said.

The Latest: Police in N. Macedonia detain 161 migrants

Police in North Macedonia say 161 migrants were stopped overnight trying to enter illegally from Greece.

In a statement, police said the migrants were discovered in the south of the country by local police and officers from other European countries who are helping patrol North Macedonia's borders.

They were said to be nationals of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Somalia and Eritrea and had been travelling in four groups.

The migrants were taken to a detention center in the southern town of Gevgelija pending deportation to Greece.

North Macedonia police find 22 migrants packed into SUV

Police in North Macedonia say border patrol officers found 22 migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh packed into an SUV and arrested the driver.

A media statement issued Sunday said the officers made the discovery on Saturday afternoon in southern North Macedonia, near the town of Demir Kapija.

Police allege the migrants entered the country illegally from Greece and say they will be deported back there. The statement says the passengers were taken to a shelter in the border town of Gevgelija.

Romania Arrests Iraqis Hidden In Truck Bound for Poland

Romanian border police on Friday arrested 10 Iraqi citizens who were trying to illegally cross the state border to reach Western Europe, authorities said on Friday.

The migrants, who were all asylum seekers in Romania, were hidden in a truck and have been charged with "illegally attempting to cross the border".

The driver, a Turkish national covering the route between Turkey and Poland, will also have to respond to charges of "trafficking migrants".

Police made the arrests early on Friday at the Nadlac II–Csanadpalota border between Romania and Hungary.

The group was made up of three men and three women aged 18 to 40 and four children two to nine. "They were trying to reach Western European states," the statement said.

On Wednesday at 2am, Romanian police caught 15 other Iraqis in western Romania, while "walking through the fields towards Hungarian territory". They were caught only 500 meters from the border.

The 15 were ten women, four men and one minor. They allegedly planned to cross into Hungary and continue their clandestine journey towards Western Europe. They are also accused of trying to cross the border illegally.

Bosnian Police Have Stopped 7,650 Illegal Migrants Heading to Croatia

Since the start of this year until mid-August, Bosnian police have prevented more than 7,000 illegal migrants from entering the country.

However, despite all their efforts a lot of migrants have managed to cross the border which is the result of the chronic shortage of police personnel to control the border, Bosnia and Herzegovina's border police chief Zoran Galić said on Monday as carried by the Banja Luka-based Nezavisne Novine daily.

Precise data indicates that by 12 August, 7,650 illegal migrants were prevented from entering the country however thousands have managed to do so.

"The majority of illegal migrants come from Pakistan, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan," Galić said. Continuous pressure exists from the direction of Serbia and Montenegro toward the eastern and northeastern sections of Bosnia and Herzegovina's border. At the same time the situation is quite complex on the border leading out of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly in the Krajina region, added Galić.

He assessed that a cooperation agreement between border police in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia was being implemented well. He also added that no incidents had been recorded on the border between the two countries when 18 injured migrants were recently discovered, who claimed that Croatian police had used force to push them back into Bosnia and Herzegovina.

EU boosts aid for Bosnia's migration influx

The European Union promised 10 million euros in aid to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The funds are earmarked to build new reception centers and support the more than 7,000 migrants currently based in the Balkan state.

The European Union promised 10 million euros of additional aid to support Bosnia and Herzegovina in managing the influx of migrants crossing its territory to reach Western Europe.

The new funding brings the total EU funding for migration in the country to 34 million euros since the beginning of 2018, according to an EU statement.

The funds will be used to build new reception centers and to bolster other services, including "food and accommodation, access to water sanitation and hygiene" to the roughly 7,400 migrants currently residing in the Balkan state, the EU delegation said in a statement.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the construction of new reception centers is a hot political issue as the rapid influx of migrants has created tensions with some local communities.

The biggest reception centers are located in the northwestern towns of Bihac and Velika Kladusa.

Slovenia erects more border fence to curb migrant inflow (22.8.2019)

Slovenia has begun work on an additional stretch of fence along its southern border with Croatia with which it aims to keep out a rising number of migrants entering the country illegally.

Slovenia's police registered 7,415 illegal migrants in the first seven months of this year, a jump of 56% compared to the same period of 2018 as more people are try to reach wealthy Western states via the Balkans.

Last month the government signed a contract with a Serbian firm Legi-SGS to put up 40 kilometers (25 miles) of fence on the border with Croatia. Once that section is completed, the total length of fence will be 219 kilometers and cover almost a third of the Slovenian border with Croatia. Slovenia's total land and sea border is 1,370 km long.

"The fence will be erected temporarily in the areas where it is necessary to prevent illegal crossings of the state border and ensure the safety of people and their property," said Irena Likar, a spokeswoman of the Interior Ministry.

Slovenia first began constructing a border fence during the refugee crisis of 2015 when in a period of six months about half a million illegal migrants passed through the country.

This new stretch of fence is around 2.5 meters high and is being erected on the banks of the river Kolpa which runs between Slovenia and Croatia.

The government's immigration policy has met with little opposition in Slovenia, although some civil society groups are against the wire fence.

Most illegal migrants come from Pakistan, Algeria, Afghanistan, Morocco and Bangladesh. Only a fraction seek asylum in Slovenia, with most continuing on to neighboring Italy and Austria.

Last month Italian and Slovenian police started joint border patrols in order to curb the flow of illegal migrants.

Migrant dies after van plunges into river in Croatia

A migrant died in Croatia after a van carrying 12 of them plunged into a river and police in North Macedonia discovered 30 migrants in an abandoned truck, developments that come as the Balkans refugee route that peaked a few years ago again sees an increased number of illegal border crossings.

The van crash happened near the Croatian border with Slovenia after the driver refused to stop at a checkpoint and was chased by a patrol. The driver, presumably a migrant smuggler, managed to get out of the sinking vehicle, fleeing into a nearby minefield. A search for him was ongoing, Croatian police said.

Police pulled the migrants from the sinking van in the Kupa River by breaking its windows, but a woman later died at a hospital. [...]

Police in North Macedonia said they spotted an abandoned truck Saturday afternoon near the town of Strumica, which borders with Greece, and discovered 30 migrants — 24 Pakistanis, three Iraqis, two Syrians and one Sudan national.

Reception centers full, problems to get supplies

Some 21,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in Bosnia-Herzegovina since the beginning of the year, resulting in logistical and social problems created by the growing flow into the country. ''In the first seven months of the year, the number of migrants who entered the country was more than that seen the entire year before,'' said Nermin Kljajic, interior minister of the Unsko-Sanski canton, the region in northwestern Bosnia-Herzegovina on the border with Croatia, where most of the migrants arrive. Local media quoted Kljajic as saying that most of the migrants are Afghans, Pakistanis or Moroccans aiming to continue towards western EU countries.

All reception centers are full and thousands of refugees are sleeping in makeshift lodgings or on the streets. Kljajic said that the situation is getting worse every day and that there are growing problems concerning food and medical supplies and that the local population is frequently staging protests after theft and crimes allegedly committed by migrants that do not find a spot in reception facilities.

BiH expects a new influx of migrants

According to the state Border Police, Bosnia and Herzegovina can expect a new influx of migrants, but this police agency suffers from a lack of officers to protect the eastern borders with Serbia, the direction where the migrants mostly come from.

If the problem with the insufficient number of the border police officers is not solved soon, the migration issue might escalate, warned the BiH Border Police.

"The available officers cannot sufficiently patrol the borders. That would mean one officer for 30 kilometres of the border and European standards say that one officer should supervise an area of one-kilometre", explained Sanela Dujković, the Spokesperson for BiH Border Police.

To fully cover the border with Serbia, the Border Police needs 1,000 officers.

According to the BiH Service for Foreigners' Affairs, 18,641 migrants were registered in the period January 1 – September 2, but this number changes on a daily basis. BiH Red Cross said they would provide additional resources to help to solve the crisis.

Sloveniaan saapui ennätysmäärä laittomia siirtolaisia heinäkuussa

Slovenian poliisi otti heinäkuussa kiinni 1740 laitonta siirtolaista, jotka yrittivät Sloveniaan ja Euroopan vapaan liikkuvuuden alueelle, Schengen-alueelle. Heinäkuu oli siirtolaisten saapumisen suhteen vilkkain kuukausi kahteen vuoteen.

Primorska24 kertoo Slovenian pääministeri Marjan Šarecin lähettäneen 35 sotilasta avuksi yli 600 kilometrin pituisen Kroatian vastaisen rajan vartioimiseen. Slovenian armeijalla ei kuitenkaan ole valtuuksia muuhun kuin tarkkailuun. Vain poliisivoimat voivat ottaa rajan yli tulevia laittomia siirtolaisia kiinni.

Slovenian ja Italian välinen raja pysyy auki. Italian sisäministeri Matteo Salvini on vaatinut rajan sulkemista aidalla, mutta Italiassa vallan saa kohta vasemmistolaishallitus, jonka maahanmuuttopolitiikka lähes varmasti ei tule olemaan niin realistinen kuin tiukkaa linjaa vetäneen Salvinin.

Croatia Won't Allow Illegal Migrations, Interior Minister Says

Interior Minister Davor Božinović said in a television interview on Sunday evening that the migrant wave was less intense than four years ago but that the number of illegal migrants had increased, adding that Croatia was following the rules and would not allow illegal migrations.

"The migrant wave has actually never stopped. It is much less intense than in 2015 and 2016. The main difference is that in 2015 migrants were invited to western Europe, while the situation today is completely different," Božinović told the HRT public television service.

He said that the EU today obviously did not want to take in illegal migrants anymore and that Croatia, given the fact that it has the longest external border of the European Union, was withstanding the pressure.

Božinović said that Croatia was aware of the complex situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina given its internal relations and division of powers, adding that the problem was not the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia but "the fact that, according to their own admissions, they are doing nothing on the eastern border of Bosnia and Herzegovina where migrants are entering the country."

The minister said that the number of illegal migrants had increased compared to last year. "Croatian police are abiding by the law and are not allowing illegal migrants into Croatia," he said.

Asked if Croatia had the resources to deal with the increased number of people smugglers, 589 of whom have been arrested so far this year compared to 600 in the whole of 2018, Božinović said that the police had the necessary resources and were much better organised in combating illegal migration.

Kroatian poliisi nappasi eilen pääkaupunki Zagrebin eteläpuolella Pokupskossa kiinni 28 laitonta pakistanilaista ja bangladeshilaista siirtolaista matkalla Kroatian läpi Sloveniaan. Joukko oli tullut Kroatiaan laittomasti Bosnian Velika Kladušasta, joka on laittomien siirtolaisten ryhmittymispaikka pohjoiseen suuntautuvaan invaasioryntäykseen.

Koska yksikään näistä laittomasti maahan tulleista ei halunnut hakea turvapaikkaa Kroatiasta, eikä tarvinnut sairaalahoitoa, määräsi poliisi nämä palaamaan takaisin Bosnia-Hertsegovinaan.

Eli pakistanilaisille ja itä-pakistanilaislle (bangladeshilaisille) muslimeille ei kaiken hädän ja vainon keskelläkään kelvannut sen enempää Bosnia-Hertsegovina kuin Kroatiakaan maaksi, josta hakea kansainvälistä suojelua, eivätkä varmasti olisi myöskään Sloveniaan jääneet sinne päästyään, vaan jatkaneet Saksaan tai vaikkapa Britanniaan. Tätä ennen turvallisia maita hakea turvapaikkaa olisivat olleet ainakin Turkki ja Kreikka, jos/kun ovat saapuneet "normaalia" reittiä.

Tällainen sosiaaliturvaperäinen siirtolaisuus eli elintasopakolaisuus leikkii Euroopan maiden turvapaikkajärjestelmällä, minkä ehtii. Huolestuttavaa on sekin, että tämä porukka palaa nyt vain yhden askeleen taaksepäin pelilaudalla ja yrittää seuraavalla heittovuorolla uudelleen edetä kohti Pohjois-Eurooppaa. Koko kopla täytyisi luonnollisesti palauttaa lähtöruutuunsa ja sitä ennen laittaa kulkemaan sen vankilan kautta, etteivät eksy uudelleen.

Croatian Police Present Migrants with Notices of Readmission to Bosnia (6.9.2019)

A group of about 20 Pakistani and Bangladeshi migrants were given notices of readmission to Bosnia and Herzegovina after it was established that they had entered Croatia illegally and after none of them applied for asylum or requested medical attention, the police told Hina on Thursday.

The migrants were found in Pokupsko, south of Zagreb, where they stopped on their way to Slovenia. They had walked along a road from Velika Gorica and sat outside a church in Pokupsko waiting for the police to pick them up, according to the police report.

The police found that they had illegally crossed the border from the Bosnian town of Velika Kladuša.

They were processed in accordance with the law on foreign nationals and were given notices of readmission after they expressed no wish to apply for international protection in Croatia.

Additional police and gendarmerie teams have been sent to the Bulgarian-Greek border following an increase in attempts by migrants to cross into the country illegally from Greece, Bulgarian Interior Minister Mladen Marinov said.

Marinov said that at the moment it would not be necessary to deploy the Bulgarian military to the Greek border.

According to the United Nations High Commission on Refugees, more than 8000 migrants arrived on Greece's Aegean islands in August, more than double the number in August 2018. Reports on September 10 said that more than 2000 had arrived on the islands from Turkey since September 1.

'We'll try again': EU-bound migrants reroute via Albanian hills

After slipping across the Greek border into the arid mountains of southeastern Albania in the dead of night, Hidaja Salah and his fellow travellers are blinded by the headlights of a police car.

The migrants were hoping to continue west towards the EU but their journey has been halted in this Balkan state -- for now.

"We will try again," Salah, a young and bespectacled man from Afghanistan in his 20s, tells AFP as the Albanian police vehicles pull up.

He and the others -- eight Egyptian men -- are part of a growing number of migrants travelling across a southern Balkan route from Greece into Albania and Montenegro in a bid to reach the European Union.

Since May their journeys have become more difficult, with the EU dispatching its border agency, Frontex, to Albania to help patrol its porous 350 kilometre (215 mile) border with Greece.

The poor and mountainous country has became a key transit stop for migrants ever since a northern route through the Balkans was shut down in early 2016.

Since then, "the trend is visibly upward," said Aida Hajnaj, the deputy director general of Albanian police.

"The Balkan routes are active again," she said.

The new path winds through Albania and Montenegro, and sometimes Bosnia, in a bid to reach the EU through Croatia.

In the past three months, 2,310 migrants were intercepted in Albania -- more than double the 882 migrants caught in all of last year, according to official data.

In 2017, the figure was 206.

Frontex's joint operation with Albania is the first ever outside EU territory.

"The terrain here is really difficult and you need a lot of resources" to cover it, said Dominik Matiske, a German Frontex officer helping with border patrols.

Interior Minister Davor Božinović has said that Croatia will not change its policy towards migrants, which has been recognised by the European Commission, underscoring that the country will continue reinforcing the protection of its borders against irregular crossings and, in parallel, enable the integration of migrants who want to stay in Croatia.

"We are ready to respond to any situation in the event of a stronger influx (of irregular migrants)," Božinović told reporters at an international conference on homeland security in Zagreb on Tuesday.

Addressing the conference, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović warned about possible recurrence of migrant crisis, and said that Croatia would respond to such developments in a responsible manner, protecting its borders.

In his comment on the president's speech, the minister told reporters that, being a sovereign state, Croatia protected its territory and had reinforced human and technical capacities to that end.

He noted that the developments in the Middle East and north Africa are being followed, as those areas are sources of a large number of migrants. "Currently, there is no direct threat," Božinović said, adding that Croatia had stepped up control of migrations.

He also underscored a rise in the number of arrests of migrants' smugglers as a result of both higher pressure from migratory routes and improved efficiency of law enforcement authorities.

North Macedonia police detain 81 migrants found in truck

Police in North Macedonia have reportedly detained 81 migrants found in a truck near the country's border with Serbia. The driver of the vehicle had apparently ignored a police warning to stop for a check. He later abandoned the vehicle.

Police told the Associated Press that the migrants found late Monday were from Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. They are believed to have entered North Macedonia illegally from Greece and are likely to be returned there for the time being.

The number of migrants intercepted while entering North Macedonia illegally has increased by 20% so far this year.

Bosnian police find 34 migrants in van near Serbia border

Police in Bosnia say officers found 34 migrants in a van near the country's border with Serbia.

A police statement issued Wednesday said a Bosnian citizen was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle the migrants in the area around the town of Bratunaca in eastern Bosnia.

The statement says the people in the van didn't have identification documents but stated they were Syrians and Palestinians. The group included minors.

Police in Sarajevo separately arrested a migrant from Algiers on suspicion of attacking personnel on patrol at the capital's railway station. Police said the man arrested Wednesday morning carried a knife.

Slovenian police have arrested four suspected people smugglers and found 57 migrants being illegally transported through the country.

Police in Novo Mesto said Thursday that the migrants were found at three different locations in southern Slovenia, near the border with Croatia.

They said 35 migrants were found Wednesday in the back of a truck with Italian plates traveling along a main highway near the border crossing with Croatia. Seven more were found further south along the border and 15 others near the town of Kocevje.

Migrants come to Slovenia from neighboring Croatia as they seek to move toward Western Europe. Thousands of other migrants remain stuck in other Balkan countries, like Serbia and Bosnia.

Authorities in Bosnia say a migrant was stabbed to death during a fight in a migrant camp. The alleged perpetrator, also a migrant, was wounded and being treated in hospital.

The local prosecutor's office said the two migrants fought in a tent early Thursday at a migrant camp near the town of Bihac, in northwestern Bosnia.

Hundreds of migrants are staying at the Vucjak camp near the border with European Union member Croatia. International aid groups have criticized the camp as an unfit location because of nearby minefields.

Frustration among the thousands of migrants stuck in Bosnia is immense as they wait for months to cross into Croatia and move on toward Western Europe. Croatian police often turned back migrants several times before they succeed.

IGPF: Ukrainian guides and Asian migrants detected at border with Hungary

The border policemen from Sighetu Marmatiei discovered sever foreign citizens, from Bangladesh, Vietnam and Sri Lanka, guided by four Ukrainians, who were planning to illegally cross the border to Hungary. The Ukrainian guides are being held into custody for migrant smuggling, according to a press release sent on Saturday by the General Inspectorate of Border Police (IGPF).

On Thursday night, the border policemen discovered two vehicles in the area of the Paulian rural town who were heading towards the Hungarian border. At some point, one of the vehicles left the national road, heading towards the Dacia locality, located near the state border.

The drivers of the two cars were Ukrainian citizens, 30 years old and 26 years old respectively. Other two Ukrainian citizens plus seven men of different nationalities with no identity papers on them were also discovered in the car.

They were all taken to the Border Police headquarters for further investigations, as they couldn't justify their presence in the respective area.

Croatian Police Dismiss News Report About Migrant Abuse

The Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday denied an article by the H-Alter news website saying that Croatian police were "punishing migrants" by burning their feet with a hot iron rod.

"In order for an allegation to be officially verifiable at least some evidence should be made available, but none is presented in the article," the ministry said in a statement.

It said that the person who spoke with the author of the article did not know which police station he was taken to, could not remember details of the appearance of the police station, and the article did not specify the time when the incident allegedly happened.

"This kind of reporting can only be tendentious and that's why we resolutely dismiss the allegations from the article, which provides no evidence to support the claims made in it," the statement said, adding that the primary task of Croatian police is to guard the country's borders and protect its citizens and their property.

Slovenia: Citizen Patrols Aid Border Guards in Melania's Home Country

A citizen-led group has taken to the Slovenian-Croatian border in an effort to help bolster the presence of law enforcement agents preventing illegal mass migration.

Described as "vigilantes" by some media outlets, the group and its leader Andrei Sisko are patrolling the border for illegal migrants, saying they are there to support existing law enforcement officers, Euronews reports.

"I think the only solution here is to send the army to the border, the situation is similar now as if you were opening the gates of a prison and saying we're releasing all the prisoners, who would stay in there?" Blaz Zidar, a member of the group, said.

Earlier this week, Zidar and his "village guard" not only discovered over 30 illegal aliens attempting to cross the border, they also discovered a Pakistani migrant who had been stabbed and robbed by his compatriots.

According to Zidar, the Pakistani man had been stabbed six times, twice in the shoulder and four times in his legs. The so-called vigilantes were able to get the Pakistani migrant medical treatment, likely saving his life, according to Slovenian magazine Demokracija.

"The goal is to train people and volunteers to defend their land as needed and to help the military and police to control public order in times of massive migrations from African and Asian countries, especially Muslim, to protect our borders, because a state that is unable to protect its border is really not a sovereign state," the group's leader Andrei Sisko said.

11,813 Migrants Enter Croatia in First Eight Months of 2019

In the first eight months of 2019, Croatian border police arrested and processed 11,813 migrants who attempted to illegally enter the country, which is 3,609 more persons than in 2018 and as many as 8,019 more persons than in the same period of 2018, the Jutarnji List daily of Thursday reports.

The daily quotes official figures from the Ministry of the Interior which show that police stopped 49 people on a daily basis while they were trying to illegally cross the border into the country.

However, the total number of illegal migrants processed by Croatian police in the first eight months is far higher because in the same period, Slovenian police returned to Croatia 6,447 illegal migrants.

Those people managed to cross Croatian territory into Slovenia, where they were arrested and returned to Croatia in line with international regulations. Based on these figures, it can be concluded that 18,260 illegal migrants entered Croatia in the period from 1 January to 31 August.

The daily wonders where those 18,260 people are and concludes that they have been sent back to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia without having been offered protection.

Border police in Bosnia have turned back 50 Iraqi citizens who arrived at Sarajevo International Airport on a regular flight from Turkey and tried to enter the country with tourist visas.

Authorities said border police asked the passengers for details about their visits to Bosnia and officers decided based on the stated reasons that the Iraqis planned to pass through Bosnia while trying to get to a country in western Europe.

Border police said in a statement Thursday that the group would be flown back from Sarajevo to Istanbul, where their flight originated.

In a separate incident early Thursday, authorities say eight migrants were injured during a police chase in eastern Bosnia when their car overturned.

Police say the driver of the car fled and the injured migrants have been taken to a hospital.

10 People Detained for Migrant Smuggling to Serbia and Western Europe

The Special Prosecutor's Office has charged ten persons with participating in an organised crime group involved in smuggling individuals and groups of migrants across the country, said the Appellate Special Prosecutor's Office.

The accused were detained on 25 September 2019 in Sofia and Kostinbrod in a joint operation of the Special Prosecutor's Office and the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime. The law enforcers conducted a total of 28 searches of homes, automobiles, as well as personal searches, and seized tablets, telephones and radios used in the criminal activity.

The evidence collected indicates that the group has been operating since October 2018.
The group recruited migrants settled in Sofia and the region, who wanted to be illegally transferred to Serbia and Western Europe. They also took over migrants who were smuggled from Turkey by other traffickers. The group arranged for them to be transported to the border and smuggled to Serbia by car or through a "green border", where they were taken over by local people.

There has been a slight increase in the migrant flow from the Greek border with an average of one hundred people a day, Deputy Minister of Interior Stefan Balabanov told reporters at the National Assembly, Focus News Agency reports.

"In general, a few days ago, our minister held a conference call with the Greek minister of the interior to clarify some parameters for common actions. In our country everything is calm. In Greece there are problems on the island of Lesbos. I hope, with the additional forces that we have engaged, we will be able to cope," Balabanov said.

Asked what the numbers show, he said no one has been crossing the border so far, which was a result of the cooperation with the Turkish and Greek border police officers. He said Bulgarian police locates illegal migrants with thermal cameras miles away from the border, on the territory of Turkey and Greece, and they take them back.

Smolyan border police detain three smugglers and nine illegal immigrants

Border police officers from the Regional Police Directorate - Smolyan have detained three smugglers and nine illegal immigrants, said the press office of the Border Police.

Yesterday, the Ivaylovgrad border police station received information about a group of persons near the Bulgarian-Greek border. A border police patrol pulled over a Peugeot driven by a 20-year-old man from Haskovo. The driver, who had no driving licence, said he was hired by two men to transport foreigners inland. He was arrested, and a little later the other two men involved in the case were detained. The suspects, 32 and 24 years old, also from Haskovo, were identified by officers of the Krumovgrad border police station.

Shortly thereafter, the officers discovered the illegal immigrants – nine men without identity documents. Six said they were from Iraq and three said they were from Iran.

North Macedonia police discover van with 43 young migrants

Police in North Macedonia say they have found 43 migrants in an abandoned van shortly after the driver tried to evade a police block.

Police said in a statement Saturday that a patrol stopped a van near the central town of Shtip on Thursday.

Police found 43 migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, aged 16 to 25, in the van. They are believed to have entered North Macedonia from Greece on their way to Serbia.

Siirtolainen sai viime lauantaina surmansa Bilećassa Bosnia-Hertsegovinan itäosassa tultuaan ammutuksi.

Srđana Vukanovića syyttäjänvirastosta kertoo Kamenjarin mukaan, että 49-vuotias Todorićiman kylässä asuva mies soitti lauantaina 5. lokakuuta Bilećan poliisiasemalle ilmoittaakseen ampumistapauksesta. Mies selitti tappaneensa siirtolaisen kiväärillä.

49-vuotias oli havainnut, että asuntoon oli murtauduttu hänen ollessaan paimentamassa karjaa. Mies oli mennyt sisään kiväärin kanssa ja löytänyt talostaan kymmenen siirtolaista. Yksi siirtolaisista oli yrittänyt siepata aseen, ja seuranneessa yhteenotossa siirtolainen kuoli luotiin.

North Macedonia police find 45 migrants packed in van

Police in North Macedonia say a patrol has found 45 migrants on a main highway near the central town of Veles and arrested a van driver.

The 45 Pakistani migrants were discovered packed in the van early Sunday. Police say the 28-year-old driver, a Macedonian national, was arrested.

The migrants are believed to have entered North Macedonia illegally from Greece and are expected to be deported back.
